La sensación sonora y visual del mar en la pintura valenciana de finales del siglo XIX

2010

This work presents an interpretation from a phenomenological point of view of the visual and sonorous experience on the perception of the sea in the context of XIX century Valencian painting. The use of senses to generate images of the sea establishes a network of links between them that plays a key role in the comprehension and interpretation of its image. The analysis starts from the identification of an autonomous and separated poetics of the sea, focusing on the study of its immensity from the different points of view that its contemplation presents. It ends on the interpretation of the sonorous and mobile potentiality of its matter. The study has identified in the chosen images of the …

Amulet, Cure and Ornament. Red Coral in Trapani during the Plague Epidemics of 1575 and 1624

2023

Among the numerous epidemic episodes that have affected western Sicily in modern times, sadly famous are the plague of 1575 and 1624. The latter was the most serious occurred in Trapani and the one of which the most dramatic testimonies are preserved. Trapani quickly assumed the role of the starting point of the plague epidemic that raged in Sicily until 1626. The documents of the time testify to the coexistence of popular and religious beliefs of a superstitious nature with embryonic policies to contain the contagion on a scientific basis. The most famous doctor of the time in Trapani, Pietro Parisi, as it is known also linked to Malta, among other things recommended a coral-based therapy …

Clinical recrudescence of chronic untreated P. malariae infection after BNT162b2 CoVID-19 vaccine

2022

We described a case of clinical reactivation of chronic P. malariae infection following CoVID-19 vaccination with BNT162b2 (Pifzer-Biontech CoVID-19 vaccine) in a 48-year old Italian man.The patient came to our attention for fever of unknown origin show a quartan pattern (every third day) associated to splenomegaly, the onset of the fever occurred one month after CoVID-19 vaccination with BNT162b2. P. malariae was diagnosed using CarestartTM malaria rapid test and Polymerase-Chain Reaction. Post-vaccine transient reduction of immune reactivity is described in literature, although the mechanism is unknown.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.CC_BY_NC_ND_4.0

Composite nanoparticles based on hyaluronic acid chemically cross-linked with alpha,beta-polyaspartylhydrazide.

2007

In this paper, new composite nanoparticles based on hyaluronic acid (HA) chemically cross-linked with alpha, beta polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) were prepared by the use of a reversed-phase microemulsion technique. HA-PAHy nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, confirming the occurrence of the chemical cross-linking, dimensional analysis, and transmission electron micrography, showing a sub-micrometer size and spherical shape. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated the presence of HA on the nanoparticle surface. A remarkable affinity of the obtained nanoparticles toward aqueous media that simulate some biological fluids was found. Stability studies showed the absence of chem…

in vitro biological evaluation of folate-functionalized block copolymer micelles for selective anti-cancer drug delivery.

2008

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of folic acid-functionalized diblock copolymer micelles to improve the delivery and uptake of two poorly water-soluble anti-tumor drugs, tamoxifen and paclitaxel, to cancer cells through folate receptor targeting. The diblock copolymer used in this study comprised a hydrophilic poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine] (MPC) block, carrying at the chain end the folate targeting moiety, and a pH-sensitive hydrophobic poly[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (DPA) block (FA-MPC-DPA). The drug-loading capacities of tamoxifen- and paclitaxel-loaded micelles were determined by high performance liquid chromatography and the m…

“Mitotic Slippage” and Extranuclear DNA in Cancer Chemoresistance: A Focus on Telomeres

2020

Mitotic slippage (MS), the incomplete mitosis that results in a doubled genome in interphase, is a typical response of TP53-mutant tumors resistant to genotoxic therapy. These polyploidized cells display premature senescence and sort the damaged DNA into the cytoplasm. In this study, we explored MS in the MDA-MB-231 cell line treated with doxorubicin (DOX). We found selective release into the cytoplasm of telomere fragments enriched in telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), telomere capping protein TRF2, and DNA double-strand breaks marked by γH2AX, in association with ubiquitin-binding protein SQSTM1/p62. This occurs along with the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) and DNA repa…
