Lipoprotein lipase-facilitated uptake of LDL is mediated by the LDL receptor

2007

LPL mediates the uptake of lipoproteins into different cell types independent of its catalytic activity. The mechanism of this process and its physiological relevance are not clear. Taking into account the importance of the endothelial barrier for lipoprotein uptake, in vitro studies with primary aortic endothelial cells from wild-type and low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR)-deficient (LDLR(-/-)) mice were performed. Addition of LPL almost doubled the uptake of LDL into wild-type cells. However, there was virtually no LPL-mediated change of LDL uptake into LDLR(-/-) cells. Upregulation of LDLR by lipoprotein-deficient serum/lovastatin in wild-type cells resulted in a 7-fold increase of …

Unusual attempted suicide or covered attempted homicide? A neck stabbing case report and review of literature.

2020

A medico-legal consult is frequently required in a clinical context in order to assess the eventual compatibility of specific wounds with a self- or hetero-infliction. Accordingly, the case of a 52-year-old man with a single, penetrating stab wound of the neck, reported as self-inflicted, is here presented. The forensic aspects, taken into account in order to determine the self- or hetero-infliction nature of the wound, are further discussed and compared to cases described in the literature.

Exercise for depression in older adults: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials adjusting for publication bias

2016

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the antidepressant effects of exercise in older adults, using randomized controlled trial (RCT) data. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of exercise in older adults, addressing limitations of previous works. RCTs of exercise interventions in older people with depression (≥ 60 years) comparing exercise vs. control were eligible. A random-effects meta-analysis calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) (95% confidence interval [95%CI]), meta-regressions, and trim, fill, and fail-safe number analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Eight RCTs were included, representing 138 participants in exercise arms and 129 controls. Exercise had a large and significant effect on…

Effect of comorbid anxiety, depressive, and personality disorders on treatment outcome of somatoform disorders

1999

Comorbid mental disorders of DSM-IV axis I and axis II have repeatedly been found to be a negative predictor for the treatment of axis I disorders, although recent contrary findings exist. Little is known about the effect of comorbidity on the therapy outcome of somatoform disorders. We compared three types of comorbidity, (1) personality disorders (PDs), (2) major depression (MDD) and anxiety (ANX) disorders, and (3) PDS and MDD and ANX, with regard to their relevance for the treatment outcome of somatoform disorders. One hundred twenty-six inpatients were assessed at least 4 weeks before admission to treatment, upon admission, and again at discharge. Somatoform, hypochondriacal, and depre…

FABP4 plasma levels are increased in familial combined hyperlipidemia

2010

The lipid profile of familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL) shares some characteristics with atherogenic dyslipidemia seen in diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) appears to be a determinant of atherogenic dyslipidemia. We examined relationships between FABP4 plasma concentrations, dyslipidemia, and metabolic variables in patients with FCHL. We studied 273 unrelated FCHL patients and 118 control subjects. FABP4 was higher in FCHL than controls, with mean levels of 21.8 (10.1) microg/l and 19.2 (9.2) microg/l, respectively (adjusted P= 0.012). In FCHL, FABP4 correlated to body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, insulin levels, and hom…

Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS): psychometric properties of the online Spanish version in a clinical sample with emotional disorders

2020

Abstract Background The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) is the most widely and frequently used scale to assess positive and negative affect. The PANAS has been validated in several languages, and it has shown excellent psychometric properties in the general population and some clinical samples, such as forensic samples, substance users, and adult women with fibromyalgia. Nevertheless, the psychometric properties of the scale have not yet been examined in clinical samples with anxiety, depressive, and adjustment disorders. In addition, the proliferation of Internet-based treatments has led to the development of a wide range of assessments conducted online with digital versions …

Intellectual engagements of accounting academics: The ‘forecasted losses' intervention

2022

This paper explores the social and political potential of accounting scholarship, presenting and discussing an intellectual intervention challenging a legislative reform that significantly affected Spanish industrial relations. In this reform, an accounting artifact (forecasted losses) played an unexpected role and was misrepresented, prompting a sizeable number of scholars to sign two manifestos in 2010 and 2012 against the use of forecasted losses made by the new legislation. As promoters of this manifesto, we perform in this paper a collaborative autoethnography to reflect on the context, events, reactions, and significance of this intervention for both the academic and the industrial re…

Mass transport problems obtained as limits of p-Laplacian type problems with spatial dependence

2014

Abstract. We consider the following problem: given a bounded convex domain Ω ⊂ ℝ N ${\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^N}$ we consider the limit as p → ∞ of solutions to - div ( b p - p | D u | p - 2 D u ) = f + - f - ${- \operatorname{div} (b_{p}^{-p} |Du|^{p-2} Du)=f_+ - f_-}$ in Ω and b p - p | D u | p - 2 ∂ u ∂ η = 0 ${ b_{p}^{-p} |Du|^{p-2} \frac{\partial u}{\partial \eta }=0}$ on ∂ Ω ${\partial \Omega }$ . Under appropriate assumptions on the coefficients bp that in particular verify that lim p → ∞ b p = b ${ \lim _{p\rightarrow \infty } b_p = b }$ uniformly in Ω ¯ ${\overline{\Omega }}$ , we prove that there is a uniform limit of u p j ${u_{p_j}}$ (along a sequence p j → ∞ ${p_j \rightarrow…
