Search for charged lepton flavor violation in narrow Y decays

2010

Charged-lepton flavor-violating processes are unobservable in the standard model, but they are predicted to be enhanced in several extensions to the standard model, including supersymmetry and models with leptoquarks or compositeness. We present a search for such processes in a sample of 99 × 10 6 Υ ( 2 S ) decays and 117 × 10 6 Υ ( 3 S ) decays collected with the BABAR detector. We place upper limits on the branching fractions B ( Υ ( n S ) → e ± τ ∓ ) and B ( Υ ( n S ) → μ ± τ ∓ ) ( n = 2 , 3 ) at the 10 − 6 level and use these results to place lower limits of order 1 TeV on the mass scale of charged-lepton flavor-violating effective operators.

Search for Production of Invisible Final States in Single-Photon Decays of Υ(1S)

We search for single-photon decays of the Upsilon(1S) resonance, Upsilon->gamma+invisible, where the invisible state is either a particle of definite mass, such as a light Higgs boson A0, or a pair of dark matter particles, chi chi-bar. Both A0 and chi are assumed to have zero spin. We tag Upsilon(1S) decays with a dipion transition Upsilon(2S)->pi+pi-Upsilon(1S) and look for events with a single energetic photon and significant missing energy. We find no evidence for such processes in the mass range m_A0<=9.2 GeV and m_chi<=4.5 GeV in the sample of 98e6 Upsilon(2S) decays collected with the BaBar detector and set stringent limits on new physics models that contain light dark ma…

Search for Low-Mass Dark-Sector Higgs Bosons

Lett; Recent astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have motivated the proposal of a dark sector with GeV-scale gauge boson force carriers and new Higgs bosons. We present a search for a dark Higgs boson using 516 fb-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector. We do not observe a significant signal and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the Standard Model-dark sector mixing angle and the dark sector coupling constant.

High Lymph Vessel Density and Expression of Lymphatic Growth Factors in Peritoneal Endometriosis

To investigate the occurrence of lymph vessels and lymphangiogenic growth factors in peritoneal lesions, we performed immunohistochemical staining of peritoneal lesions of 37 patients with antibodies against podoplanin (D2-40), lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1), prospero homeobox protein 1 (Prox-1), vascular epithelial growth factor (VEGF)-C/VEGF-D. Overall, 10 lesions were double stained against D2-40 and von Willebrand factor. The lymph vessel density in peritoneal lesion was significantly higher in comparison with healthy peritoneum. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the sub-Tg relaxations in amorphous ethyl cellulose: A relaxation magnitude study

Amorphous ethyl cellulose exhibits three secondary relaxations at temperatures below its glass transition. The fitted parameters that describe these processes and the comparison with other polysaccharides allow to ascribe the relaxations to lateral groups on one hand and to local main chain motion on the other hand. Their contributions to the dielectric constant overlap and induce a broad dielectric losses peak. The amplitude of one of these relaxations is found to decrease regularly with time. It is believed it comes from a gradual change of the polar groups chemical environment that constrains their motion.

Field-induced ordering phenomena and non-local elastic compliance in two-dimensional colloidal crystals

Ordering phenomena in colloidal dispersions exposed to external one-dimensional, periodic fields or under confinement are studied systematically by Monte Carlo computer simulations. Such systems are useful models for the study of monolayers on a substrate. We find that the interaction with a substrate potential completely changes the miscibility of a binary, hard disc mixture at low external field amplitudes. The underlying ordering mechanisms leading to this laser-induced de-mixing differ, depending on which components interact with the substrate potential. Complex high-pressure polymorphism of barium tungstate

We have studied BaWO 4 under compression at room temperature by means of x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. When compressed with neon as a pressure-transmitting medium (quasihydrostatic conditions), we found that BaWO 4 transforms from its low-pressure tetragonal structure into a much denser monoclinic structure. This result confirms our previous theoretical prediction based on ab initio calculations that the scheelite to BaWO 4-II transition occurs at room temperature if kinetic barriers are suppressed by pressure. Luminescence and absorption spectroscopy of Sn-related impurity centers in silica

We report an experimental study on the absorption and luminescence spectra of oxygen deficient point defects in Sn-doped silica. The absorption band at 4.9 eV (B2β band) and the two related photoluminescence bands at ∼4.2 eV (singlet-singlet emission, S1 → S0) and at ∼3.2 eV (triplet-singlet emission, T1 → S0), linked by a thermally activated T1 → S1 inter-system crossing process (ISC), are studied as a function of temperature from 300 to 20 K. Luminescence activity of surface and interior Ge-oxygen deficient centers in silica

We report a comparative study on the optical activity of surface and interior Ge–oxygen deficient centers in pressed porous and sol–gel Ge-doped silica, respectively. The experimental approach is based on the temperature dependence of the two photoluminescence bands at 4.2 (singlet–singlet emission, S1! S0) and 3.1 eV (triplet–singlet emission, T1! S0), excited within the absorption band at about 5 eV. Our data show that the phonon assisted intersystem crossing process, linking the two excited electronic states, more effective for surface than for interior centers in the temperature range 5–300 K. Magnetic field control of the spin Seebeck effect

The origin of the suppression of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect by applied magnetic fields is studied. We perform numerical simulations of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion for an atomistic spin model and calculate the magnon accumulation in linear temperature gradients for different strengths of applied magnetic fields and different length scales of the temperature gradient. We observe a decrease of the magnon accumulation with increasing magnetic field and we reveal that the origin of this effect is a field dependent change of the frequency distribution of the propagating magnons.
