Assessing Complexity in Physiological Systems through Biomedical Signals Analysis
2020
The idea that most physiological systems are complex has become increasingly popular in recent decades [...]
Sentience and the Origins of Consciousness: From Cartesian Duality to Markovian Monism
2020
This essay addresses Cartesian duality and how its implicit dialectic might be repaired using physics and information theory. Our agenda is to describe a key distinction in the physical sciences that may provide a foundation for the distinction between mind and matter, and between sentient and intentional systems. From this perspective, it becomes tenable to talk about the physics of sentience and &lsquo
Investigation of insulin resistance in narcoleptic patients: dependent or independent of body mass index?
2011

Narcoleptic patients have been reported to suffer from an excess morbidity of Type 2 diabetes, even after correction for their often elevated body mass index. Methods: To explore whether narcolepsy is specifically associated with a propensity …
Dimethyl 2-(1-methyl-3-oxo-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-1-yl)malonate
2020
In this work we report a facile access to a 3,3-disubstituted isobenzofuranone by tandem addition/cyclization reaction to methyl 2-acetylbenzoate in the presence of dimethyl malonate, under basic conditions.

Pareto or log-normal? A recursive-truncation approach to the distribution of (all) cities
2012
Traditionally, it is assumed that the population size of cities in a country follows a Pareto distribution. This assumption is typically supported by finding evidence of Zipf's Law. Recent studies question this finding, highlighting that, while the Pareto distribution may fit reasonably well when the data is truncated at the upper tail, i.e. for the largest cities of a country, the log-normal distribution may apply when all cities are considered. Moreover, conclusions may be sensitive to the choice of a particular truncation threshold, a yet overlooked issue in the literature. In this paper, then, we reassess the city size distribution in relation to its sensitivity to the choice of truncat…
Opiskelijoita tarvitaan haastamaan opettajien käsitykset”, he kirjoittavat.
All polarization-maintaining assively mode-locked yb-doped fiber laser : pulse compression using an anomalous polarization-maintaining photonic cryst…
2019
We report the generation of short pulses at 1 μm using an all-polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber configuration. The pulses are provided by an all normal-dispersion Fabry-Perot Yb-doped cavity and are compressed with an anomalous polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM PCF). Opposed to standard configurations; here the filtering action is solely performed by the finite bandwidth of the gain medium. The laser generates 8 ps width sech 2 profile pulses at 1046.8 nm with a −10 dB bandwidth of 5.9 nm. After compression using the PM PCF, pulses with an FWHM of 3 ps were obtained, limited by the actual value of the available anomalous dispersion. We also report the changes in the outp…
Plasmonic Stripes in Aqueous Environment Co-Integrated With Si3N4 Photonics
2018
We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and the experimental characterization of gold-based plasmonic stripes butt-coupled with low-pressure-chemical-vapor-deposition (LPCVD)-based Si3N4 waveguides for the excitation of surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) modes in aqueous environment. Plasmonic gold stripes, in aqueous environment, with cross-sectional dimensions of 100 nm × 7 μm were interfaced with 360 nm × 800 nm Si3N4 waveguides cladded with low-temperature-oxide, exploiting linear photonic tapers with appropriate vertical (VO) and longitudinal (LO) offsets between the plasmonic and photonic waveguide facets. An interface insertion loss of 2.3 ± 0.3 dB and a plas…
