Aesthetic perception of single implants placed in the anterior zone. A cross-sectional study
2016
Background: Several aesthetic indexes have been described to assess implant aesthetics. The aim of this study was to compare the aesthetic assessment made by dental professionals and students of single-tooth implants placed in the upper incisors. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey study using a subjective questionnaire to assess the aesthetics in 3 implant supported single-tooth cases in the anterior maxilla was performed. The interviewed subjects were divided into 4 groups: dentists with experience in implant treatment, dentists without experience in implants and 3rd and 5th year dental students. The questionnaire consisted of 2 visual analogue scales (VAS) to evaluate aestheti…

The potential of serum neurofilament as biomarker for multiple sclerosis
2021
Abstract Multiple sclerosis is a highly heterogeneous disease, and the detection of neuroaxonal damage as well as its quantification is a critical step for patients. Blood-based serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is currently under close investigation as an easily accessible biomarker of prognosis and treatment response in patients with multiple sclerosis. There is abundant evidence that sNfL levels reflect ongoing inflammatory-driven neuroaxonal damage (e.g. relapses or MRI disease activity) and that sNfL levels predict disease activity over the next few years. In contrast, the association of sNfL with long-term clinical outcomes or its ability to reflect slow, diffuse neurodegenerativ…
Technical memorandum: Mode classification in cylindrical surface waveguides
1987
A new method to analyse the TM-TE field structure of hybrid modes in cylindrical surface waveguides is proposed. This method, as well as others previously suggested, is applied to a dielectric-coated wire with an intervening airgap. Our results reveal that they cannot be classified into quasi-TM and quasi-TE modes. However, a scheme of mode designation is proposed, based more on mathematical properties than on the field structure.
Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay controls the changes in yeast ribosomal protein pre-mRNAs levels upon osmotic stress.
2013
The expression of ribosomal protein (RP) genes requires a substantial part of cellular transcription, processing and translation resources. Thus, the RP expression must be tightly regulated in response to conditions that compromise cell survival. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, regulation of the RP gene expression at the transcriptional, mature mRNA stability and translational levels during the response to osmotic stress has been reported. Reprogramming global protein synthesis upon osmotic shock includes the movement of ribosomes from RP transcripts to stress-induced mRNAs. Using tiling arrays, we show that osmotic stress yields a drop in the levels of RP pre-mRNAs in S. cerevisiae cell…
Los desafíos éticos del Transhumanismo
2022
Precise determination of the branching ratio of the neutral-pion Dalitz decay
2019
We provide a new value for the ratio $R={\Gamma(\pi^0\to e^+e^-\gamma(\gamma))}/{\Gamma(\pi^0\to\gamma\gamma)}=11.978(6)\times10^{-3}$, which is by two orders of magnitude more precise than the current Particle Data Group average. It is obtained using the complete set of the next-to-leading-order radiative corrections in the QED sector, and incorporates up-to-date values of the $\pi^0$-transition-form-factor slope. The ratio $R$ translates into the branching ratios of the two main $\pi^0$ decay modes: $\mathcal{B}(\pi^0\to\gamma\gamma)=98.8131(6)\,\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(\pi^0\to e^+e^-\gamma(\gamma))=1.1836(6)\,\%$.
Overview: On the transport and transformation of pollutants in the outflow of major population centres - Observational data from the EMeRGe European …
2022
Megacities and other major population centres (MPCs) worldwide are major sources of air pollution, both locally as well as downwind. The overall assessment and prediction of the impact of MPC pollution on tropospheric chemistry are challenging. The present work provides an overview of the highlights of a major new contribution to the understanding of this issue based on the data and analysis of the EMeRGe (Effect of Megacities on the transport and transformation of pollutants on the Regional to Global scales) international project. EMeRGe focuses on atmospheric chemistry, dynamics, and transport of local and regional pollution originating in MPCs. Airborne measurements, taking advantage of …
Study of the correlation between columnar aerosol burden, suspended matter at ground and chemical components in a background European environment
2012
Although routinely monitored by ground based air quality networks, the particulate matter distribution could be eventually better described with remote sensing techniques. However, valid relationships between ground level and columnar ground based quantities should be known beforehand. In this study we have performed a comparison between particulate matter measurements at ground level at different cut sizes (10, 2.5 and 1.0 mm), and the aerosol optical depth obtained by means of a ground based sunphotometer during a multiinstrumental field campaign held in El Arenosillo (Huelva, Spain) from 28 June to 4 July 2006. All the PM fractions were very well correlated with AOD with correlation coef…
Bioinspired catechol-terminated self-assembled monolayers with enhanced adhesion properties
2013
The role of the catechol moiety in the adhesive properties of mussel proteins and related synthetic materials has been extensively studied in the last years but still remains elusive. Here, a simplified model approach is presented based on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of upward-facing catechols thiol-bound to epitaxial gold substrates. The orientation of the catechol moieties is confirmed by spectroscopy, which also showed lack of significant amounts of interfering o-quinones. Local force-distance curves on the SAM measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows an average adhesion force of 45 nN, stronger than that of a reference polydopamine coating, along with higher reproducibility …
