Dimension of self-affine sets for fixed translation vectors
2016
An affine iterated function system is a finite collection of affine invertible contractions and the invariant set associated to the mappings is called self-affine. In 1988, Falconer proved that, for given matrices, the Hausdorff dimension of the self-affine set is the affinity dimension for Lebesgue almost every translation vectors. Similar statement was proven by Jordan, Pollicott, and Simon in 2007 for the dimension of self-affine measures. In this article, we have an orthogonal approach. We introduce a class of self-affine systems in which, given translation vectors, we get the same results for Lebesgue almost all matrices. The proofs rely on Ledrappier-Young theory that was recently ver…
Peter Senge puolustaa luontoa ja luonnollista oppimista
2002
Peter Senge on eniten siteerattuja kirjoittajia, kun puhutaan oppivista organisaatioista. Hänen tunnetuin kirjansa The Fifth Discipline ilmestyi Yhdysvalloissa vuonna 1990 ja sai miltei kulttikirjan maineen. Sengeä pidetään ihmisenä, joka tietää hyvin paljon oppivan organisaation kysymyksistä, hän on jotakin tällä alueella. Ennakkokuva vahvasta osaajasta oli vankkumaton lupautuessani haastattelemaan Sengeä. Tapaaminen muutti ennakkokäsityksiäni ja -odotuksiani.
Temporal Series Analysis on Avoidable Mortality for the Assessment of an Intervention Program in a Hospital
2017
Background: Avoidable mortality (AM) is one of the most important health indicators (HI) and represents the quality of care in a hospital. Objective: This study measured the efficacy of a training program for a hospital healthcare staff to reduce AM.Methods: This epidemiological study on community intervention analyzed time-series data on HI by semesters from 2008 to 2015. The pre-intervention phase was examined from January 2008 to December 2014; the intervention phase was investigated in the first semester of 2015; and the post-intervention phase was examined in the second semester of 2015.Results: Resindicate a series with a rising tendency until the 14th semester and a pronounced descent…

Differential Effects of Fluvoxamine and Other Antidepressants on the Biotransformation of Melatonin
2001
Melatonin, the predominant product of the pineal gland, is involved in the maintenance of diurnal rhythms. Nocturnal blood concentrations of melatonin have been shown to be enhanced by fluvoxamine, but not by other serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Because fluvoxamine is an inhibitor of several cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, the authors studied the biotransformation of melatonin and the effects of fluvoxamine on the metabolism of melatonin in vitro using human liver microsomes and recombinant human CYP isoenzymes. Melatonin was found to be almost exclusively metabolized by CYP1A2 to 6-hydroxymelatonin and N-acetylserotonin with a minimal contribution of CYP2C19. Both reactions were potently in…
Modulation of cytochrome P450 1A in sea bass liver by model substances and seawater extracts
1998
Abstract 1. 1. Immunochemical and catalytic assays for cytochrome P450 1A induction in liver of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax treated with different model substances and organic seawater extracts have been performed. 2. 2. Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities in fish liver were elevated by Arochlor 1254 (Aro), 3-methylcholanthrene (MC) and β-naphtoflavone (βNF). but not by phenobarbital (PB) treatment. 3. 3. Elevated levels of P450 1A protein followed by induction of EROD activity were detected only in βNF treated fish. 4. 4. Treatment of fish with organic seawater extracts revealed that there is no simple correlation between EROD activities and its catalyst P450 1A level. Seawate…
Effect of muscle type and animal category on fatty acid composition of bresaola made from meat of Cinisara cattle: preliminary investigation
2020
The bresaola could represent an alternative commercial opportunity for autochthonous dairy cattle farms. Therefore, a study was carried out to investigate the fatty acid (FA) composition of bresaola made using Semimembranosus (SMm), Semitendinosus (STm), and Biceps brachii (BBm) muscles from grazing young bulls (GB), housed young bulls (HB) or grazing adult cows (AC) of Cinisara breed. Animal category, fat content, feeding system, and type of muscle influenced the FA composition of bresaola. Fatter products, made from AC and HB meat, or with STm and BBm muscles showed lower polyunsaturated/saturated FA ratio. The bresaola from young bulls fed pasture-based diet showed an increased polyunsat…
Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Cartilage Regeneration Applications
2022
Chondropathies are increasing worldwide, but effective treatments are currently lacking. Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSCs) transplantation represents a promising approach to counteract the degenerative and inflammatory environment characterizing those pathologies, such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Umbilical cord- (UC-) MSCs gained increasing interest due to their multilineage differentiation potential, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties as well as higher proliferation rates, abundant supply along with no risks for the donor compared to adult MSCs. In addition, UC-MSCs are physiologically adapted to survive in an ischemic and nutrient-poor environment a…
Role of CD1A and HSP60 in the antitumoral response of oesophageal cancer
2011
Oesophageal cancer (OC) is one of the most common and severe forms of tumor. A wider knowledge of molecular mechanisms which lead to a normal epithelium becoming a neoplasm may reveal new strategies to improve treatment and outcome of this disease. In this review, we report recent findings concerning molecular events which take place during carcinogenesis of the oesophagus. In particular, we focus on the role of two molecules, CD1a and Hsp60, which are overexpressed in oesophageal and many other types of tumor. Both molecules may present tumor antigens and promote in situ the stimulation of an antitumoral immune activity. We suggest there is a synergistic action between these molecules. Fur…
