Immunity and other defenses in pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum

2010

Background Recent genomic analyses of arthropod defense mechanisms suggest conservation of key elements underlying responses to pathogens, parasites and stresses. At the center of pathogen-induced immune responses are signaling pathways triggered by the recognition of fungal, bacterial and viral signatures. These pathways result in the production of response molecules, such as antimicrobial peptides and lysozymes, which degrade or destroy invaders. Using the recently sequenced genome of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), we conducted the first extensive annotation of the immune and stress gene repertoire of a hemipterous insect, which is phylogenetically distantly related to previously ch…

Predator encounters have spatially extensive impacts on parental behaviour in a breeding bird community.

2016

Predation risk has negative indirect effects on prey fitness, partly mediated through changes in behaviour. Evidence that individuals gather social information from other members of the population suggests that events in a community may impact the behaviour of distant individuals. However, spatially wide-ranging impacts on individual behaviour caused by a predator encounter elsewhere in a community have not been documented before. We investigated the effect of a predator encounter (hawk model presented at a focal nest) on the parental behaviour of pied flycatchers ( Ficedula hypoleuca ), both at the focal nest and at nearby nests different distances from the predator encounter. We show tha…

Asymmetrical interspecific communication of predatory threat in mixed-species colonies of lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) and jackdaws (Corvus moned…

2019

Sympatric species derive benefits by attending to information conveyed by heterospecifics. Our previous finding of reduced vigilance among jackdaws and lesser kestrels residing in mixed-species colonies suggested a reliance on interspecific communication of information regarding predatory threats. To test for interspecific communication of threat, we first determined whether jackdaw and lesser kestrel call structure varied with perceived threat. In this call production phase of our study, free-living birds in mixed-species colonies were presented with models representing a potential nest predator (European magpie) or with non-threatening stimuli (wood pigeon or wooden dowel) in proximity to…

The defensive secretion of Eurycotis floridana (Dictyoptera, Blattidae, Polyzosteriinae): chemical identification and evidence of an alarm function

1997

0965-1748 doi: DOI: 10.1016/S0965-1748(97)00033-7; The defensive secretion of the cockroach Eurycotis floridana was believed to contain only (E)-2-hexenal. However, we have shown it consists of 40 components, of which 30 were tentatively identified. (E)-2-Hexenal, (E)-2-hexenol and (E)-2-hexenoic acid represented approximately 98% of the organic phase. The other 2% included 10 aldehydes, 10 alcohols, four acids, two lactones and one ether. Four compounds are novel insect exudates: 3-ethoxyhexanal, 3-hydroxyhexanal, [(E)-1-pentenyl]-4-propyl-1,3-dioxane and 3-[(E)-2-hexenoxyl-hexanal. In addition to its well-known allomonal function, we have demonstrated that the defensive secretion also act…

In utero behavioral imprinting to predation risk in pups of the bank vole

2020

Abstract In the predator–prey arms race, survival-enhancing adaptive behaviors are essential. Prey can perceive predator presence directly from visual, auditory, or chemical cues. Non-lethal encounters with a predator may trigger prey to produce special body odors, alarm pheromones, informing conspecifics about predation risks. Recent studies suggest that parental exposure to predation risk during reproduction affects offspring behavior cross-generationally. We compared behaviors of bank vole (Myodes glareolus) pups produced by parents exposed to one of three treatments: predator scent from the least weasel (Mustela nivalis nivalis); scent from weasel-exposed voles, i.e., alarm pheromones;…

Bank vole alarm pheromone chemistry and effects in the field

2021

Chemical communication plays an important role in mammalian life history decisions. Animals send and receive information based on body odour secretions. Odour cues provide important social information on identity, kinship, sex, group membership or genetic quality. Recent findings show, that rodents alarm their conspecifics with danger-dependent body odours after encountering a predator. In this study, we aim to identify the chemistry of alarm pheromones (AP) in the bank vole, a common boreal rodent. Furthermore, the vole foraging efficiency under perceived fear was measured in a set of field experiments in large outdoor enclosures. During the analysis of bank vole odour by gas chromatograph…

Health Indicator for Low-Speed Axial Bearings Using Variational Autoencoders

2020

This paper proposes a method for calculating a health indicator (HI) for low-speed axial rolling element bearing (REB) health assessment by utilizing the latent representation obtained by variational inference using Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), trained on each speed reference in the dataset. Further, versatility is added by conditioning on the speed, extending the VAE to a conditional VAE (CVAE), thereby incorporating all speeds in a single model. Within the framework, the coefficients of autoregressive (AR) models are used as features. The dimensionality reduction inherent in the proposed method lowers the need of expert knowledge to design good condition indicators. Moreover, the sugg…

Lymphocyte Subsets and Inflammatory Cytokines of Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance and Multiple Myeloma

2019

Almost all multiple myeloma (MM) cases have been demonstrated to be linked to earlier monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Nevertheless, there are no identified characteristics in the diagnosis of MGUS that have been helpful in differentiating subjects whose cancer may progress to a malignant situation. Regarding malignancy, the role of lymphocyte subsets and cytokines at the beginning of neoplastic diseases is now incontestable. In this review, we have concentrated our attention on the equilibrium between the diverse lymphocyte subsets and the cytokine system and summarized the current state of knowledge, providing an overview of the condition of the entire system in …

Paediatric Emergencies During the COVID-19 Pandemic

2021

The state of alarm decreed by the Spanish Government, due to the Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, has demanded the lockdown of children and has conditioned a new organization of the Emergency Departments (ED). A pre-triage station and 2 independent circuits were established: suspected COVID-19 and not suspected COVID-19. The ED visits decreased 84,5% from pre-alarm with no increase in the level of urgencies. During the alarm state, 40.97% of the children were classified as suspected COVID-19. Fever and respiratory symptoms, used as discriminators, generated 2 groups of patients with different characteristics. Although the interruption of sports activities and isolation of childr…
