Propagation Length of Antiferromagnetic Magnons Governed by Domain Configurations.

2019

Spintronics seeks to functionalize antiferromagnetic materials to develop memory and logic devices operating at terahertz speed and robust against external magnetic field perturbations. To be useful, such functionality needs to be developed in thin film devices. The key functionality of long-distance spin-transport has, however, so far only been reported in bulk single crystal antiferromagnets, while in thin films, transport has so far been limited to a few nanometers. In this work, we electrically achieve a long-distance propagation of spin-information in thin films of the insulating antiferromagnet hematite. Through transport and magnetic imaging, we demonstrate a strong correlation betwe…

Impact of buffer gas quenching on the $^1S_0$ $\to$ $^1P_1$ ground-state atomic transition in nobelium

2017

International audience; Using the sensitive Radiation Detected Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (RADRIS) techniquean optical transition in neutral nobelium (No, Z = 102) was identified. A remnant signal when delaying the ionizing laser indicated the influence of a strong buffer gas induced de-excitation of the optically populated level. A subsequent investigation of the chemical homologue, ytterbium (Yb, Z = 70), enabled a detailed study of the atomic levels involved in this process, leading to the development of a rate equation model. This paves the way for characterizing resonance ionization spectroscopy (RIS) schemes used in the studyof nobelium and beyond, where atomic properties are c…

Darboux curves on surfaces I

2017

International audience; In 1872, G. Darboux defined a family of curves on surfaces of $\mathbb{R}^3$ which are preserved by the action of the Mobius group and share many properties with geodesics. Here, we characterize these curves under the view point of Lorentz geometry and prove that they are geodesics in a 3-dimensional sub-variety of a quadric $\Lambda^4$ contained in the 5-dimensional Lorentz space $\mathbb{R}^5_1$ naturally associated to the surface. We construct a new conformal object: the Darboux plane-field $\mathcal{D}$ and give a condition depending on the conformal principal curvatures of the surface which guarantees its integrability. We show that $\mathcal{D}$ is integrable w…

Characterizations of convex approximate subdifferential calculus in Banach spaces

2016

International audience; We establish subdifferential calculus rules for the sum of convex functions defined on normed spaces. This is achieved by means of a condition relying on the continuity behaviour of the inf-convolution of their corresponding conjugates, with respect to any given topology intermediate between the norm and the weak* topologies on the dual space. Such a condition turns out to also be necessary in Banach spaces. These results extend both the classical formulas by Hiriart-Urruty and Phelps and by Thibault.

Foliations of $\mathbb{S}^3$ by Cyclides

2018

Throughout the last 2–3 decades, there has been great interest in the extrinsic geometry of foliated Riemannian manifolds (see [2], [4] and [22]). ¶One approach is to build examples of foliations with reasonably simple singularities with leaves admitting some very restrictive geometric condition. For example (see [22], [23] and [17]), consider in particular foliations of $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ by totally geodesic or totally umbilical leaves with isolated singularities. ¶The article [14] provides families of foliations of $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ by Dupin cyclides with only one smooth curve of singularities. Quadrics and other families of cyclides like Darboux cyclides provide other examples. These foliat…

La théorie des lignes parallèles de Johann Heinrich Lambert

2014

International audience; The memoir "Theory of parallel lines" (1766) by Johannes Heinrich Lambert is one of the founding texts of hyperbolic geometry, even though his author conceived it as an attempt to show that this geometry does not exist. In fact, Lambert developed that theory with the hope of finding a contradiction. In doing so, he obtained several fundamental results of hyperbolic geometry. This was sixty years before the first writings of Lobachevsky and Bolyai appeared in print. This book contains the first complete translation of Lambert's memoir as well as mathematical and historical commentaries.

Conjugate and cut loci of a two-sphere of revolution with application to optimal control

2008

Abstract The objective of this article is to present a sharp result to determine when the cut locus for a class of metrics on a two-sphere of revolution is reduced to a single branch. This work is motivated by optimal control problems in space and quantum dynamics and gives global optimal results in orbital transfer and for Lindblad equations in quantum control.

Constrained differential inclusions with nonlocal initial conditions

2017

International audience; We show existence for the perturbed sweeping process with nonlocal initial conditions under very general hypotheses. Periodic, anti-periodic, mean value and multipoints conditions are included in this study. We give abstract results for differential inclusions with nonlocal initial conditions through bounding functions and tangential conditions. Some applications to differential complementarity systems and to vector hysteresis are given.
