Abstract Purpose In this paper, the members of the Italian Working Group on Minimally-Invasive Treatments of the Thyroid (MITT group) aim to summarize the most relevant information that could be of help to referring physicians and that should be provided to patients when considering the use of MITT for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules. Exercising recommendations for paroxysmal AF in young and middle-aged athletes (PAFIYAMA) syndrome.

We have recently described a new syndrome: strenuous endurance exercise-related atrial fibrillation (AF) under the acronym of ‘paroxysmal AF in young and middle-aged athletes’ (‘PAFIYAMA’). Provided that other risk factors for AF and underlying conditions have been excluded (1), the diagnostic criteria for this syndrome entail a number of conditions, classified as major and minor. An enhanced risk of AF has been clearly documented in endurance athletes (top-class, elite and recreational) (2-5), and such risk typically ranges between 1.2- to 15-fold compared to the general, sedentary population (the better cardiovascular fitness, the higher incidence of AF) (6-11). Percutaneous high frequency coronary rotational ablation (PTCR) was used in 10 patients with significant coronary artery disease. PTCR removes arteriosclerotic material from the vessel wall. A diamond-coated (60-80 micron) brass burr-drill, fastened to a flexible drive shaft rotating and tracking along a central coaxial guide wire, was used. The turbine rotates the drive shaft in excess of 150,000-190,000 revolutions per minute. Oxide or carbide nanoparticles synthesized by laser ablation of a bulk Hf target in liquids and their structural, optical, and dielectric properties

International audience; Laser ablation of a bulk Hf target in deionized (DI) water, ethanol, or toluene was carried out for the production of nanoparticles' colloidal solutions. Due to the interaction of the ablation plasma plume species with the species which are produced by the liquid decomposition at the plume-liquid interface, hafnia (HfO2) nanoparticles are synthesized in DI water, hafnium carbide (HfC) nanoparticles in toluene, and a mixture of these in ethanol. The hafnia nanoparticles are in the monoclinic low temperature phase and in the tetragonal and fcc high temperature phases. Trace element data covering 96-7 ka BP from stalagmite CM (Santo Tomas Cave, Cuba)

We present a new speleothem trace element and stable isotope record, which extends previous paleoclimate evidence from Cuban speleothems to the last 96 ka. Stable isotope samples were micromilled at a resolution of 0.10-0.33mm, and measured using an IRMS equipped with a Gasbench. Line scans of Element/Calcium ratios of the speleothem were measured by laser ablation ICPMS and were reduced to the resolution of the stable isotope records.

Controlling the oxidation processes of Zn nanoparticles produced by pulsed laser ablation in aqueous solution

We used online UV-VIS optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra, acquired during and after pulsed laser ablation of a Zinc plate in aqueous solution, to investigate the effect of the laser repetition rate and liquid environment on the oxidation processes of the produced nanoparticles. A transient Zn/ZnO core-shell structure was revealed by the coexistence of an absorption peak around 5.0 eV due to Zn surface plasmon resonance and of an edge at 3.4 eV coming from wurtzite ZnO. The growth kinetics of ZnO at the various repetition rates, selectively probed by the excitonic emission at 3.3 eV, began immediately at the onset of laser ablation and was largely independent of the repetition …

Luminescence Efficiency of Si/SiO 2 Nanoparticles Produced by Laser Ablation

Photoluminescence properties of Si(core)/SiO 2 (shell) nanoparticles produced by pulsed laser ablation in aqueous solution are investigated with the purpose to highlight the microscopic processes that govern the emission brightness and stability. Time resolved spectra evidence that these systems emit a µs decaying band centered around 1.95 eV, that is associated with the radiative recombination of quantum-confined excitons generated in the Si nanocrystalline core. Both the quantum efficiency and the stability of this emission are strongly dependent on the pH level of the solution, that is changed after the laser ablation is performed. Oxidation of Zn nanoparticles probed by online optical spectroscopy during nanosecond pulsed laser ablation of a Zn plate in H2O

We report online UV-Visible absorption and photoluminescence measurements carried out during and after pulsed laser ablation of a zinc plate in water, which clarify the events leading to the generation of ZnO nanoparticles. A transient Zn/ZnO core-shell structure is revealed by the coexistence of the resonance absorption peak around 5.0 eV due to Zn surface plasmon resonance and the edge at 3.5 eV of ZnO. The growth kinetics of ZnO, selectively probed by the exciton luminescence at 3.3 eV, begins only after a ∼30 s delay from the onset of laser ablation. We also detect the luminescence at 2.3 eV of ZnO oxygen vacancies, yet rising with an even longer delay (∼100 s). These results show that …

Targets on superhydrophobic surfaces for laser ablation ion sources

Target preparation techniques for a laser ablation ion source at the Penning-trap mass spectrometer TRIGA-TRAP have been investigated with regard to future experiments with actinides. To be able to perform mass measurements on these nuclides considering their limited availability, an efficient target preparation technique is mandatory. Here, we report on a new approach for target production using backings, which are pretreated in a way that a superhydrophobic surface is formed.
