Cardiorespiratory fitness measured with cardiopulmonary exercise testing and mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease: A systematic review a…

2021

Highlights • High cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is associated with 58% lower all-cause mortality risk and 73% lower cardiovascular mortality risk compared to unfit counterparts. • Each 1 metabolic equivalent (1-MET) increase in CRF is associated with a 19% lower CVD mortality risk among patients with CVD. • Coronary artery disease patients with high CRF have a 68% lower all-cause mortality risk than their unfit counterparts. • Each 1-MET increase in CRF is associated with a 17% lower all-cause mortality risk among patients with coronary artery disease. • No significant associations were found between increments of 1-MET and lower mortality ris…

Inflammatory and cytotoxic responses of an alveolar-capillary coculture model to silica nanoparticles: Comparison with conventional monocultures

2011

Abstract Background To date silica nanoparticles (SNPs) play an important role in modern technology and nanomedicine. SNPs are present in various materials (tyres, electrical and thermal insulation material, photovoltaic facilities). They are also used in products that are directly exposed to humans such as cosmetics or toothpaste. For that reason it is of great concern to evaluate the possible hazards of these engineered particles for human health. Attention should primarily be focussed on SNP effects on biological barriers. Accidentally released SNP could, for example, encounter the alveolar-capillary barrier by inhalation. In this study we examined the inflammatory and cytotoxic response…

Synthesis, characterization, crystal structures and in vitro antistaphylococcal activity of organotin(IV) derivatives with 5,7-disubstituted-1,2,4-tr…

2011

Abstract New organotin(IV) complexes of 5,7-ditertbutyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine ( dbtp ) and 5,7-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine ( dptp ) with 1:1 and/or 1:2 stoichiometry were synthesized and investigated by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and 119 Sn Mossbauer in the solid state and by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, in solution. Moreover, the crystal and molecular structures of Et 2 SnCl 2 (dbtp) 2 and Ph 2 SnCl 2 (EtOH) 2 (dptp) 2 are reported. The complexes contain hexacoordinated tin atoms: in Et 2 SnCl 2 (dbtp) 2 two 5,7-ditertbutyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine molecules coordinate classically the tin atom through N(3) atom and the coordination around the tin atom shows a …

Hydrolysis of Monomethyl-, Dimethyl-, and Trimethyltin(IV) Cations in Fairly Concentrated Aqueous Solutions at I = 1 mol L-1 (NaNO3) and T = 298.15 K…

2011

The hydrolysis of methyltin(IV) cations at fairly high concentrations was investigated to evaluate the formation of polynuclear species in aqueous solution. The hydrolysis of monomethyltin(IV), dimethyltin(IV), and trimethyltin(IV) was studied by potentiometry at T = 298.15 K and at I = 1 mol L-1 in NaNO3 aqueous solutions. The results obtained gave evidence for the formation of the following polynuclear species, in addition to the mononuclear species already reported, which were also considered in the models proposed for the three systems investigated: [(CH3)Sn(OH)3]0, [(CH3)Sn(OH)4]-, [((CH3)Sn)2(OH)4]2+, [((CH3)Sn)2(OH)5]+, [((CH3)Sn)2(OH)7]-, [((CH3)Sn)3(OH)5]4+, [((CH3)Sn)3(OH)7]2þ, [(…

Genetic and Environmental Controls on Nitrous Oxide Accumulation in Lakes

2015

We studied potential links between environmental factors, nitrous oxide (N2O) accumulation, and genetic indicators of nitrite and N2O reducing bacteria in 12 boreal lakes. Denitrifying bacteria were investigated by quantifying genes encoding nitrite and N2O reductases (nirS/nirK and nosZ, respectively, including the two phylogenetically distinct clades nosZ(I) and nosZ(II)) in lake sediments. Summertime N2O accumulation and hypolimnetic nitrate concentrations were positively correlated both at the inter-lake scale and within a depth transect of an individual lake (Lake Vanajavesi). The variability in the individual nirS, nirK, nosZ(I), and nosZ(II) gene abundances was high (up to tenfold) a…

Study of Proton and 3He Induced Reactions on 235U at Low Energies

2014

Abstract Highly enriched 235 U targets were irradiated with 6.5 − 16.1 MeV protons and 20.4 − 42.0 MeV 3 He ions. The irradiated targets were measured with γ and α spectrometric methods to identify and quantify the produced reaction products. After primary activity measurements the targets were dissolved, and interesting Pu and Np reaction products were chemically separated from the target material, and measured for activity again. From the activity results it was possible to calculate the reaction cross sections for differently produced nuclides. The data obtained from the experiment resulted in earlier unknown excitation functions on proton and 3 He induced nuclear reactions on 235 U.

Neuromuscular Adaptations after Blood Flow Restriction Training Combined with Nutritional Supplementation: A Preliminary Study

2019

Blood fl ow restriction training (BFRT) has been shown to be an eff ective alternative technique to conventional resistance training to increase skeletal muscle hypertrophy and strength. However, neuromuscular response to BFRT in combination with nutritional supplementation has rarely been studied. Th e purpose of this study was to investigate the eff ects of BFRT combined with creatine monohydrate (CrM) and/or hydroxymethyl butyrate (HMB) on skeletal muscle size and strength. Fift een healthy males were randomly divided into three groups: a) BFRT without supplementation (C-BFR); b) BFRT with CrM supplementation (0.3 g / kg-1) (CrM-BFR); and c) BFRT with CrM (0.3 g / kg-1) and HMB (3 g) sup…

Validity of long-term and short-term recall of occupational sitting time in Finnish and Chinese office workers.

2020

Abstract Background As sedentary behavior is a global health issue, there is a need for methods of self-reported sitting assessment. The accuracy and reliability of these methods should also be tested in various populations and different cultural contexts. This study examined the validity of long-term and short-term recall of occupational sitting time in Finnish and Chinese subgroups. Methods Two cohort groups of office-based workers (58.6% female, age range 22–67 years) participated: a Finnish group (FIN, n  = 34) and a Chinese group (CHI, n  = 36). Long-term (past 3-month sitting) and short-term (daily sitting assessed on 5 consecutive days) single-item measures were used to assess self-r…
