A method for the fast sequential extraction of toxic elements in contaminated soil samples using an ultrasonic water bath, followed by determination with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), was developed and compared with other methods introduced in the literature. Aims: To evaluate the accuracy of single-voxel Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) as a non-invasive diagnostic aid for pediatric brain tumours in a multi-national study. Our hypotheses are (1) that automated classification based on 1H-MRS provides an accurate non-invasive diagnosis in multi-centre datasets and (2) using a protocol which increases the metabolite information improves the diagnostic accuracy. The study was carried out using one ancient painting model made in a restoration laboratory and consolidated with the materials and dilutions most frequently used in the field of conservation. Abstract In this paper we focus on two sources of enhancement in accuracy and computational demanding in approximating a function and its derivatives by means of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. The approximating power of the standard method is perceived to be poor and improvements can be gained making use of the Taylor series expansion of the kernel approximation of the function and its derivatives.
