A note on the dimensions of Assouad and Aikawa

2013

We show that in Euclidean space and other regular metric spaces, the notions of dimensions defined by Assouad and Aikawa coincide. In addition, in more general metric spaces, we study the relationship between these two dimensions and a related codimension and give an application of the Aikawa (co)dimension for the Hardy inequalities.

Measures with predetermined regularity and inhomogeneous self-similar sets

2016

We show that if $X$ is a uniformly perfect complete metric space satisfying the finite doubling property, then there exists a fully supported measure with lower regularity dimension as close to the lower dimension of $X$ as we wish. Furthermore, we show that, under the condensation open set condition, the lower dimension of an inhomogeneous self-similar set $E_C$ coincides with the lower dimension of the condensation set $C$, while the Assouad dimension of $E_C$ is the maximum of the Assouad dimensions of the corresponding self-similar set $E$ and the condensation set $C$. If the Assouad dimension of $C$ is strictly smaller than the Assouad dimension of $E$, then the upper regularity dimens…

Weakly controlled Moran constructions and iterated functions systems in metric spaces

2011

We study the Hausdorff measures of limit sets of weakly controlled Moran constructions in metric spaces. The separation of the construction pieces is closely related to the Hausdorff measure of the corresponding limit set. In particular, we investigate different separation conditions for semiconformal iterated function systems. Our work generalizes well known results on self-similar sets in metric spaces as well as results on controlled Moran constructions in Euclidean spaces.

Tangential behavior of functions and conical densities of Hausdorff measures.

2005

We construct a $C^1$-function $f\colon [0,1]\to \mathbb{R}$ such that for almost all $x\in(0,1)$, there is $r>0$ for which $f(y)>f(x)+f'(x)(y-x)$ when $y\in(x,x+r)$ and $f(y)< f(x)+f'(x)(y-x)$ when $y\in(x-r,x)$. The existence of such functions is related to a problem concerning conical density properties of Hausdorff measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also discuss the tangential behavior of typical $C^1$-functions, using an improvement of Jarnik's theorem on essential derived numbers

A proof of Carleson's $\varepsilon^2$-conjecture

2019

In this paper we provide a proof of the Carleson $\varepsilon^2$-conjecture. This result yields a characterization (up to exceptional sets of zero length) of the tangent points of a Jordan curve in terms of the finiteness of the associated Carleson $\varepsilon^2$-square function.

Improved Bounds for Hermite–Hadamard Inequalities in Higher Dimensions

2019

Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a convex domain and let $f:\Omega \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a positive, subharmonic function (i.e. $\Delta f \geq 0$). Then $$ \frac{1}{|\Omega|} \int_{\Omega}{f dx} \leq \frac{c_n}{ |\partial \Omega| } \int_{\partial \Omega}{ f d\sigma},$$ where $c_n \leq 2n^{3/2}$. This inequality was previously only known for convex functions with a much larger constant. We also show that the optimal constant satisfies $c_n \geq n-1$. As a byproduct, we establish a sharp geometric inequality for two convex domains where one contains the other $ \Omega_2 \subset \Omega_1 \subset \mathbb{R}^n$: $$ \frac{|\partial \Omega_1|}{|\Omega_1|} \frac{| \Omega_2|}{|\partial \Ome…

When are profinite many-sorted algebras retracts of ultraproducts of finite many-sorted algebras?

2017

For a set of sorts $S$ and an $S$-sorted signature $\Sigma$ we prove that a profinite $\Sigma$-algebra, i.e., a projective limit of a projective system of finite $\Sigma$-algebras, is a retract of an ultraproduct of finite $\Sigma$-algebras if the family consisting of the finite $\Sigma$-algebras underlying the projective system is with constant support. In addition, we provide a categorial rendering of the above result. Specifically, after obtaining a category where the objects are the pairs formed by a nonempty upward directed preordered set and by an ultrafilter containing the filter of the final sections of it, we show that there exists a functor from the just mentioned category whose o…

Sharp estimate on the inner distance in planar domains

2020

We show that the inner distance inside a bounded planar domain is at most the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the boundary of the domain. We prove this sharp result by establishing an improved Painlev\'e length estimate for connected sets and by using the metric removability of totally disconnected sets, proven by Kalmykov, Kovalev, and Rajala. We also give a totally disconnected example showing that for general sets the Painlev\'e length bound $\kappa(E) \le\pi \mathcal{H}^1(E)$ is sharp.

Local structure of self-affine sets

2011

The structure of a self-similar set with open set condition does not change under magnification. For self-affine sets the situation is completely different. We consider planar self-affine Cantor sets E of the type studied by Bedford, McMullen, Gatzouras and Lalley, for which the projection onto the horizontal axis is an interval. We show that within small square neighborhoods of almost each point x in E, with respect to many product measures on address space, E is well approximated by product sets of an interval and a Cantor set. Even though E is totally disconnected, the limit sets have the product structure with interval fibres, reminiscent to the view of attractors of chaotic differentia…

Banach partial *-algebras: an overview

2019

A Banach partial $*$-algebra is a locally convex partial $*$-algebra whose total space is a Banach space. A Banach partial $*$-algebra is said to be of type (B) if it possesses a generating family of multiplier spaces that are also Banach spaces. We describe the basic properties of these objects and display a number of examples, namely, $L^p$-like function spaces and spaces of operators on Hilbert scales or lattices. Finally we analyze the important cases of Banach quasi $*$-algebras and $CQ^*$-algebras.
