The Hammerhead Ribozyme: A Long History for a Short RNA

2017

Small nucleolytic ribozymes are a family of naturally occurring RNA motifs that catalyse a self-transesterification reaction in a highly sequence-specific manner. The hammerhead ribozyme was the first reported and the most extensively studied member of this family. However, and despite intense biochemical and structural research for three decades since its discovery, the history of this model ribozyme seems to be far from finished. The hammerhead ribozyme has been regarded as a biological oddity typical of small circular RNA pathogens of plants. More recently, numerous and new variations of this ribozyme have been found to inhabit the genomes of organisms from all life kingdoms, although th…

Multiple Decay Mechanisms and 2D-UV Spectroscopic Fingerprints of Singlet Excited Solvated Adenine-Uracil Monophosphate

2016

The decay channels of singlet excited adenine uracil monophosphate (ApU) in water are studied with CASPT2//CASSCF:MM potential energy calculations and simulation of the 2D-UV spectroscopic fingerprints with the aim of elucidating the role of the different electronic states of the stacked conformer in the excited state dynamics. The adenine 1La state can decay without a barrier to a conical intersection with the ground state. In contrast, the adenine 1Lb and uracil S(U) states have minima that are separated from the intersections by sizeable barriers. Depending on the backbone conformation, the CT state can undergo inter-base hydrogen transfer and decay to the ground state through a conical …

Treatment of non-metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer in 2020: What is the best?

2020

Lately the development of 3 novel second-generation androgen receptor antagonists (enzalutamide, apalutamide, and darolutamide) chanced the treatment landscape of nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. After proofing their clinical efficacy in large phase III registration trials with good compatibilities and tolerable side effects currently all 3 substances are Food and Drug Administration-approved in nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. The present short review article provides an overview about these new treatment options and discusses their use in daily routine focusing on patient selection as well as on the impact of novel sensitive imaging modalities like pr…

Apogeum i kres stalinowskich obchodów Święta Pracy na Śląsku Opolskim (część 3)

2018

Aside from the official part of the celebrations, Labour Day included the entertainment part as well. In the afternoon of the lst of May numerous art and sport events, as well as games, lotteries etc. were organised in Opole and in other major localities of the voivodeship. These were received with acclamation by the community, and they noted considerable turnout. For that day the authorities arranged sale of products that were difficult to purchase on a daily basis, which constituted one more attraction of May Day celebrations. In the years 1949-1952 numerous Street fund-raisings were carried out among the participants of May Day events, and their outcomes in Opole voivodeship were judged …

Diagnosis and management of AML in adults: 2017 ELN recommendations from an international expert panel

2017

Abstract The first edition of the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) recommendations for diagnosis and management of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adults, published in 2010, has found broad acceptance by physicians and investigators caring for patients with AML. Recent advances, for example, in the discovery of the genomic landscape of the disease, in the development of assays for genetic testing and for detecting minimal residual disease (MRD), as well as in the development of novel antileukemic agents, prompted an international panel to provide updated evidence- and expert opinion-based recommendations. The recommendations include a revised version of the ELN genetic categories, a proposal for …

Use of asthma medication during pregnancy and risk of specific congenital anomalies: A European case-malformed control study.

2015

Background: Pregnant women with asthma need to take medication during pregnancy. Objective: We sought to identify whether there is an increased risk of specific congenital anomalies after exposure to antiasthma medication in the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: We performed a population-based case-malformed control study testing signals identified in a literature review. Odds ratios (ORs) of exposure to the main groups of asthma medication were calculated for each of the 10 signal anomalies compared with registrations with nonchromosomal, nonsignal anomalies as control registrations. In addition, exploratory analyses were done for each nonsignal anomaly. The data set included 76,249 reg…

Epidemiology of stroke and transient ischemic attacks: Current knowledge and perspectives

2015

International audience; Because of the growing size and aging of the world's population, the global burden of stroke is increasing dramatically. Current epidemiological data indicate that 16.9 million people suffer a stroke each year, which represents a global incidence of 258/100,000 year, with marked differences between high- and low-income countries, and an age-adjusted incidence 1.5 times higher in men than in women. Although primary prevention has contributed to a decrease in stroke incidence in high-income countries, the so-called 'epidemiological transition' has led to an increase in incidence in middle-to-low-income countries as well. In addition, the incidence of ischemic stroke in…

Evaluation of historical atmospheric pollution in an industrial area by dendrochemical approaches

2019

International audience; We conducted a dendrochemical study in order to evaluate the exposure of territories and 19 populations to different types of pollutants and to characterise the history of pollution in one of the 20 most intensely industrialised areas of Europe: the industrial port zone of Fos, also heavily 21 urbanised. 22 To perform the study, two tree species have been selected, Pinus halepensis and Populus nigra, on arural plot located roughly 20 km away from the industrial harbor, an urban plot located in the city of Fos-sur-Mer and an industrial plot. Our study indicated that poplar was a more relevant model forthe dendrochemical studies exhibiting a higher bioaccumulation capa…

How pre-service teachers perceive their 21st-century skills and dispositions : A longitudinal perspective

2021

Research-based discussions about 21st-century skills are currently needed; 21st-century skills refer to skills that today's students are expected to possess for successful future careers. The ways students perceive these skills or what kind of dispositions they have in this regard are significant. This paper provides an overview of the development of pre-service teachers' perceived 21st-century skills and dispositions. The quantitative data was collected in three phases during 2014, 2015, and 2016 at three Finnish universities. The number of respondents at each measurement point varied from 209 to 267. Data were analysed using latent growth curve modeling. The study focuses on students' per…

Obrońca honoru rodu Poniatowskich. Rzecz o Józefie Antonim Poniatowskim

2019

The article is a biographical sketch devoted to the figure of Prince Józef Poniatowski (1763–1813). It was created on the occasion of the 210th anniversary of the battle of Raszyn, which took place on April 19, 1809. During this battle Józef Poniatowski impressed both his soldiers and Austrian opponents with extraordinary bravery and heroism. In the same year he received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, which was established by Napoleon Bonaparte. Poniatowski said without false modesty that “God has entrusted me with the honor of Poles, I will give him to God.” He was also prophetically saying that “You must die bravely”. He was born in Vienna and raised in a German-speaking environm…
