¿Por qué la literatura?

2021

In poetry, as well as in a good part of prose works, the rhythm of words is the music that governs reason and emotion. Literature occupies an important place in my creation. In this article I describe the different procedures in which I configure its presence in my music and the main themes in four of my works: Envoi, Como el viento, Maya and Transmutación.

A cooperative mobile robot and manipulator system (Co-MRMS) for transport and lay-up of fibre plies in modern composite material manufacture

2021

AbstractComposite materials are widely used in industry due to their light weight and specific performance. Currently, composite manufacturing mainly relies on manual labour and individual skills, especially in transport and lay-up processes, which are time consuming and prone to errors. As part of a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of deploying autonomous robotics for composite manufacturing, this paper presents a case study that investigates a cooperative mobile robot and manipulator system (Co-MRMS) for material transport and composite lay-up, which mainly comprises a mobile robot, a fixed-base manipulator and a machine vision sub-system. In the proposed system, marker-base…

Managing group work in the classroom: An international study on perceived benefits and risks based on students’ cultural background and gender

2018

Working in groups has become an essential part of success of every organization operating in global economy. Therefore, the business sector has created an imperative for higher education institutions (HEIs) to modify study programs and prepare students to be effective team players. However, while group work has been highly encouraged among university students, their opinions on this practice remain rather neglected. In addition, the role of culture and gender in students’ perceptions of group work has received little attention. The purpose of this study is to examine how university students perceive group work in terms of its benefits and risks and whether their national culture and gender …

Sharing Mare Nostrum: An Analysis of Mediterranean Maritime History Articles in English-Language Journals.

2015

This discussion paper is a follow-up to a previous bibliometric analysis of articles published in The International Journal of Maritime History and maritime-themed articles published in other economic and business history journals over the last 25 years. The paper looks more closely at articles dealing with the Mediterranean and articles written by scholars from the Mediterranean countries. The article is structured around five propositions about current trends in Mediterranean maritime history publishing in English-language journals.

Mutation rate of bacteriophage ΦX174 modified through changes in GATC sequence context

2011

Bacteriophage ΦX174 has a relatively high mutation rate of 10⁻⁶ substitutions per nucleotide per strand copying. A thirty-fold reduction in the mutation rate was achieved by introducing seven GATC sequences in its genome. This motif allows for methyl-directed mismatch repair and is strongly avoided in nature by ΦX174 and other phages.

Ultimate Shear of RC Beams with Corroded Stirrups and Strengthened with FRP

2019

Transverse reinforcement plays a key role in the response behavior of reinforced concrete beams. Therefore, corrosion of steel stirrups may change the failure mode of elements from bending to shear, leading to a brittle and catastrophic crisis. It is important to strengthen reinforced concrete beams with corroded stirrups to enhance the shear resistance. This paper presents a formulation, based on the modified compression field theory, to estimate the ultimate shear of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with FRP, because of stirrup corrosion. The detrimental effect of corrosion on steel stirrup yield strength was taken into account by introducing an empirical decay law. The effective st…

Role of Social Partners for Work-Based Learning: Results of Surveys

2016

Abstract Introduction of work-based learning (WBL) in Latvia has required new approaches in decision making of different stakeholders. Experience from countries with long-standing WBL tradition has shown the numerous advantages but also the challenges this approach presents. One of these challenges is the need for new forms and mechanisms of cooperation among the key stakeholders – policy makers, public administrators, employers, educators and social partners. The current paper analyses the results of scientific research in this field, as well as uses the empirical results of two surveys performed by the authors: a survey of public sector experts and a survey of employers in Latvia. In orde…

Nucleoside Analogue Mutagenesis of a Single-Stranded DNA Virus: Evolution and Resistance

2012

ABSTRACT It has been well established that chemical mutagenesis has adverse fitness effects in RNA viruses, often leading to population extinction. This is mainly a consequence of the high RNA virus spontaneous mutation rates, which situate them close to the extinction threshold. Single-stranded DNA viruses are the fastest-mutating DNA-based systems, with per-nucleotide mutation rates close to those of some RNA viruses, but chemical mutagenesis has been much less studied in this type of viruses. Here, we serially passaged bacteriophage ϕX174 in the presence of the nucleoside analogue 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). We found that 5-FU was unable to trigger population extinction for the range of conce…
