Perioperative diaphragm point-of-care ultrasound as a prediction tool of postoperative respiratory failure in high-risk patients: A feasibility study…

2021

Abstract Introduction Respiratory muscle function in the postoperative period is a key to whether a patient develops Postoperative Respiratory Failure (PRF) or not. PRF occurs when the gas exchange does not meet metabolic needs. Ipsilateral paralysis of the hemidiaphragm after interscalenic brachial plexus block (ISB) causes an acute reduction of respiratory muscle function. This reduction does not cause PRF when the contralateral hemidiaphragm generates enough gas exchange to meet metabolic demands. Objectives To study the evolution of hemidiaphragmatic muscle function during the perioperative period with diaphragmatic ultrasound (D-POCUS), and use it as an innovative tool to predict PRF, …

Implementation of a gene panel for the genetic diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia

2020

Background: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a disease characterized by an alteration in the ciliary structure that causes an abnormal clearance of respiratory secretions. Its diagnosis is complex and is based on a combination of different techniques. The objective of this study was to design a gene panel including all known caustive genes, and to verify the utility for diagnostic in a cohort of Spanish patients. Methods: Multicenter cross-sectional study of patients with high suspicion of PCD, applying the criteria of the European Respiratory Society. Design a gene panel for mass sequencing with SeqCap EZ technology, including 44 PCD-related genes. Results: 79 patients were included, 53…

Implementation of a gene panel for genetic diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia

2021

Abstract Introduction Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is characterized by an alteration in the ciliary structure causing difficulty in the clearance of respiratory secretions. Diagnosis is complex and based on a combination of techniques. The objective of this study was to design a gene panel including all known causative genes, and to corroborate their diagnostic utility in a cohort of Spanish patients. Methods This was a multicenter cross-sectional study of patients with a high suspicion of PCD according to European Respiratory Society criteria. We designed a gene panel for massive sequencing using SeqCap EZ capture technology that included 44 genes associated with PCD. Results We includ…

Long-term positive airway pressure therapy is associated with reduced total cholesterol levels in patients with obstructive sleep apnea : data from t…

2020

Background and aim: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an independent risk factor for dyslipidemia. The current study examined the effects of positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment on lipid status in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA). Methods: The prospective cohort study enrolled 1564 OSA subjects (74% male, mean age 54 ± 11y, body mass index (BMI) 32.7 ± 6.6 kg/m2 and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) 40.3 ± 24.4 n/h) undergoing PAP therapy for at least three months (mean 377.6 ± 419.5 days). Baseline and follow-up total cholesterol (TC) from nine centers were analyzed. Repeated measures and logistic regression tests (adjusted for age, sex, weight changes, lipid lowering medication, PAP …

Artificial intelligence in the diagnosis of pediatric allergic diseases.

2020

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of data science pertaining to advanced computing machines capable of learning from data and interacting with the human world. Early diagnosis and diagnostics, self-care, prevention and wellness, clinical decision support, care delivery, and chronic care management have been identified within the healthcare areas that could benefit from introducing AI. In pediatric allergy research, the recent developments in AI approach provided new perspectives for characterizing the heterogeneity of allergic diseases among patients. Moreover, the increasing use of electronic health records and personal healthcare records highlighted the relevance of AI in …
