Optical sectioning with a Wiener-like filter in Fourier integral imaging microscopy
2018
Non-scanning, single-shot, 3D integral microscopy with optical sectioning is presented. The method is based on the combination of Fourier-mode integral microscopy with a 3D deconvolution technique. Specifically, the refocused volume provided by a regular back-projection algorithm is 3D deconvolved with a synthetic 3D impulse response function that takes into account the number and positions of the elemental images. The use of this hybrid technique provides a stack of true-color depth-refocused images with significant gain of optical sectioning. The stack can be used, among other applications, to inspect inside the thick microscope specimen, to calculate collections of perspective views wit…
Continuous Broadband MWP True-Time Delay with PbS-PMMA and -SU8 waveguides
2016
[EN] A new microwave true-time delay (TTD) photonic unit based on the dispersion of PbS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) in a Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and the SU8 photoresist is presented. With this aim, the PbS-PMMA and PbS-SU8 nanocomposites are integrated on a silicon platform in the form of a planar and ridge waveguides, respectively. When PbS QDs on those structures are pumped below their band-gap, a phase shift and a temporal delay in an optically conveyed (at 1550 nm) microwave signal is performed. The results of these devices show potential benefits over current TTD technologies, since the proposed photonic waveguide structures allows real-time adjustment of the temporal delay by …
Temperature independence of birefringence and group velocity dispersion in photonic crystal fibres
2004
Experimental results are presented for the dependence of the dispersion and the birefringence of a highly birefringent photonic crystal fibre with temperature. It is shown that, unlike conventional optical fibres, where temperature induces stress regions between the different materials present in their structure, photonic crystal fibres exhibit no dependence with temperature of these optical properties owing to the single material nature of their structures.
High accuracy measurement of Poisson's ratio of optical fibers and its temperature dependence using forward-stimulated Brillouin scattering
2022
Transverse acoustic mode resonances enable a high accuracy determination of Poisson’s ratio and elastic properties of optical fibers. An all-optical pump and probe technique is used for efficient excitation and accurate characterization of both, radial and torsional-radial acoustic resonances of optical fibers. Simple and precise algebraic expressions for the frequencies of high order acoustic resonances are derived, enabling a rigorous analysis of the experimental data using standard least squares fitting. Following this approach, the determination of Poisson’s ratio does not require the measurement of any physical length, but only frequency measurements are required. An accuracy better th…
Designing a photonic crystal fibre with flattened chromatic dispersion
1999
Using a full-vector modal method, the authors have identified a region of nearly zero flattened chromatic dispersion in a specially designed photonic crystal fibre. The approach permits an accurate control of the dispersion features of these fibres in terms of their structural parameters.
Strong optical nonlinearities in gallium and indium selenides related to inter-valence-band transitions induced by light pulses
1997
A nonlinear optical effect is shown to occur in gallium and indium selenides at photon energies of the order of 1.5 eV. It corresponds to transitions from a lower-energy valence band to the uppermost one when a nonequilibrium degenerate hole gas is created in the latter by a laser pulse. This inter-valence-band transition is allowed by crystal symmetry. Its oscillator strength is estimated through the $f$-sum rule and turns out to be about two orders of magnitude higher than that of the fundamental transition. The intensity of this effect is stronger when the pump pulse photon energy is close to that of the inter-valence-band transition; a condition that can be fulfilled only in indium sele…
Optical activation of a silicon vibrating sensor
1986
The operation of a micromachined silicon vibrating sensor with both optical excitation and optical interrogation is reported. The proper locations at which the optical excitation should be applied for optimum excitation of different modes of resonance are described.
Ultralow chirp photonic crystal fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer
2018
A photonic crystal fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer design was optimized to obtain high performance and ultralow chirp. Two long-period gratings were used to excite the cladding modes, and the rich structure of the cladding was tailored to obtain a slightly chirped free spectral range, as required by the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) Norm G.694.1. Finally, a fabrication tolerance analysis was performed. The advantages of the proposed device are an ultralow chirp, high bandwidth, and fabrication robustness tolerance.
Chirped fibre Bragg gratings for phased-array antennas
1997
A variable delay line for phased-array antennas based on a chirped fibre Bragg grating is demonstrated. The time delay of a microwave modulating signal is modified by scanning in wavelength a chirped grating. In this initial experiment, time delay variations up to 556 ps have been achieved using a grating of 0.4 nm bandwidth and 6 cm length and modulating in the frequency range 390 MHz-5.20 GHz.
Wideband tuning of four-wave mixing in solid-core liquid-filled photonic crystal fibers
2016
We present an experimental study of parametric four-wave mixing generation in photonic crystal fibers that have been infiltrated with ethanol. A silica photonic crystal fiber was designed to have the proper dispersion properties after ethanol infiltration for the generation of widely spaced four-wave mixing (FWM) bands under 1064 nm pumping. We demonstrate that the FWM bands can be tuned in a wide wavelength range through the thermo-optic effect. Band shifts of 175 and over 500 nm for the signal and idler bands, respectively, are reported. The reported results can be of interest in many applications, such as CARS microscopy.
