After in vivo application of radiolabelled choline, radioactive ACh is formed and can be released from the brain by electrical stimulation. However, its origin is still obscure because, due to the metabolical heterogeneity of synaptic vesicles, no subcellular compartment has been found with a specific activity (SA) corresponding to that of released transmitter. To bypass this heterogeneity problem, two different labelled precursors can be used.

After using resistant cultivars or resistant rootstocks for many years to control soil-borne pathogenic fungi causing wilt disease, growers observe more and more frequently wilt like symptoms in their melon and eggplant cultures. Ctifl, in close collaboration with INRA, regional extension services, and seed companies, set up a study designed to investigate the causative pathological agents. The results show the prevalence of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis race 1-2 yellowing on melon and of Verticillium dahlia on eggplant. The Influence of Acetylcholine and Choline on the Incorporation of Phosphate into Phospholipids of Etiolated Bean Hypocotyl Hooks

Summary Acetylcholine influenced the radiolabelling of phospholipids in vivo in etiolated hypocotyl tissue of dwarf beans in darkness. Under aerobic conditions the specific activity of the phospholipids was decreased and under anaerobic conditions increased. The biosynthesis of phospholipids was strongly increased by the bivalent cations calcium and manganese and decreased by 2,4-dinitrophenol, anaerobiosis, atropine and ascorbic acid. Magnesium stimulated the uptake of the radioactive phosphate but not the specific activity of the phospholipids. The results are discussed in comparison with the «phospholipid-effect» of acetylcholine in animal tissues.

The impact of wood-derived biochar on the survival of Trichoderma spp. and growth of Secale cereale L. in sandy soil

The interrelations between biochar (BC) and soil microbiota remain unclear. Addressing this will be important for understanding how BC affects soil properties and plant growth. Here, we tested the influence of wood-derived BC with immobilised Trichoderma viride on rye Secale cereale L. in sandy soil. We found that the addition of BC leads to a significant (P 2+ and Mg2+, as well as a decrease in the concentration of Al3+, irrespective of BC particle size and the presence of T. viride. Sulfur-free pulping has an environmental advantage over the traditional kraft process. This article describes the combustion properties of the black liquors produced from silver birch (Betula pendula) sawdust using three different cooking processes: two sulfur-free cooks (soda-anthraquinone and oxygen-alkali), and one reference kraft cook. It also considers the corresponding black liquors from an integrated forest biorefinery, in which a hot-water pretreatment of feedstock was performed prior to pulping. Abstract. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of a experimental fire, used for grassland management, on soil organic carbon (SOC) reservoirs. The study was carried out on Hyparrhenia hirta (L.) Stapf (Hh) grassland and Ampelodesmos mauritanicus (Desf.) T. Durand and Schinz (Am) grasslands, located in the north of Sicily. Soil samples were collected at 0–5 cm before and after experimental fire and SOC was measured. During grassland fire soil surface temperature was monitored.
