Successful management of a cerebral abscess secondary to chronic cholesteatoma caused by Prevotella melaninogenica and Peptococcus anaerobius – A cas…
2016
Abstract Cerebral abscess following cholesteatomatous otomastoiditis is a life-threatening complication and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a case of life-threatening cerebritis and cerebral abscess due to a collection of pus from an aerobic super infections occurring months after the apparent resolution of an otogenic brain abscess in a 67-year-old immunocompetent Italian female. Two gram-positive anaerobic pathogens were isolated during secondary neurosurgical procedures and antibiotic treatment was adopted to resolve the complications. Another objective of this study was to review the literature on gram-positive anaerobic pathogens and brain abscess complications i…
Management of Ponatinib in Patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia with Cardiovascular Risk Factors
2019
Cardiovascular (CV) adverse events are considered common complications of ponatinib treatment. Recently, it has been demonstrated that ponatinib dose reductions in definite settings can obtain optimal responses and lower ponatinib-related CV events. In this study, we describe the management of 5 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia treated with ponatinib, from second to fourth line of tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy, carrying high pre-ponatinib CV risk, who obtained optimal molecular response and developed no CV adverse event during follow-up. Among these 5 patients, 2 had diagnosis of ischemic heart disease and underwent percutaneous angioplasty, 2 had type 2 diabetes and arterial hype…
Higher resource level promotes virulence in an environmentally transmitted bacterial fish pathogen
2017
Diseases have become a primary constraint to sustainable aquaculture, but remarkably little attention has been paid to a broad class of pathogens: the opportunists. Opportunists often persist in the environment outside the host, and their pathogenic features are influenced by changes in the environment. To test how environmental nutrient levels influence virulence, we used strains of Flavobacterium columnare, an environmentally transmitted fish pathogen, to infect rainbow trout and zebra fish in two different nutrient concentrations. To separate the effects of dose and nutrients, we used three infective doses and studied the growth of bacteria in vitro. High nutrient concentration promoted …
Oral paracoccidioidomycosis in a non-endemic region from Brazil: A short case series.
2019
Background Although the paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is endemic in Brazil, the occurrence in most states from the North and Northeastern Brazil is very unusual. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of a case series of oral PCM in a non-endemic region from Brazil (Northeastern region), discussing the clinical and histopathological differential diagnoses of the oral manifestations of the disease. Material and methods Between 2000 and 2017, all cases of oral PCM were retrieved from the Oral Pathology Laboratory, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, located at Northeastern Brazil. Clinical data, such as age, gender, origin, occupation, site, symptoms, time of comp…
AFM study of interaction forces in supported planar DPPC bilayers in the presence of general anesthetic halothane
2006
International audience; In spite of numerous investigations, the molecular mechanism of general anesthetics action is still not well understood. It has been shown that the anesthetic potency is related to the ability of an anesthetic to partition into the membrane. We have investigated changes in structure, dynamics and forces of interaction in supported dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers in the presence of the general anesthetic halothane. In the present study, we measured the forces of interaction between the probe and the bilayer using an atomic force microscope. The changes in force curves as a function of anesthetic incorporation were analyzed. Force measurements were in go…

Pyrazolo[3,4-d][1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine: a new ring system through Dimroth rearrangement
2008
Abstract Derivatives of the new ring system pyrazolo[3,4- d ][1,2,3]triazolo[1,5- a ]pyrimidine were synthesized from the corresponding angular isomers, through a Dimroth rearrangement, in quantitative yields. Preliminary computational studies demonstrated that this class of compounds could be a good candidate as DNA intercalating agents.
Lamotrigine use in pregnancy and risk of orofacial cleft and other congenital anomalies
2016
Objective: To test previous signals of a risk of orofacial cleft (OC) and clubfoot with exposure to the antiepileptic lamotrigine, and to investigate risk of other congenital anomalies (CA).Methods: This was a population-based case–malformed control study based on 21 EUROCAT CA registries covering 10.1 million births (1995–2011), including births to 2005 in which the clubfoot signal was generated and a subsequent independent study population of 6.3 million births. A total of 226,806 babies with CA included livebirths, stillbirths, and terminations of pregnancy following prenatal diagnosis. First-trimester lamotrigine monotherapy exposure in OC cases and clubfoot cases was compared to other …
The Fate of Bacteriophages in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS)—Towards Developing Phage Therapy for RAS
2019
Aquaculture production has increased tremendously during the last decades, and new techniques have been developed, e.g., recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). In RAS, the majority of water volume is circulated via mechanical and biological filters and reused in the tanks. However, the prevention and treatment of diseases in these systems are challenging, as the pathogens spread throughout the system, and the addition of chemicals and antibiotics disrupts the microbiome of the biofilters. The increasing antibiotic resistance has made phage therapy a relevant alternative for antibiotics in food production. Indeed, as host-specific and self-replicating agent they might be optimal for target…
Katsaus Suomen varhaiseen atomihistoriaan
2022
Kirjan tarkoituksena on antaa lisävalaistusta suomalaisen ydinteknologian …
