The effect of wood ash application on growth, leaf morphological and physiological traits of trees planted in a cutaway peatland

2021

Management of cutaway peatlands is a key issue in many countries. Whilst afforestation has been considered as a suitable after use option for cutaway peatlands, growing conditions after peat harvest are often adverse. To increase soil fertility and neutralise soil acidity, wood ash, an energy production by-product, can be used. In this study, we examined whether wood ash fertiliser affects growth (survival, height, root collar diameter), leaf morphological (mass, specific leaf area, leaf water content) and physiological traits (chlorophyll concentration, fluorescence parameters, photosynthetic and transpiration rate) of planted deciduous trees in a cutaway peatland in the central part of La…

Deepening Inside the Pictorial Layers of Etruscan Sarcophagus of Hasti Afunei: An Innovative Micro-Sampling Technique for Raman/SERS Analyses

2019

The Hasti Afunei sarcophagus is a large Etruscan urn, made up of two chalky alabaster monoliths. Dated from the last quarter of the third century BC, it was found in 1826 in the small town of Chiusi (Tuscany- Il Colle place) by a landowner, Pietro Bonci Casuccini, who made it part of his private collection. Removal of silicon from CFB-derived fly ash leachate in the context of phosphorus recovery

2018

High concentrations of dissolved silica in the acid leachate impose two major challenges on precipitation based recovery of phosphorus (P). Firstly, co-precipitation of colloidal silica in the acidic regimes decreases the purity and value of precipitated P-products. In addition, silica scaling on internal surfaces of equipment is also a problematic issue in industrial operations. Therefore, removal of dissolved silica prior to P-recovery process minimizes the risks of Si-contamination in P-products and Si-scaling. In the present study, silica removal was achieved by accelerated silica polymerization with higher acidity and ionic strength of mineral acid, which also assisted the leaching of …

Structural and electronic elucidation of a N-heterocyclic silylene vanadocene adduct

2017

The solid and solution state structure of the vanadium(II) N‐ heterocyclic silylene (NHSi) complex, [(SiIPr)V(Cp)2] (1) is reported ( SiIPr: 1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐1,3‐diaza‐2‐silacyclopent‐4‐ en‐2‐ylidene). The electronic structure of 1 is probed using combination of magnetic measurements, EPR spectroscopy and computational studies. The V–Si bond strength and complex forming mechanism between vanadocene and NHSi ligand is elucidated using computational methods.   peerReviewed

Los Falcó : a Family of Painters in 16th-century Valencia

2021

Targeted Drug Delivery in Plants: Enzyme‐Responsive Lignin Nanocarriers for the Curative Treatment of the Worldwide Grapevine Trunk Disease Esca

2019

Abstract Nanocarrier (NC)‐mediated drug delivery is widely researched in medicine but to date has not been used in agriculture. The first curative NC‐based treatment of the worldwide occurring grapevine trunk disease Esca, with more than 2 billion infected plants causing a loss yearly of $1.5 billion, is presented. To date, only repetitive spraying of fungicides is used to reduce chances of infection. This long‐term treatment against Esca uses minimal amounts of fungicide encapsulated in biobased and biodegradable lignin NCs. A single trunk injection of <10 mg fungicide results in curing of an infected plant. Only upon Esca infection, ligninolytic enzymes, secreted by the Esca‐associated fu…

Varying plant protein sources in the diet of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax differently affects lipid metabolism and deposition

2010

The liver activity of lipogenic enzymes, the lipid content in various tissues, and plasma lipid levels of major, were measured in sea bass (D. labrax) fed over 96 days either a, fish meal-based control diet or preparations where 70% of fish meal protein was replaced by wheat gluten singly or in combination with pea or soybean meals. Relative to the controls, sea bass fed the wheat gluten-based diet resulted in stimulated lipogenesis in liver and increased lipid deposition in muscle. The opposite occurred when a substantial amount of soybean meal was included in the diet. Mesenteric fat depots were apparently insensitive to major changes in dietary protein source in fish showing similar inta…
