Preventive Analgesia with Pregabalin in Neuropathic Pain from “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome”: Assessment of Sleep Quality and Disability

Objective. Pregabalin group (PGB) is an antiepileptic used to treat neuropathic pain. We evaluated analgesic efficacy and safety for postoperative/chronic pain, disability, and sleep quality in patients who underwent spine surgery administered with PGB, or not, during the presurgical and postsurgical periods. Design. Retrospective cohort study of 60 patients (two groups with 30 patients) with full information on 50 (29 with PGB and 21 without PGB). Ten patients were dismissed as information was lacking. Blood Volume Substitutes in Emergency Care

Volume substitutes for restoring circulating blood volume are eminently important for emergency care. In addition to side effects, the intravascular volume effect immediately after infusion and the duration of this volume effect are determining factors for the selection of volume replacement solutions available on the market today. Therefore, we controlled the intravascular volume effect of 16 test solutions, immediately as well as 90 and 240 min after the end of infusion.

Effects of strength and endurance training on thigh and leg muscle mass and composition in elderly women

The effects of 18 wk of intensive strength and endurance training on knee extensor, knee flexor, and lower leg muscle mass and composition were studied in 76- to 78-yr-old women. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), lean tissue CSA, and relative proportion of fat were determined using computed tomography. The strength-trained women increased their total muscle lean tissue CSA of the thigh (1.5%; P = 0.035), quadriceps CSA (4.5%; P = 0.021), quadriceps lean tissue CSA (5.8%, P = 0.009), and mean Hounsfield unit of the lower leg muscles (11.2%; P = 0.035) compared with the changes that occurred in the control group during the experiment. Effects of nicotine on motor activity, passive avoidance and plus-maze behavior in aged NMRI and C57BL mice

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of nicotine (0.35 and 0.175 mg/kg) on locomotor activity, passive avoidance and plus maze behavior in aged mice of two strains (C57BL and NMRI). In a first experiment, aged mice of these strains were injected with nicotine or saline and immediately afterwards were put on the actimeter. Results showed that nicotine significantly decreased locomotor activity in C57 mice. In a second experiment, nicotine was administered before training and retention sessions of a passive avoidance task. Background: Halogenated volatile anesthetics (HVAs) are considered to be inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). On other hand, NO mediates the vasodilation produced by HVAs. Thus, both increase and decrease of NO concentration in brain tissues are possible during anesthesia. A patient with severe organophosphate intoxication received Neostigmine 1 mg IV during the intermediate syndrome. This dose resulted clinically and neurophysiologically in a marked deterioration of neuro-muscular transmission. This effect of neostigmine on the neuromuscular block during the intermediate syndrome (deterioration) differs from its effect on a similar pattern (improvement), which is seen in the delayed neuropathy following organophosphate exposure. The administration of therapeutic doses of cholinesterase inhibitors in patients with a reduced safety margin due to inhibition of endplate acetylcholinesterase may be dangerous.

Temporal Profile of Gene Induction After Venous Ischemia and Effects of Spreading Depression

Occlusion of two adjacent cortical veins is followed by a widespread reduction of rCBF and the occurrence of small infarcts, which become larger if spreading depression (SD) occurs. The infarct matures over time with TUNEL-positive cells seen in the penumbra up to 4 days after vein occlusion. Caspase inhibition with zVAD.fmk reduces infarct size. Here, the time course of gene expression in the penumbra is compared to that induced by SD alone.

Transfusion-related acute lung injury after intravenous immunoglobulin treatment in a lung transplant recipient

Three weeks after single-lung transplantation for pulmonary fibrosis, a patient with high serum levels of de novo donor-specific antibodies received high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) infusion (scheduled dose: 2 g/kg on 2 days) to prevent antibody-mediated rejection. Within the first hours after completion of infusions, he experienced acute lung injury involving the transplanted lung.
