First measurement of the charge asymmetry in beauty-quark pair production.

The difference in the angular distributions between beauty quarks and antiquarks, referred to as the charge asymmetry, is measured for the first time in b[bar over b] pair production at a hadron collider. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb[superscript −1] collected at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector. The measurement is performed in three regions of the invariant mass of the b[bar over b] system. The results obtained are A[b[bar over b] over C](40 105 GeV/c[superscript 2]) = 1.6 ± 1.7 ± 0.6%, where A[b[bar over b] over C] is defined as the asymmetry in the difference in rapidity between jets formed from the beauty q…
The upgraded ISOLDE yield database – A new tool to predict beam intensities

At the CERN-ISOLDE facility a variety of radioactive ion beams are available to users of the facility. The number of extractable isotopes estimated from yield database data exceeds 1000 and is still increasing. Due to high demand and scarcity of available beam time, precise experiment planning is required. The yield database stores information about radioactive beam yields and the combination of target material and ion source needed to extract a certain beam along with their respective operating conditions. Bakalaura darba “Latvijas Padomju Komponistu savienības darbība (1944. – 1953.)” mērķis ir izpētīt kāda ir Latvijas Padomju komponistu savienības atjaunošanas nozīme un kādi uzdevumi tai ir jāveic staļinisma laikā. Šajā darbā analizēti Latvijas Padomju komponistu savienības darbības svarīgākie posmi un kas tiem bija raksturīgs. Lai veiktu šo pētījumu, galvenokārt tika izmantots LVA 423 fonda 1. apraksts un nedaudz arī LVA 423 fonda 4. un 3. apraksts, kuros ir visi materiāli, kas ir saistīti ar Latvijas Padomju komponistu savienību. Timing and patterns of the ENSO signal in Africa over the last 30 years: insights from normalized difference vegetation index data.

Abstract A more complete picture of the timing and patterns of the ENSO signal during the seasonal cycle for the whole of Africa over the three last decades is provided using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Indeed, NDVI has a higher spatial resolution and is more frequently updated than in situ climate databases, and highlights the impact of ENSO on vegetation dynamics as a combined result of ENSO on rainfall, solar radiation, and temperature. The month-by-month NDVI–Niño-3.4 correlation patterns evolve as follows. An ordered arrangement of molecular stripes with equidistant appearance is formed upon the adsorption of 3-hydroxybenzoic acid onto calcite (10.4) held at room temperature. In a detailed analysis of the next-neighbor stripe distances measured in noncontact atomic force microscopy images at various molecular coverages, we compare the observed stripe arrangement with a random arrangement of noninteracting stripes. The experimentally obtained distance distribution deviates substantially from what is expected for a random distribution of noninteracting stripes, providing direct evidence for the existence of a repulsive interaction between the stripes. Phase behaviour of deionized binary mixtures of charged colloidal spheres.

We review recent work on the phase behaviour of binary charged sphere mixtures as a function of particle concentration and composition. Both size ratios and charge ratios are varied over a wide range. By contrast to hard spheres the long ranged Coulomb interaction stabilizes the crystal phase at low particle concentrations and shifts the occurrence of amorphous solids to particle concentrations considerably larger than the freezing concentration. Depending on size- and charge ratios we observe upper azeotrope, spindle, lower azeotrope and eutectic types of phase diagrams, all known well from metal systems.
