Short-term walking physical training and changes in body hydration status, B-type natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein levels in compensated co…

2008

BACKGROUND: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is associated with decreased exercise tolerance, alterations in body fluid balance and activation of neurohumoral and inflammatory pathways. Physical training, despite the contraindications of the past, is recommended for its beneficial effects on exercise capacity and quality of life. We investigate the effects of a short-term (ten weeks) walking physical training program (PT) on body hydration state (HS), B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. METHODS AND RESULTS: 22 patients with CHF (mean age 62.7+/-4.8 years, 15 men, mean ejection fraction 38.9+/-3.6%, NYHA class II-III), were enrolled. Eleven patients were rando…

The initial training of physical education teachers—In search of the lost meaning of professionalism

2006

This article re-examines the initial training of physical education teachers with the purpose of pinning down its professional significance. The author maintains that we have lost, in part, its meaning, and, in an attempt to recover it, offers two initial strategies: to revisit two basic concepts—education in general and physical education in particular—and to reformulate four key questions: Question 1. What being a physically educated person means… Professionals are urged to establish the objectives of physical education based on the deficiencies, necessities and interests of the children and young people, which are rooted in the nature of the developed societies in which they live (e.g. t…

Delving Into the Body Fears’. Teacher Training in Art Education Attending to the Work of Women Artists

2018

Development engineers’ work and learning as shared practice

2008

The field of workplace learning lacks empirical studies that view workplace practices as places for learning and see these practices in a critical light. Accordingly, the aim of this study is, first, to describe examples of everyday shared practice and consider what kinds of various conflicting aims and demands exist in it. Second, the purpose is to explore what and how it is possible to learn through these shared practices in the area of design and development work. The empirical material consists of ethnographic observations made in two organizations in Finland. Three thematic lines were extracted from field notes and transcribed work talk on the basis of ethnographic and adapted membersh…

The effect of simulation exercises on the control of aggressive behaviour in children

1974

.— The subjects consisted of two. matched, extremely aggressive (experimental = ExG and control = CoG) groups of twelve 8–year-old boys. and of one criterion group (CrG) of extrovert, well-controlled boys. Video-tape recording of behaviour was used both in pretest (T1) and post-test (T2). Between T1 and T2 the ExG was submitted to simulation exercises of 8 lessons given in a period of four weeks. The exercises consisted in social problem solutions on the purely cognitive (imaginary and symbolic) level and in role-playing (behavioral level). The hypothesis was that the combination of cognitive training and observational learning with the aim of making children realise alternatives to aggress…

Physical activity and health: Musculoskeletal issues

2007

Sarcopenia and osteoporosis, the complications of the age-related deterioration of the musculoskeletal system, result in increased risk of fracture, disability and death in old age. Consequently, the structure and function of skeletal muscle and bone and their adaptability are essential aspects of overall health, functional capacity and mobility during the whole lifespan. There is convincing clinical evidence that progressive resistance exercise training improves the properties of skeletal muscle in men and women across the age spectrum, thus providing a high reserve capacity for coping with the functional demands of physical tasks. Regarding bones, exercise is most effective during growth,…

Low dose CT of the heart: a quantum leap into a new era of cardiovascular imaging.

2010

In 10 years, computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) has shifted from an investigational tool to clinical reality. Even though CT technologies are very advanced and widely available, a large body of evidence supporting the clinical role of CTCA is missing. The reason is that the speed of technological development has outpaced the ability of the scientific community to demonstrate the clinical utility of the technique. In addition, with each new CT generation, there is a further broadening of actual and potential applications. In this review we examine the state of the art on CTCA. In particular, we focus on issues concerning technological development, radiation dose, implementation,…

Physical Activity Levels and Related Energy Expenditure during COVID-19 Quarantine among the Sicilian Active Population: A Cross-Sectional Online Sur…

2020

Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Italian government has adopted containment measures to control the virus’s spread, including limitations to the practice of physical activity (PA). The aim of this study was to estimate the levels of PA, expressed as energy expenditure (MET–minute/week), among the physically active Sicilian population before and during the last seven days of the COVID-19 quarantine. Furthermore, the relation between this parameter and specific demographic and anthropometric variables was analyzed. Methods: 802 Sicilian physically active participants (mean age: 32.27 ± 12.81 years; BMI: 23.44 ± 3.33 kg/m2) were included in the study and…

E-learning in corporate training using interactive courses

2017

Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2017 Health, safety, and environment (HSE) is an important term in industrial- and corporate context. A company focusing on their employees sharing the same values and attitudes regarding HSE can experience a working environment where employees feels safe, and perform their work without unnecessary risk-taking. There are often seen examples where HSE training relies on traditional classroom teaching, and keeps the focus on “do’s and “don’ts”, but the key to get employees to share a common goal on HSE, is to provide a deeper meaning for each employee on what this term actually mean. The purpose of this research…
