Interoceptive sensitivity is a biologically determined, constitutional trait of an individual. High interoceptive sensitivity has been often associated with proneness to anxiety. This association has been explained by elevated autonomic responsiveness in anxious individuals. However, in a heartbeat discrimination task (discrimination of heartbeats’ simultaneity to an external stimulus) low cardiac responsiveness has accompanied enhanced performance. The relation between these factors seems task dependent, and cannot comprehensively explain the link between interoceptive sensitivity and anxiety. Food is an effective symbol capable of strongly evoking a cultural identity. In the case of Sicily, this role is mainly played by pastry, and in particular by two sweets: cannolo (the singular of cannoli) and cassata. But how does it happen that just these two preparations, rather than others, take on this value? What are their meanings and what determines them? Are cannolo and cassata the expression of a remote and spontaneous tradition as we generally like to believe? Semiotic analysis not only leads us to understand the complexity of these two pieces of a gastronomy, but also to reflect on the whole notion of symbol, rethinking its limits and possibilities.

A route to simple nonionic surfactants

AbstractA method for the synthesis of nonionic surfactants – N-alkyl-O-(2-hydroxyethyl) carbamates is proposed by acylation of fatty amines with ethylene carbonate without any solvent or catalyst. The surface tension of the prepared surfactants was measured, toxicity and biodegradability were determined for the surfactant with n-dodecyl as a hydrophobic group and N-monosubstituted amide and hydroxyl groups for their hydrophilic part.

Synthesis and selected properties of metallo and metal-free 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octacarboxyphthalocyanines

This review article reports methods of synthe sis and selected physicochemical properties of metallo and metal-free 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24–octacarboxyphthalocyanines. The most frequently used methods of synthesis for this class of co mpounds are described in this article. Moreover, aggregation, catalytic and photocatalytic properties of these complexes are presented. Potential applications of metallo and metal-free 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24–octacarboxyphthalocyanines are also given.

Water-Soluble Cuprizone Derivative: Synthesis, Characterization, and in Vitro Studies

The cuprizone mouse model is one of the most accepted model systems for the investigation of oligodendrocyte degeneration, a process critically involved in the pathogenesis of diseases such as multiple sclerosis or schizophrenia. In order to substitute the in vivo experiments by in vitro approaches, the amine derivative BiMPi is introduced as a water-soluble alternative to cuprizone. Regarding superoxide dismutase activity, toxicity for oligodendrocytes, and disturbance of mitochondrial membrane potential, BiMPi shows similar in vitro effects as is observed in vivo for cuprizone. peerReviewed

Dyes of a Shadow Theatre: Investigating Tholu Bommalu Indian Puppets through a Highly Sensitive Multi-Spectroscopic Approach

Tholu Bommalu are typical leather puppets of the traditional Indian shadow theatre. Two of these objects are part of a collection in the International Puppets Museum “Antonio Pasqualino” (Palermo, Sicily, Italy), which can count on one hundred-seventy-three of artifacts. These Indian puppets were investigated to obtain information related to the use of dyes for their manufacturing through a multi-technical approach exploiting the combination of highly sensitive spectroscopic techniques.
