Preliminary study on analysis and removal of wax from a Carrara marble statue

2015

This preliminary study has mainly focused on the wax identification by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and removal. Wax is used for many purposes in the field of art as protective coatings on wooden, stone or metal objects. From the comparison of the spectra H NMR and in particular with the correspondence of the resonance peaks of the samples taken from the statue and beeswax and paraffin, we can conclude that the wax applied on the statue surface is beeswax. From our data, it can be concluded that, to remove the beeswax, from any stone support, the more effective solvent is the mixture of cyclohexane/ethyl acetate. The removal percentages ranged from 19 to 99%. Lower percentages of remova…

Polymorphism and solvates of flecainide base

2013

Flecainide base is pharmaceutically active substance used for production of flecainide acetate which is known in market as Tambacor, Almarytm, Apocard, Ecrinal or Flecaine. It is determined that flecainide base forms four polymorphic forms abbreviated as Ib, IIb, IIIb and IVb. Flecainide base form Ib is thermodynamically stable form at laboratory temperature while form IIIb is stable at higher temperatures. Flecainide form Ib absorbs water in its structure between layers and forms non-stoichiometric hydrate. Flecainide base binds with organic solvents and form monosolvates. Flecainide base form Ib crystallizes in orthorhombic crystals with lattice parameters a = 27.88 Å, b = 13.78 Å, c = 9.…

Influence of PVP/VA copolymer composition on drug–polymer solubility

2015

In this study, the influence of copolymer composition on drug-polymer solubility was investigated. The solubility of the model drug celecoxib (CCX) in various polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate (PVP/VA) copolymer compositions (70/30, 60/40, 50/50 and 30/70 w/w) and the pure homopolymers polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) was predicted at 25 °C using a thermal analysis method based on the recrystallization of a supersaturated amorphous dispersion (recrystallization method). These solubilities were compared with a prediction based on the solubility of CCX in the liquid monomeric precursors of PVP/VA, N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) and vinyl acetate (VA), using the Flory-Huggins …

Density, Speed of Sound, and Refractive Index of 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate with Acetone, Methyl Acetate, and Ethyl Acetat…

2009

Densities, speeds of sound, and refractive indices of the binary mixtures of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([emim][triflate]) with acetone, methyl acetate, and ethyl acetate were experimentally measured over the whole range of compositions at T = (278.15 to 328.15) K and a pressure of 0.1 MPa. From these experimental data, excess molar volumes, excess isentropic compressibilities, molar refractions, and deviations in refractive indices have been calculated and fitted to an extended version of the Redlich−Kister equation, which takes into account the dependence on composition and temperature simultaneously. The Prigogine−Flory−Patterson theory has been used to specula…

Endogenous role of epoxide-hydratase. Development of a steroid epoxide-hydratase assay and properties of the enzyme.

1979

A highly sensitive and rapid radiometric assay for the determination of specific epoxide hydratase activity with a steroid epoxide (16α, 17α-epoxy-1,3,5(10)-estratrien-3-ol, ‘estroxide’) has been developed. The unreacted substrate was separated from the product 1,3,5(10)-estratrien-3,16β,17α-triol by extraction into light petroleum. The product was then extracted into ethyl acetate and measured by scintillation spectrometry. Radiochromatography established that after subtraction of the blank the entire radioactivity measured in the ethyl acetate phase resulted from the product 1,3,5(10)-estratrien-3,16,17-triol, whilst high performance liquid chromatography with the four possible isomers of…

Characterisation of Diarylheptanoid- and Flavonoid-type Phenolics in Corylus avellana L. Leaves and Bark by HPLC/DAD-ESI/MS

2013

Introduction The leaves of Corylus avellana L. (common hazel, Betulaceae), a plant with a wide distribution in Europe, have been used in folk medicine for various diseases, but phytochemical exploration of C. avellana is still incomplete. To the best of our knowledge there is no previous report concerning diarylheptanoids in C. avellana, although these compounds show a frequent occurrence among Betulaceae plants. Objective To improve existing online chromatographic methods for the investigation of the phenolic compounds in C. avellana leaves and bark, focusing on diarylheptanoid-type molecules. Methods Dried and powdered leaves and bark of C. avellana were extracted with increasing polarity…

Efficacy of leukotriene receptor antagonist in chronic urticaria. A double-blind, placebo-controlled comparison of treatment with montelukast and cet…

2001

Background The cause and pathogenesis of chronic urticaria are still poorly understood. IgE-independent reactions, are common in adult patients with chronic urticaria, who have daily spontaneous occurrence of weals. H1-receptor antagonists (antihistamines) are the major class of therapeutic agents used in the management of urticaria and angioedema. Nevertheless, chronic urticaria is often difficult to treat and may not be controlled by antihistamines alone. It has been postulated that mediators other than histamine, such as kinins, prostaglandin and leukotrienes, may be responsible for some of the symptoms in urticaria which are not controlled by antihistamines. In this study, which was ran…

On the synthesis of functionalized porphyrins and porphyrin conjugates via β-aminoporphyrins

2016

International audience; The synthesis of functionalized porphyrins and their conjugates from meso-tetraarylporphyrins through the acylation and the oxidation of beta-aminoporphyrins was investigated. 2,3-Dioxochlorins were prepared by the oxidation of a variety of beta-aminoporphyrins and subsequently used in a condensation reaction with functionalized aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate to form beta-functionalized porphyrins bearing a fused imidazole ring. Under optimized experimental conditions both reactions tolerate various functional groups and afford the products in an appropriate overall yield. The mildness and usefulness of this methodology are illustrated by several examples in…

Start-Up of Chitosan-Assisted Anaerobic Sludge Bed Reactors Treating Light Oxygenated Solvents under Intermittent Operation

2021

Quality of the granular sludge developed during the start-up of anaerobic up-flow sludge bed reactors is of crucial importance to ensure the process feasibility of treating industrial wastewater such as those containing solvents. In this study, the microbial granule formation from suspended-growth biomass was investigated in two chitosan-assisted reactors. These reactors operated mimicking industrial sites working with night closures treating a mixture of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol. Each reactor operated under different hydrodynamic regimes typical from UASB (R1: &lt

Determination of water-soluble UV-filters in sunscreen sprays by liquid chromatography.

2002

Abstract Liquid chromatography was used for the determination of the three most used water-soluble UV filters, benzophenone-4 (BZ4), terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid (TDS), and phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid (PBS), in aqueous sunscreen sprays. A C 18 stationary phase and an isocratic mobile phase of EtOH–20 m M sodium acetate buffer of pH 4.6 (30:70, v/v) were used at a flow-rate of 0.5 ml min −1 . Mobile phase was also used as solvent for samples and standards. UV detection was at 313 nm. The analytical run took 5.5 min. The limits of detection were 0.5, 0.9 and 2 μg ml −1 for BZ4, TDS and PBS, respectively. The proposed method does not involve highly toxic solvents.
