The authors investigated the association between vision impairment and physical activity among older adults from low- and middle-income countries. Visual acuity was measured using the tumbling ElogMAR chart, and vision impairment was defined as visual acuity worse than 6/18 (0.48 logMAR) in the better seeing eye. Physical activity was assessed by the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression and meta-analysis were conducted to assess associations. Retinal nerve fibre layer and brain grey substance as early prognostic factors for disability in multiple sclerosis.

We read with interest the article by Bock et al ,1 in which the association between retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and total macular volume (TMV) was analysed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and contrast sensitivity was measured by functional acuity contrast testing in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The authors found that the functional contrast vision in MS is influenced by morphological changes in the anterior visual pathway. This work emphasised that contrast sensitivity is reduced in MS, and that RNFL and TMV, as morphological measures of retinal axon loss, are predictors of contrast sensitivity. Biased postural vertical in humans with hemispheric cerebral lesions.

International audience; This study was aimed at demonstrating the existence of a biased postural vertical in humans with a recent cerebral lesion. The postural vertical of patients and controls was analysed comparatively using a self-regulated balancing task, performed in sitting posture. Patients displayed a quite constant (19/22) contralesional tilt of the postural vertical (mean -2.6 degrees), varying with the severity of their spatial neglect and hemianaethesia. Detection performance of normal cats and those lacking areas 17 and 18: a behavioral approach to analyse pattern recognition deficits.

The ability of cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed Gaussian visual noise was tested before and after bilateral removal of cortical area 17 and parts of area 18. The detection probability PD was measured as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio for the parameters: noise bandwidth, spatial frequency content and rate of movement of patterns. In both normal and lesioned cats a broadband noise was found to be most effective in masking the large patterns while two other types of noise, a medium frequency noise and a high frequency noise had little or no masking effect.
