Robust control in uncertain multi-inventory systems and consensus problems
2008
Abstract We consider a continuous time linear multi–inventory system with unknown demands bounded within ellipsoids and controls bounded within polytopes. We address the problem of ∈-stabilizing the inventory since this implies some reduction of the inventory costs. The main results are certain conditions under which ∈-stabilizability is possible through a saturated linear state feedback control. The idea of this approach is similar to the consensus problem solution for a network of continuous time dynamic agents, where each agent evolves according to a first order dynamics has bounded control and it is subject to unknown but bounded disturbances. In this context, we derive conditions under…
Incorporation of the bacterial reaction centre into dendrimersomes
2012
For the first time the ability of the first generation dendrimer belonging to the family of polyester-benzylether, (3,5)12G1-PE-BMPA-(OH)4, to form dendrimersomes is presented together with their capability to reconstitute the integral membrane protein complex called Reaction Centre (RC) purified from the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Size, polydispersity and time stability of the empty and protein containing dendrimersomes are presented together with the photochemical activity of the guest protein. The RC presence appears to strongly enhance the self-assembly properties of the Janus dendrimer, leading to the formation of proteo-dendrimersomes showing a photochemical act…
Identity Formation in Adulthood: A Longitudinal Study from Age 27 to 50.
2016
Longitudinal patterns of identity formation were analyzed in a representative cohort group of Finnish men and women born in 1959 across ages 27, 36, 42, and 50. The data were drawn from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality. Identity status (diffused, moratorium, foreclosed, achieved) from all four ages was available for 172 participants (54% females). Marcia’s Identity Status Interview used in this research included five domains: religious beliefs, political identity, occupational career, intimate relationships, and lifestyle. The findings indicated great variability in identity status across domains at each age level, and the identity trajectories fluctuated from age 27 to 50. T…
Brain-predicted age difference score is related to specific cognitive functions: A multi-site replication analysis
2021
Abstract Brain-predicted age difference scores are calculated by subtracting chronological age from ‘brain’ age. Positive scores reflect accelerated ageing and are associated with increased mortality risk and poorer physical function. To date, however, the relationship between brain-predicted age difference scores and specific cognitive functions has not been systematically examined. First, applying machine learning to 1,359 T1-weighted MRI scans, we predicted the relationship between chronological age and voxel-wise grey matter data. This model was then applied to MRI data from three independent datasets, significantly predicting chronological age: Dokuz Eylul University (n=175), the Cogni…
The human near-term myometrial beta 3-adrenoceptor but not the beta 2-adrenoceptor is resistant to desensitisation after sustained agonist stimulatio…
2004
International audience; 1. In order to compare the beta(2)- and beta(3)-adrenoceptor (beta-AR) desensitisation process in human near-term myometrium, we examined the influence of a pretreatment of myometrial strips with either a beta(2)- or a beta(3)-AR agonist (salbutamol or SR 59119A, respectively, both at 10 microm, for 5 and 15 h) on the relaxation and the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production induced by these agonists. 2. To assess some of the mechanisms potentially implicated in the beta-AR desensitisation process, we studied the influence of such treatment on the number of beta(2)- and beta(3)-AR binding sites, the beta(2)- and beta(3)-AR transcripts expression and the pho…

Associations of overweight and metabolic health with successful aging: 32-year follow-up of the Helsinki Businessmen Study
2020
Background & aims: Prognostic significance of metabolically healthy overweight and obesity (MHO) is under debate. However the relationship between MHO and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is less studied. We compared successful aging (longevity plus HRQoL) in men with MHO, metabolically healthy normal weight (MHN) and metabolically unhealthy overweight and obesity (MUO). Methods: In the Helsinki Businessmen Study longitudinal cohort, consisting of men born 1919 to 1934. In 1985/86, overweight (BMI >= 25 kg/m(2)) and metabolic health were determined in 1309 men (median age 60 years). HRQoL was assessed using RAND-36/SF-36 in 2000 and 2007, and all-cause mortality retrieved from registe…
Hormonal changes of intimate partner violence perpetrators in response to brief social contact with women
2022
This study investigated whether men with a history of real-life aggressive, dominant behavior show increases in testosterone and cortisol levels after brief social contact with women. Furthermore, we tested the prediction that such changes in hormones would be larger than those observed previously in young male students. Sixty-seven male participants convicted of intimate partner violence (IPV) either had brief social contact with a female confederate (experimental condition) or a male confederate (control condition). We also performed meta-analyses to investigate whether IPV perpetrators' hormonal responses were larger than the typical responses of young male students in prior studies. All…
