Hormonal and nutritional control of L‐carnitine uptake in myoblastic C2C12 cells

L-Carnitine plays an important role in skeletal muscle bioenergetics, and its bioavailability and thus its import may be crucial for muscle function. We studied the effect of thyroid hormone, insulin, and iron overload, hormones and nutrients known to alter muscle metabolism, on L-carnitine import into C2C12 cells. We report here L-carnitine uptake is increased by thyroid hormones and decreased by iron. Insulin was found to be ineffective in altering the L-carnitine uptake.

The effect of tacrine on acetylcholine overflow in the heart

Tacrine, 10(-6) M, enhanced the acetylcholine (ACh) overflow evoked in perfused chicken hearts by field stimulation (5 Hz, 1 min) from 183 to 346 pmol g-1 min-1. Increase to the same level were observed after pretreatment with diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) as well as after DFP plus 10(-6) M tacrine. Tacrine, 10(-5) M, caused further enhancement with or without DFP up to 851 pmol g-1 min-1. It was concluded that 10(-6) M tacrine enhanced the ACh overflow by choline esterase inhibition, whereas 10(-5) M tacrine caused, in addition, an increase of neuronal ACh release.

Studies on l-arginase in developing rat small intestine, brain, and kidney

The influences of hydrocortisone and thyroxine on the developmental changes of arginase activity in intestine, kidney, and brain of suckling rats were studied. A single injection of hydrocortisone (50 mg/kg) into rats aged 9 days evoked premature increase of jejunal arginase activity due to precocious formation of arginase A4. Arginase A4 can be detected about 48 hr after hydrocortisone injection, whereas in intact rats the enzyme appears in the intestinal mucosa on the 19th-21st days of postnatal life. Changes in Exercise Performance and Hormonal Concentrations Over a Big Ten Soccer Season in Starters and Nonstarters

As a consequence of the physiological demands experienced during a competitive soccer season, the antagonistic relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes can affect performance. Twenty-five male collegiate soccer players were studied throughout a season (11 weeks) to investigate the effects of long-term training and competition. Subjects were grouped as starters (S; n = 11) and nonstarters (NS; n = 14). Measures of physical performance, body composition, and hormonal concentrations (testosterone [T] and cortisol [C]) were assessed preseason (T1) and 5 times throughout the season (T2-T6). Abstract Psychological stress is associated with the pathogenesis of several neuropsychiatric disorders. In contrast, physical stress, as provoked by exercise, counteracts symptoms and potentially also disease progression. The kynurenine pathway, which is imbalanced in neuropsychiatric disorders, responds to both psychological and physical stress. The leptin or the OB protein has been linked to the reproductive function and inflammatory response. In the present study, we describe for the first time the expression of leptin and leptin receptor (long form) in the secretory endometrium and that endometrial leptin secretion is regulated in vitro by the human blastocyst.
