C18 alkyl-modified silica: A suitable tool for olive biophenol green extraction

Abstract A clean and straightforward methodology to assess the value of olive mill wastewater (OMWW) samples as well as to obtain biophenol-rich oils that can find employment in a variety of cosmetic, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products is described. The method employs chromatographic spherical organosilica microparticles, coupled to advanced analytical techniques. OMWW samples obtained in Sicily from two different organically grown cultivars during the exceptional 2015/2016 olive oil season were analyzed, leading us to establish the conditions for optimal extraction of hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol.

Si photomultipliers for bio-sensing applications

In this paper, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are proposed as optical detectors for bio sensing. Optical transduction is the most used detection mechanism in many biosensor applications, such as DNA microarray and real-time polymerase chain reaction. The performances of a 25 pixels device used for both applications are studied. The results confirm that the SiPM is more sensitive than the traditionally employed detectors. In fact, it is able to experimentally detect 1 nM and 100 fM of fluorophore concentrations in dried samples and solutions, respectively. We present and discuss in details the detector configuration and its characterization as fluorescence detector for bio sensing.

Oligonucleotide-Hybridization Fiber-Optic Biosensor using a Narrow Bandwidth Long Period Grating

Nanometric narrowband Long Period Gratings (LPG) are investigated for the implementation of improved fiber optic biosensors. The reduction of more than one order of magnitude in the linewidth of the LPG with respect standard LPG at 1500 nm, leads to the improvement of the resolution of the sensor. By selecting the proper fabrication parameters (high numerical aperture, relatively high order mode and large length), LPGs with a 3-dB bandwidth of 1.5 nm were fabricated. Quantification of rifampicin and rifabutin in plasma of tuberculosis patients by micellar liquid chromatography

A Micellar Liquid Chromatographic method is described to determine Rifampicin and Rifabutin in plasma from Tuberculosis patients. Samples were diluted in mobile phase and then directly injected, avoiding long and tedious extraction steps. The analytes were resolved from the matrix without interferences from endogenous compounds using a mobile phase of sodium dodecyl sulfate 0.15 mol L-1–6%(v/v) 1-pentanol and phosphate buffer at pH 3, running at 1 mL min−1 through a C18 column at 25 °C. Metal-organic frameworks consisting of amino-modified MIL-101(M: Cr, Al, and Fe) crystals have been synthesized and subsequently incorporated to glycidyl methacrylate monoliths to develop novel stationary phases for nano-liquid chromatography.
