FACS-based protocol to assess cytotoxicity and clonogenic potential of colorectal cancer stem cells using a Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway reporter
2021
Summary Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a key role in tumor initiation and progression. A real-time tool to evaluate the activation of CSC-specific signaling pathways is crucial for the study of this cancer cell subset. Here, we present a protocol to monitor, in vitro, the activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, which is considered a functional biomarker for colorectal CSCs (CR-CSCs). This flow-cytometry-based protocol allows it to isolate CR-CSCs and to evaluate their cytotoxicity upon anti-tumor treatments. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Di Franco et al. (2021).
Entanglement robustness via spatial deformation of identical particle wave functions
2021
We address the problem of entanglement protection against surrounding noise by a procedure suitably exploiting spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems. To this purpose, we take two initially separated and entangled identical qubits interacting with two independent noisy environments. Three typical models of environments are considered: amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel and depolarizing channel. After the interaction, we deform the wave functions of the two qubits to make them spatially overlap before performing spatially localized operations and classical communication (sLOCC) and eventually computing the entanglement of the resulting state. This way, we show tha…
Quantum Probes for the Characterization of Nonlinear Media
2021
Active optical media leading to interaction Hamiltonians of the form H=λ˜(a+a†)ζ represent a crucial resource for quantum optical technology. In this paper, we address the characterization of those nonlinear media using quantum probes, as opposed to semiclassical ones. In particular, we investigate how squeezed probes may improve individual and joint estimation of the nonlinear coupling λ˜ and of the nonlinearity order ζ. Upon using tools from quantum estimation, we show that: (i) the two parameters are compatible, i.e., the may be jointly estimated without additional quantum noise
Sesquilinear forms associated to sequences on Hilbert spaces
2019
The possibility of defining sesquilinear forms starting from one or two sequences of elements of a Hilbert space is investigated. One can associate operators to these forms and in particular look for conditions to apply representation theorems of sesquilinear forms, such as Kato's theorems. The associated operators correspond to classical frame operators or weakly-defined multipliers in the bounded context. In general some properties of them, such as the invertibility and the resolvent set, are related to properties of the sesquilinear forms. As an upshot of this approach new features of sequences (or pairs of sequences) which are semi-frames (or reproducing pairs) are obtained.

Two-qubit entanglement generation through non-Hermitian Hamiltonians induced by repeated measurements on an ancilla
2020
In contrast to classical systems, actual implementation of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian dynamics for quantum systems is a challenge because the processes of energy gain and dissipation are based on the underlying Hermitian system&ndash
Multi-State Quantum Dissipative Dynamics in Sub-Ohmic Environment: The Strong Coupling Regime
2015
We study the dissipative quantum dynamics and the asymptotic behavior of a particle in a bistable potential interacting with a sub-Ohmic broadband environment. The reduced dynamics, in the intermediate to strong dissipation regime, is obtained beyond the two-level system approximation by using a real-time path integral approach. We find a crossover dynamic regime with damped intra-well oscillations and incoherent tunneling and a completely incoherent regime at strong damping. Moreover, a nonmonotonic behavior of the left/right well population difference is found as a function of the damping strength.
X-ray bursts and burst oscillations from the slowly spinning X-ray pulsar IGR J17480-2446 (Terzan 5)
2011
The newly discovered 11-Hz accreting pulsar, IGR J17480-2446, located in the globular cluster Terzan 5, has shown several bursts with a recurrence time as short as a few minutes. The source shows the shortest recurrence time ever observed from a neutron star. Here we present a study of the morphological, spectral and temporal properties of 107 bursts observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The recurrence time and the fluence of the bursts clearly anticorrelate with the increase in the persistent X-ray flux. The ratio between the energy generated by the accretion of mass and that liberated during bursts indicates that helium is ignited in a hydrogen-rich layer. Therefore, we conclude th…
Manuel Vázquez Montalbán y sus heterónimos en la revistra "Triunfo"
2022
The volume collects and analyzes the collaborations of Manuel Vázquez Montalbán in the magazine Triunfo, from the opinion article, to the report, from the short story to the comic strip, focusing on the use of heteronomous words. Following the path of the genre, the style and the narrative perspectives of the different contributions, the fertile osmosis between literary discourse and journalistic discourse is thus verified. The weekly appeared in 1946 in Valencia, playing a role of theater and film information and criticism. Since its transfer to Madrid in 1948, the magazine expanded its interests, inserting articles on domestic and foreign policy, until, in the 1960s, it became the intelle…
