Effective characterization of the phase and intensity profiles of asymmetrically distorted light pulses in optical fiber systems

2009

International audience; We address the problem of characterization of light pulses that propagate in long-haul high-bit-rate optical communication systems under strongly perturbed conditions. We show that the conventional technique for characterization of the phase and intensity profile of such pulses becomes qualitatively inconsistent when the pulse's profile is asymmetrically distorted with respect to its center of mass. We resolve these inconsistencies by partially reformulating the conventional technique by means of appropriate pulse parameters, which we call upgraded parameters, that allow a fair characterization of the intensity and phase of all types of light pulses, including those …

Existence of dynamical low-rank approximations to parabolic problems

2021

The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to dynamical low-rank evolution problems for parabolic partial differential equations in two spatial dimensions is shown, covering also non-diagonal diffusion in the elliptic part. The proof is based on a variational time-stepping scheme on the low-rank manifold. Moreover, this scheme is shown to be closely related to practical methods for computing such low-rank evolutions.

MEDLEM database, a data collection on large Elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean and Black seas

2020

The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains more than 3,000 records (with more than 4,000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 21 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The principal species included in the archive are the devil ray (1,868 individuals), the basking shark (935 individuals), the blue shark (622 individuals), and the great white shark (342 individuals). In the last decades, other species such as the thresher shark (187 individuals), the shortfin mako (180 individuals), and the spiny butterfly ray (138) were reported with increasing frequency. This was possibly due to increased public a…

Robots Like Me: Challenges and Ethical Issues in Aged Care.

2018

Robots have become a big issue in the twenty-first century, not least in elderly assistance. There are hopes that robots will make aged-care jobs less demanding, for example, they could help senior citizens maintain a longer independent life in their own home, assist caregivers in the nursing home, or provide company to the lonely. However, there are different opinions about the use of robots in our society. In 2012, a survey was conducted in 27 EU countries to examine the public's attitudes toward robots (Special Eurobarometer 382).1 More than 26.000 European citizens responded about the areas where they believe robots should be used as a priority or banned. The survey indicated that, in g…

The spectrum of weakly coupled map lattices

1998

We consider weakly coupled analytic expanding circle maps on the lattice Zd (for d 2 l), with small coupling strength c and coupling between two sites decaying exponentially with the distance. We study the spectrum of the associated (Perron-Frobenius) transfer operators. We give a FrCchet space on which the operator associated to the full system has a simple eigenvalue at 1 (corresponding to the SRB measure p* previously obtained by Bricmont-Kupiainen (BKl)) and the rest of the spectrum, except maybe for continuous spectrum, is inside a disc of radius smaller than one. For d = 1 we also construct Banach spaces of densities with respect to pr on which perturbation theory, applied to the diff…

Highly sensitive monoclonal antibody-based immunoassays for boscalid analysis in strawberries

2018

Boscalid is an agrochemical recently developed for crop protection and the most significant member of the succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor group of fungicides. In this study, a collection of high-affinity monoclonal antibodies was generated to boscalid. By using a series of haptens with a linker at alternative tethering sites of the boscalid framework, specific antibodies were isolated as well as antibodies that also recognized the main boscalid metabolite. Two immunoassays were developed using different ELISA formats. Optimized assays displayed very high sensitivities (limits of detection were near 0.01 µg/L). Trueness and precision for the determination of the target analyte in strawberr…

A parts-per-billion measurement of the antiproton magnetic moment

2017

The magnetic moment of the antiproton is measured at the parts-per-billion level, improving on previous measurements by a factor of about 350. Comparing the fundamental properties of normal-matter particles with their antimatter counterparts tests charge–parity–time (CPT) invariance, which is an important part of the standard model of particle physics. Many properties have been measured to the parts-per-billion level of uncertainty, but the magnetic moment of the antiproton has not. Christian Smorra and colleagues have now done so, and report that it is −2.7928473441 ± 0.0000000042 in units of the nuclear magneton. This is consistent with the magnetic moment of the proton, 2.792847350 ± 0.0…
