Inflation, quantum fields, and CMB anisotropies
2009
Revert field Inflationary cosmology has proved to be the most successful at predicting the properties of the anisotropies observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this essay we show that quantum field renormalization significantly influences the generation of primordial perturbations and hence the expected measurable imprint of cosmological inflation on the CMB. However, the new predictions remain in agreement with observation, and in fact favor the simplest forms of inflation. In the near future, observations of the influence of gravitational waves from the early universe on the CMB will test our new predictions.

Regional study of herbicide resistance of Alopecurus myosuroides Huds. in France
2006
International audience; Since the 1990s in the north-west of Europe, the spread of herbicide resistance in wheat weeds such as Alopecurus myosuroides Huds. (blackgrass) is becoming more and more important. In the French administrative district Côte d’Or resistance to fenoxaprop within A. myosuroides populations was first detected in 1996. In 2003, 149 fields from this district were randomly sampled and about 125 A. myosuroides populations were tested for herbicide resistance. The agronomic history of all sites was investigated. Most the populations of A. myosuroides investigated contained at least 50 % of plants with resistance to fenoxaprop. In 53 and 9 % of these populations at least 50 %…
L-citrulline ameliorates pathophysiology in a rat model of superimposed preeclampsia
2021
AbstractPreeclampsia, characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and fetal growth restriction, is one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal mortality. By far, there is no effective pharmacological therapy for preeclampsia. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of L-citrulline supplementation in Dahl salt-sensitive rat, a model of superimposed preeclampsia. Parental DSSR were treated with L-citrulline (2.5 g/L in drinking water) from the day of mating to the end of lactation period. Blood pressure of the rats was monitored throughout pregnancy and markers of preeclampsia were assessed. Endothelial function of the pregnant DSSR was assessed by wire myograph. L-…
A Highly Magnetized Twin-Jet Base Pinpoints a Supermassive Black Hole
2016
Supermassive black holes (SMBH) are essential for the production of jets in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Theoretical models based on Blandford & Znajek extract the rotational energy from a Kerr black hole, which could be the case for NGC1052, to launch these jets. This requires magnetic fields of the order of $10^3\,$G to $10^4\,$G. We imaged the vicinity of the SMBH of the AGN NGC1052 with the Global Millimetre VLBI Array and found a bright and compact central feature, smaller than 1.9 light days (100 Schwarzschild radii) in radius. Interpreting this as a blend of the unresolved jet bases, we derive the magnetic field at 1 Schwarzschild radius to lie between 200 G and ~8000…
ETAT TOPOLOGIQUE DE L'ESPACE TEMPS A L'ECHELLE 0
2002
We propose in this research a new solution regarding the existence and the content of the initial spacetime singularity. In the context of topological field theory we consider that the initial singularity of space-time corresponds to a zero size singular gravitational instanton characterized by a Riemannian metric configuration (++++) in dimension D = 4. Connected with some unexpected topological data corresponding to the zero scale of space-time, the initial singularity is thus not considered in terms of divergences of physical fields but can be resolved in the frame of topological field theory. We get this result from the physical observation that the pre-spacetime is in a thermal equilib…
Perceived determinants of physical activity among women with prior severe preeclampsia: a qualitative assessment.
2022
Abstract Background The objective of this study was to (1) qualitatively identify the perceived determinants of physical activity among women who have experienced severe preeclampsia, and (2) examine whether these determinants are consistent with the overarching processes outlined in the integrated behavior change (IBC) model, a novel model that describes physical activity as being a result of motivational, volitional, and automatic processes. Methods Patients (n = 35) of the Follow-Up PreEClampsia (FUPEC) Outpatient Clinic, Erasmus MC, the Netherlands, participated in an anonymous online survey. The main outcomes under study were their perceived determinants of physical activity. Responses…

The Nuremberg Trial in the Finnish Press Discourse
2011
The opening of the Nuremberg Trial was widely reported in Finland, as in other countries examined here. Like the reportage from the liberated concentration camps, the Finnish press was not represented on the spot although it had a quota for one journalist. However, the trial was a much-awaited event in Finland. The Belsen Trial (the trial of Josef Kramer and 44 others), which had ended on 17 November 1945, was duly reported in Finland, and in part indicated that the interest in Nazi criminality was running high.1
Information encoding of a qubit into a multilevel environment
2010
I consider the interaction of a small quantum system (a qubit) with a structured environment consisting of many levels. The qubit will experience a decoherence process, which implies that part of its initial information will be encoded into correlations between system and environment. I investigate how this information is distributed on a given subset of levels as a function of its size, using the mutual information between both entities, in the spirit of the partial-information plots studied by Zurek and co-workers. In this case we can observe some differences, which arise from the fact that I am partitioning just one quantum system and not a collection of them. However, some similar featu…
