Effect of oral glutathione on hepatic glutathione levels in rats and mice

Administration of oral glutathione (GSH) increases hepatic GSH levels in fasted rats, in mice treated with GSH depletors such as diethyl maleate and in mice treated with high doses of paracetamol. An increase in hepatic GSH levels after administration of oral GSH does not occur in animals treated with buthionine sulphoximine, an inhibitor of GSH synthesis. Administration of oral GSH leads to an increase in the concentration of l-cysteine, a precursor of GSH, in portal blood plasma. Oral administration of l-methionine produced a significant decrease of hepatic ATP in fasted rats, but not in fed rats. Administration ofN−acetylcysteine or GSH did not affect the hepatic ATP levels. Paracetamol and antibiotics in childhood and subsequent development of wheezing/asthma: association or causation?

Background Several studies found an association between early administration of paracetamol and antibiotics and development of wheezing. This could be due to confounding: wheeze and asthmatic symptoms in early childhood are difficult to distinguish from respiratory tract infections that are widely treated with these drugs; in case of persistence of symptoms up to school age, this could explain the observed relationship. Early exposure to paracetamol or to antibiotics and eczema at school age: Modification by asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis

The association between early exposure to paracetamol or to antibiotics and eczema is conflicting. This study aims to know whether the early exposure to those drugs is associated with eczema at school age, and whether the strength of the association is modified by the presence of asthma or rhinoconjunctivitis. We report on a term neonate with closed ductus arteriosus, severe cardiomyopathy, right ventricular dysfunction, and functional stenosis of pulmonary arteries at birth after maternal self-medication with paracetamol and consumption of polyphenol-rich foods in late pregnancy. Die Glucuronidbildung nach peroraler Belastung mit Acetanilid bei chronischer Hepatitis und Lebercirrhose

Je 12 Patienten mit laparoskopisch und histologisch gesicherter chronischer Hepatitis und Lebercirrhose erhielten peroral 800 bzw. 1200 mg Acetanilid. Als Kontrolle dienten altersmasig entsprechende Lebergesunde. 2, 6 und 24 Std nach der Belastung wurden das freie und das an Glucuronsaure gebundene N-acetyl-p-aminophenol im Serum und im 24 Std-Urin bestimmt. Auserdem wurde versucht, freies, unverandertes Acetanilid nachzuweisen. Im Urin wurde ferner die Konzentration des total konjugierten N-acetyl-p-aminphenols gemessen.
