Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles differ between ant body parts: implications for communication and our understanding of CHC diffusion.

Abstract Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) serve as communication signals and protect against desiccation. They form complex blends of up to 150 different compounds. Due to differences in molecular packing, CHC classes differ in melting point. Communication is especially important in social insects like ants, which use CHCs to communicate within the colony and to recognize nestmates. Nestmate recognition models often assume a homogenous colony odor, where CHCs are collected, mixed, and redistributed in the postpharyngeal gland (PPG). Genetic variation is the fuel of evolution, with standing genetic variation especially important for short-term evolution and local adaptation. To date, studies of spatiotemporal patterns of genetic variation in natural populations have been challenging, as comprehensive sampling is logistically difficult, and sequencing of entire populations costly. Experimental virus evolution in cancer cell monolayers, spheroids, and tissue explants

Viral laboratory evolution has been used for different applications, such as modeling viral emergence, drug-resistance prediction, and therapeutic virus optimization. However, these studies have been mainly performed in cell monolayers, a highly simplified environment, raising concerns about their applicability and relevance. To address this, we compared the evolution of a model virus in monolayers, spheroids, and tissue explants. Continuous-Variable Tomography of Solitary Electrons

A method for characterising the wave-function of freely-propagating particles would provide a useful tool for developing quantum-information technologies with single electronic excitations. Previous continuous-variable quantum tomography techniques developed to analyse electronic excitations in the energy-time domain have been limited to energies close to the Fermi level. We show that a wide-band tomography of single-particle distributions is possible using energy-time filtering and that the Wigner representation of the mixed-state density matrix can be reconstructed for solitary electrons emitted by an on-demand single-electron source. En este artículo analizamos una pintura flamenca inédita, que representa la escena de Susana y los viejos. Se conserva en una colección particular de Cartagena (Murcia). Está fechada en 1543 y firmada por F.D.V., monograma que plantea la principal incógnita de nuestra investigación. Tales siglas hacen pensar de inmediato en el pintor Frans Floris de Vriendt. En este sentido, los rasgos estilísticos de la obra están próximos al espíritu de este maestro. Sin embargo, diversas cuestiones nos impiden confirmar por el momento tal autoría.
