Physical exercise induces rapid release of small extracellular vesicles into the circulation

2015

Cells secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) by default and in response to diverse stimuli for the purpose of cell communication and tissue homeostasis. EVs are present in all body fluids including peripheral blood, and their appearance correlates with specific physiological and pathological conditions. Here, we show that physical activity is associated with the release of nano-sized EVs into the circulation. Healthy individuals were subjected to an incremental exercise protocol of cycling or running until exhaustion, and EVs were isolated from blood plasma samples taken before, immediately after and 90 min after exercise. Small EVs with the size of 100–130 nm, that carried proteins character…

Positive L1 observer design for positive Switched systems

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00034-013-9737-6 This paper investigates the problem of L1 observer design for positive switched systems. Firstly, a new kind of positive L1 observer is proposed for positive switched linear delay-free systems with observable and unobservable subsystems. Based on the average dwell time approach, a sufficient condition is proposed to ensure the existence of the positive L1 observer. Under the condition obtained, the estimated error converges to zero exponentially, and the L1 -gain from the disturbance input to the estimated error is less t…

Self-reported consumption of wine and other alcoholic beverages in a German wine area

2013

Petra Fronk,1 Maria Blettner,2 Heinz Decker1 1Institute for Molecular Biophysics, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany; 2Institute for Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany Purpose: To describe the consumption of alcoholic beverages in a German wine area, with special attention to the number of people drinking more than the tolerable upper alcohol intake level (TUAL). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a mailed questionnaire, to investigate the weekly consumption of wine, beer, and spirits during the preceding 12 months in Mainz, the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Reproductive Physiology ofAedes(Aedimorphus)vexans(Diptera: Culicidae) in Relation to Flight Potential

2001

Total protein, lipid, and glycogen of Aedes vexans (Meigen) were related linearly to body size at eclosion. Starvation after emergence led to the determination of minimal irreducible amounts of protein, lipid, and glycogen and the availability of the teneral reserves, whereas access to sucrose revealed the potential for reserve synthesis. Glycogenesis and lipogenesis increased reserves approximately 10-fold the teneral value within 1 and 2 wk after emergence, respectively. Carbohydrate feeding was an essential behavior before blood feeding and oogenesis commenced. Female flight was tested on a flight mill. Maximal flights of 10-17 km in a single night occurred at 2 wk posteclosion and paral…

Rapid cell growth regulation in Arabidopsis

2021

Plant motions occur across a wide spectrum of timescales, ranging from seed dispersal through bursting (milliseconds) and stomatal opening (minutes) to long-term adaptation of gross architecture. Relatively fast motions include water-driven growth as exemplified by root cell expansion under abiotic/biotic stresses or during gravitropism. A showcase is a root growth inhibition in 30 seconds triggered by the phytohormone auxin. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms are still largely unknown. This thesis covers the studies about this topic as follows. By taking advantage of microfluidics combined with live imaging, pharmaceutical tools, and transgenic lines, we examined the kinetics o…

BVLOS UAS Operations in Highly-Turbulent Volcanic Plumes.

2020

Long-range, high-altitude Unoccupied Aerial System (UAS) operations now enable in-situ measurements of volcanic gas chemistry at globally-significant active volcanoes. However, the extreme environments encountered within volcanic plumes present significant challenges for both air frame development and in-flight control. As part of a multi-disciplinary field deployment in May 2019, we flew fixed wing UAS Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) over Manam volcano, Papua New Guinea, to measure real-time gas concentrations within the volcanic plume. By integrating aerial gas measurements with ground- and satellite-based sensors, our aim was to collect data that would constrain the emission rate of …

Self in NARS, an AGI System

2018

This article describes and discusses the self-related mechanisms of a general-purpose intelligent system, NARS. This system is designed to be adaptive and to work with insufficient knowledge and resources. The system’s various cognitive functions are uniformly carried out by a central reasoning-learning process following a “non-axiomatic” logic. This logic captures the regularities of human empirical reasoning, where all beliefs are revisable according to evidence, and the meaning of concepts are grounded in the system’s experience. NARS perceives its internal environment basically in the same way as how it perceives its external environment although the sensors involved are completely diff…

Fecundity determines the outcome of founding queen associations in ants

2021

AbstractAnimal cooperation evolved because of its benefits to the cooperators. Pleometrosis in ants - the cooperation of queens to found a colony - benefits colony growth, but also incurs costs for some of the cooperators because only one queen usually survives the association. While several traits are associated with queen survival, they tend to be confounded and it is unclear which factor specifically determines the outcome of pleometrosis. In this study, we used the ant Lasius niger to monitor offspring production in colonies founded by one or two queens. Then, we experimentally paired queens that differed in fecundity but not in size, and vice versa, to disentangle the effect of these f…
