The aim of the study was to compare arterial and venous flow volume in the punctured leg in patients given a conventional pressure dressing and those given a new hemostatic puncture closure device (Angio-Seal) after cardiac catheterization. We prospectively measured blood flow in 25 patients with pressure dressing (group A) and 25 patients with Angio-Seal (group B) after cardiac catheterization. In spite of the improved antibiotic treatment of brain abscess, the mortality remains high, between 30% and 40% (2,3). With the help of effective antibiotic treatment it is possible to bring the inflammatory Part of the lesion under control, but not the space-occupying element which is determined by the inflammatory brain edema. Any improvement in the results will therefore have to wait until an effective antiedematous treatment has also been developed. The aim of our previously described investigations on experimental brain abscess in cats (3) was to demonstrate that only the additional treatment with steroids as well as the antibiotics results in an improvement in the final outcome.

Abstract Pretreatment with zinc acexamate (25–100 mg kg−1 i.p.) inhibited acid and pepsinogen secretion in the pylorus-ligated rat. Zinc acexamate (5–50 mg kg−1 p.o.) also inhibited the increases in acid secretion induced by carbachol (10 μg kg−1) and 2-deoxy-D-glucose (200 mg kg−1) in the perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. A delayed antisecretory effect was observed with this drug on histamine induced responses. High concentrations of zinc acexamate (10−5-10−2 M) did not modify the in-vitro activity of pepsin. We investigated the electrophysiological actions of dofetilide upon the ventricular myocardium to determine whether the drug modifies the inhibitory effects of subthreshold stimuli trains upon ventricular refractoriness. In sleep-related breathing disorders, sleep apnea is a clinical symptom that can be categorized as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or mixed apnea by analysis using poly-somnography. Publisher Summary This chapter describes the tissue oxygenation and tissue metabolism in the brain cortex during pronounced arterial hypocapnia. Acute arterial hypocapnia induced by hyperventilation leads to typical reactions in the circulation and the metabolism of the brain tissue. With a lowering of arterial CO2 tension, the cerebro-vascular resistance (CVR) increases resulting in a decrease of cerebral blood flow. The changes in CVR are a consequence of decreasing hydrogen ion and potassium ion concentrations in the perivascular space of the brain arterioles.
