A weakly random Universe?

2010

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is characterized by well-established scales, the 2.7 K temperature of the Planckian spectrum and the $10^{-5}$ amplitude of the temperature anisotropy. These features were instrumental in indicating the hot and equilibrium phases of the early history of the Universe and its large scale isotropy, respectively. We now reveal one more intrinsic scale in CMB properties. We introduce a method developed originally by Kolmogorov, that quantifies a degree of randomness (chaos) in a set of numbers, such as measurements of the CMB temperature in some region. Considering CMB as a composition of random and regular signals, we solve the inverse problem of …

Laser spectroscopy of francium isotopes at the borders of the region of reflection asymmetry

2014

The magnetic dipole moments and changes in mean-square charge radii of the neutron-rich $^{218m,219,229,231}\text{Fr}$ isotopes were measured with the newly-installed Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) beam line at ISOLDE, CERN, probing the $7s~^{2}S_{1/2}$ to $8p~^{2}P_{3/2}$ atomic transition. The $\delta\langle r^{2}\rangle^{A,221}$ values for $^{218m,219}\text{Fr}$ and $^{229,231}\text{Fr}$ follow the observed increasing slope of the charge radii beyond $N~=~126$. The charge radii odd-even staggering in this neutron-rich region is discussed, showing that $^{220}\text{Fr}$ has a weakly inverted odd-even staggering while $^{228}\text{Fr}$ has normal staggering. This sugges…

Calculation of the two-loop heavy-flavor contribution to Bhabha scattering

2008

We describe in detail the calculation of the two-loop corrections to the QED Bhabha scattering cross section due to the vacuum polarization by heavy fermions. Our approach eliminates one mass scale from the most challenging part of the calculation and allows us to obtain the corrections in a closed analytical form. The result is valid for arbitrary values of the heavy fermion mass and the Mandelstam invariants, as long as s,t,u >> m_e^2.

Critical behavior with dramatic enhancement of modulational instability gain in fiber systems with periodic variation dispersion

2008

International audience; We analyze modulational instability (MI) of light waves in fiber systems with periodically varying dispersion. The dispersion fluctuation generates special waves, called nonconventional MI sidebands, which are shown to be highly sensitive to two fundamental system parameters. The first one is the average dispersion of the system. Surprisingly, the second parameter turns out to be the mean value of the dispersion coefficients of the two types of fibers of the system, which is then called “central dispersion.” These two parameters are used to control and optimize the MI process. In particular, we establish the existence of a critical region of the central dispersion at…

Experimental inhibition of nitric oxide increases Plasmodium relictum (lineage SGS1) parasitaemia.

2012

7 pages; International audience; Malaria is a widespread vector-borne disease infecting a wide range of terrestrial vertebrates including reptiles, birds and mammals. In addition to being one of the most deadly infectious diseases for humans, malaria is a threat to wildlife. The host immune system represents the main defence against malaria parasites. Identifying the immune effectors involved in malaria resistance has therefore become a major focus of research. However, this has mostly involved humans and animal models (rodents) and how the immune system regulates malaria progression in non-model organisms has been largely ignored. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of…

The Two Loop Crossed Ladder Vertex Diagram with Two Massive Exchanges

2008

We compute the (three) master integrals for the crossed ladder diagram with two exchanged quanta of equal mass. The differential equations obeyed by the master integrals are used to generate power series expansions centered around all the singular (plus some regular) points, which are then matched numerically with high accuracy. The expansions allow a fast and precise numerical calculation of the three master integrals (better than 15 digits with less than 30 terms in the whole real axis). A conspicuous relation with the equal-mass sunrise in two dimensions is found. Comparison with a previous large momentum expansion is made finding complete agreement.

Proteomic analysis of exosome-like vesicles derived from breast cancer cells.

2012

Background/Aim: The phenomenon of membrane vesicle-release by neoplastic cells is a growing field of interest in cancer research, due to their potential role in carrying a large array of tumor antigens when secreted into the extracellular medium. In particular, experimental evidence show that at least some of the tumor markers detected in the blood circulation of mammary carcinoma patients are carried by membrane-bound vesicles. Thus, biomarker research in breast cancer can gain great benefits from vesicle characterization. Materials and Methods: Conditioned medium was collected from serum starved MDA-MB-231 sub-confluent cell cultures and exosome-like vesicles (ELVs) were isolated by ultra…

Top-pair forward-backward asymmetry beyond next-to-leading order

2011

We make use of recent results in effective theory and higher-order perturbative calculations to improve the theoretical predictions of the QCD contribution to the top-quark pair production forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. In particular, we supplement the fixed-order next-to-leading order calculation with higher-order corrections from soft-gluon resummation at next-to next-to-leading order accuracy performed in two different kinematic schemes, which allows us to make improved predictions for the asymmetry in the $p\overline{p}$ and $t\overline{t}$ rest frames as a function of the rapidity and invariant mass of the $t\overline{t}$ pair. Furthermore, we provide binned results which …

Mapping geographical inequalities in oral rehydration therapy coverage in low-income and middle-income countries, 2000-17

2020

Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a form of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhoea that has the potential to drastically reduce child mortality; yet, according to UNICEF estimates, less than half of children younger than 5 years with diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) received ORS in 2016. A variety of recommended home fluids (RHF) exist as alternative forms of ORT; however, it is unclear whether RHF prevent child mortality. Previous studies have shown considerable variation between countries in ORS and RHF use, but subnational variation is unknown. This study aims to produce high-resolution geospatial estimates of relative and absolute coverage o…
