Teachers’ responses to children in emotional distress: A study of co-regulation in the first year of primary school in Norway
2020
The purpose of this study was to explore how first-grade teachers respond to pupils in emotional distress within the framework of co-regulation. Co-regulation in this context refers to an adult–chi...
Helping children in bullying situations: The role of intersubjective understanding and co-regulation
2020
Contemporary definitions of bullying are strikingly in agreement that bullying represents aggressive behaviour involving premeditation, time span, power imbalance and clear role assignment. Even though useful in some situations, these premises are not as helpful if the aim is to improve the social environment in educational contexts. The aim of the present article is to argue that educators need alternative theoretical tools when attempting to improve relations between children. We argue that interpretations of bullying in educational contexts are not ‘owned’ by any specific party, but rather involve (1) intersubjective negotiation and (2) the co-regulative competence of educators and child…

Flernivåstaten og krisehåndtering: En kommentar
2022
2022
Citizen Coherence and Cultivated Cleanliness: Using Technology-Induced Social Norms to Strengthen Sustainable Household Bonds
2022
Social identity and social capital are critical to human well-being and sustainable development. However, existing research on sustainable behavior typically treats these factors merely as taken-for-granted preconditions to environmental protection. This paper argues that they can also be direct outcomes of environment-oriented efforts, thus becoming drivers of sustainable societies. As part of a larger research project on household recycling and waste behavior, the authors assess and compare perceived social identity and social capital of residents in a multi-family residential dwelling in Sweden before (N = 66) and after (N = 18) exposure to a social norm-based intervention delivered thro…
What is it about humanity that we can't give away to intelligent machines? A European perspective
2021
Abstract One of the most significant recent technological developments concerns the development and implementation of ‘intelligent machines’ that draw on recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. However, there are growing tensions between human freedoms and machine controls. This article reports the findings of a workshop that investigated the application of the principles of human freedom throughout intelligent machine development and use. Forty IS researchers from ten different countries discussed four contemporary AI and humanity issues and the most relevant IS domain challenges. This article summarizes their experiences and opinions regarding four AI and humanity th…
Familiarity with digital twin totality: Exploring the relation and perception of affordances through a Heideggerian perspective
2022
The concept of affordances has become central in information systems literature. However, existing perspectives fall short in providing details on the relational aspect of affordances, which can influence actors' perception of them. To increase granularity and specificity in this regard, researchers have suggested that it be supplemented with other concepts or theories. In this article, we argue that the Heideggerian concepts of ‘familiarity’ and ‘referential totality’ are well suited for increasing our understanding of the relational aspects of affordances in information systems research. To explore this idea, we conducted a case study of a project concerning the development of a digital t…
Support vector machines in engineering: an overview
2014
This paper provides an overview of the support vector machine SVM methodology and its applicability to real-world engineering problems. Specifically, the aim of this study is to review the current state of the SVM technique, and to show some of its latest successful results in real-world problems present in different engineering fields. The paper starts by reviewing the main basic concepts of SVMs and kernel methods. Kernel theory, SVMs, support vector regression SVR, and SVM in signal processing and hybridization of SVMs with meta-heuristics are fully described in the first part of this paper. The adoption of SVMs in engineering is nowadays a fact. As we illustrate in this paper, SVMs can …
The Effects of Banning Smartphone Use During Lectures in High Schools : An explanatory case study
2021
Master's thesis in Information systems (IS501) Research context–During the last decade, smartphonehas become an integral part of our lives. It is undeniable that the smartphone has impacted almost every aspect of our lives, and education is no exception. Banning smartphone use is one of the measures that has been implemented in high school to manage excessive smartphone use among students. Developing an appropriate policy to manage smartphone use during lectures can be a difficult task, because it can have a positive impact on their attention and academic performance, while also having a negative impact on their behavior and mentality. Purpose-This study addresses the issue regarding smartp…
