Accumulating data supports the concept that alterations of cholesterol metabolism might influence the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the brain. Changes in the neuronal production of Aβ have been described as a function of cholesterol levels, thus suggesting a causal link between cholesterol homeostasis dysregulation and AD pathogenesis. Under physiological conditions, cholesterol uptake in the brain is efficiently prevented by the blood-brain barrier, and mature neurons are thought to rely on glial cells for their cholesterol supply. The ABC of society: Perceived similarity in agency/socioeconomic success and conservative-progressive beliefs increases intergroup cooperation

Abstract The dimensions that explain which societal groups cooperate more with which other groups remain unclear. We predicted that perceived similarity in agency/socioeconomic success and conservative-progressive beliefs increases cooperation across groups. Self-identified members (N = 583) of 30 society-representative U.S. groups (gays, Muslims, Blacks, upper class, women, Democrats, conservatives etc.) played an incentivized one-time continuous prisoner's dilemma game with one self-identified member of each of these groups. Interaction Between Amines and N-Haloimides: a New Motif for Unprecedentedly Short Br...N and I...N Halogen Bonds

The complexes of N-bromosuccinimide or N-iodosuccinimide with a halogen bond acceptor, either 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) or 1,3,5-triazine (TRZ), led to an unprecedentedly strong (CO)2N–X⋯N halogen bond synthon (X = Br or I) determined from crystal structures of [DABCO]·[NBS]22, [HMTA]·[NBS]22, [TRZ]·[NIS]22 and [HMTA]·[NIS]44. The Br⋯N distances with DABCO and with HMTA donors were 2.347 A and 2.414 A being remarkably shorter (31% and 29%) than the sum of the VDW radii of nitrogen and bromide atoms, respectively. NI halogen bonding supported stabilization of a discrete pseudo-linear [I12]2− polyiodide

Two different dicationic N-donors, based on the DABCO diamine, have been studied as templates for polyiodides. The results present a new strategy for polyiodide stabilization, which involves both N⋯I halogen bonding and cation–anion interactions. This is highlighted by the self-assembly of an unprecedented discrete pseudo-linear dodecaiodide species.

Motor skills of young adults with Asperger syndrome: A comparative study

Motor skill difficulties are mentioned as a common feature of Asperger syndrome (AS) but specific information regarding young adults is scarce. The purposes of this study were: to compare the motor skills of young adults with AS with age and gender matched controls using the updated version of the standardized Movement Assessment battery for children (M-ABC-II), and to compare the motor skills between younger and older participants within both groups (index and control group). The assembly of C-methyl resorcinarene into a tubular supramolecular solid-state structure, its thermal stability, and its hosting properties are reported. Careful control of the crystallisation conditions of C-methyl resorcinarene and 1,4-dimethyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (1,4-dimethyl DABCO) dibromide leads to a formation of two crystallographically different, but structurally very similar, solid-state nanotube structures. Hydrolysis of DCNP (a Tabun mimic) catalyzed by mesoporous silica nanoparticles

[EN] The hydrolysis of diethylcyanophosphonate, DCNP (a Tabun simulant) in the presence of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) has been studied in acetonitrile:water (99.5:0.5 v/v) mixtures using 31P NMR as a suitable technique to follow the DCNP hydrolysis. MSN alone was not capable to induce DCNP hydrolysis, yet MSN in combination with the presence of the bases potassium carbonate, triethylamine or DABCO enhanced DCNP degradation. When MSN was used combined with K2CO3, a hydrolysis of ca. 95% of the initial DCNP after 60 min was observed. Study of the natural cactus extracts protective effects on oxidative stress and inflammation related to peroxisomal β-oxidation deficiencies

The objective of my thesis work was to better understand the role of microglial cells in neuroinflammation initiated in several neurovegetative peroxisomal leukodystrophies and to explore the protective effects of substances from the cactus Opuntia ficus indica. To this end, we used as an in vitro model microglial cells deficient in ATP Binding Cassette D transporters (ABCD 1 and ABCD 2) or acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1). These are two BV-2 murine cell lines, deficient in Abcd1/Abcd2-/- or deficient in Acox1-/-, obtained elsewhere by gene editing using the CRISPR/Cas9 methodology.
