Reaction of the lithium salt of 1-(2'-pyridyl)-ortho-carborane, Li[1-R-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(10)](R = 2'-NC(5)H(4)), with sulfur, followed by hydrolysis, gave the mercapto-o-carborane, 1-R-2-SH-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(10) which forms chiral crystals containing helical chains of molecules linked by intermolecular S-H...N hydrogen bonds. The cage C(1)-C(2) and exo C(2)-S bond lengths (1.730(3) and 1.775(2)[Angstrom], respectively) are indicative of exo S=C pi bonding. The tin derivative 1-R-2-SnMe(3)-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(10), prepared from Li[1-R-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(10)] and Me(3)SnCl, crystallises with no significant intermolecular interactions. Photochemistry and Redox Chemistry of an Unsymmetrical Bimetallic Copper(I) Complex

The bimetallic copper(I) complex Cu2L2 (cis-1) is formed with high diasteroselectivity from [Cu(NCCH3)4][BF4] and HL (4-tert-butyl phenyl(pyrrolato-2-yl-methylene)amine) in a kinetically controlled reaction. cis-1 features a rather short Cu···Cu distance of 2.4756(6) A and is weakly emissive at room temperature in solution. Oxidatively triggered disproportionation of cis-1 yields elemental copper and the mononuclear copper(II) complex CuL2 (trans-2). One-electron reduction of trans-2 gives cuprate [2]– with a bent bis(pyrrolato) coordinated copper(I) entity. On the Road to MM′X Polymers: Redox Properties of Heterometallic Ni···Pt Paddlewheel Complexes

On the quest of heterometallic mixed-valence MM'X chains, we have prepared two stable discrete bimetallic compounds: the reduced (PPN)[ClNi(μ-OSCPh)4Pt] (PPN = bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium; OSCPh = benzothiocarboxylato) and the oxidized [(H2O)Ni(μ-OSCPh)4PtCl] species. The role of the aqua and chlorido axial ligands is crucial to facilitate oxidation of the {Ni(μ-OSCPh)4Pt} core. Experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that a NiPt-Cl/Cl-NiPt isomerization process occurs in the oxidized species. Some rare indigo derivatives have been known for a long time to be photochromic upon irradiation with red light, which should be advantageous for many applications. However, the absence of strategies to tune their thermal half-lives by modular molecular design as well as the lack of proper synthetic methods to prepare a variety of such molecules from the parent indigo dye have so far precluded their use. Partial reductive hydrolysis of a penta-CoII/III cluster [CoII4(H2O)2(CoIIIW9O34)(PW9O34)]12− (1) leads to the formation of [Co2{Co3(H2O)(Co(OH)2W7O26)(PW9O34)}2]22− (2). This polyoxometalate is made up of two capping [PW9O34]9− units and two bridging [W7O26]10− units that assemble to encapsulate a novel deca-CoII cluster core comprising octahedral and tetrahedral CoII ions.

Electrochemical instability of highly fluorinated tetraphenyl borates and syntheses of their respective biphenyls

Highly fluorinated tetraphenyl borate anions are of importance as weakly coordinating anions in metalorganic reactions. However, at high positive potentials their electrochemical stability in organic solvents is not sufficient. This was investigated by a comprehensive cyclic voltammetry study and can be used synthetically to generate highly fluorinated biphenyls.

Self-assembly of the tetrachlorido(oxalato)rhenate( iv ) anion with protonated organic cations: X-ray structures and magnetic properties

Two novel ReIV compounds of formulae [H2bpy][ReIVCl4(ox)] (1) and [H3biim]2[ReIVCl4(ox)] (2) [H2bpy2+ = 4,4′-bipyridinium dication, H3biim+ = 2,2′-biimidazolium monocation, and ox2− = oxalate dianion] have been synthesised and magneto-structurally characterised. 1 crystallises in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c, and 2 crystallises in the triclinic system with space group P[1 with combining macron]. The ReIV ion in 1 and 2 is six-coordinate, bonded to four chloride ions and two oxalate-oxygen atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. Synthesis, reactivity and structural studies of carboranyl thioethers and disulfides.

The equimolar reaction of 1-SH-2-R-1,2-closo-C2B10H10 (R = Me, H, Ph) with KOH in ethanol produces the thiolate species [1-S-2-R-1,2-closo-C2B10H10]−. These react with iodine to give the disulfide bridged dicluster (1-S-2-R-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)2 (R = H, Me, Ph) compounds as analytically pure, white and air-stable solids in high yield. Synthesis of monothioether bridged species is synthetically more difficult. In fact three procedures have been tested to obtain the thioether bridged dicluster compounds (2-R-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)2S (R = Me, H, Ph) but only (2-Me-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)2S was successfully synthesized and characterized.
