An asymmetric electrospun membrane for the controlled release of ciprofloxacin and FGF-2: Evaluation of antimicrobial and chemoattractant properties.
2021
Here, an asymmetric double-layer membrane has been designed and fabricated by electrospinning as a tool for a potential wound healing application. A hydrophobic layer has been produced by using a polyurethane-polycaprolactone (PU-PCL) copolymer and loaded with the antibacterial ciprofloxacin whereas an ion responsive hydrophilic layer has been produced by using an octyl derivative of gellan gum (GG-C8) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and loaded with the growth factor FGF-2. This study investigated how the properties of this asymmetric membrane loaded with actives, were influenced by the ionotropic crosslinking of the hydrophilic layer. In particular, the treatment in DPBS and the crosslinking i…
New linezolid-like 1,2,4-oxadiazoles active against Gram-positive multiresistant pathogens
2013
The synthesis and the in vitro antibacterial activity of novel linezolid-like oxadiazoles are reported. Replacement of the linezolid morpholine C-ring with 1,2,4-oxadiazole results in an antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant comparable or even superior to that of linezolid. While acetamidomethyl or thioacetoamidomethyl moieties in the C(5) side-chain are required, fluorination of the phenyl B ring exhibits a slight effect on an antibacterial activity but its presence seems to reduce the compounds cytotoxicity. Molecular modeling performed using two different approaches - FLAP and Amber software - shows that in the binding…
Synthesis, characterization, crystal structures and in vitro antistaphylococcal activity of organotin(IV) derivatives with 5,7-disubstituted-1,2,4-tr…
2011
Abstract New organotin(IV) complexes of 5,7-ditertbutyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine ( dbtp ) and 5,7-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine ( dptp ) with 1:1 and/or 1:2 stoichiometry were synthesized and investigated by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and 119 Sn Mossbauer in the solid state and by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, in solution. Moreover, the crystal and molecular structures of Et 2 SnCl 2 (dbtp) 2 and Ph 2 SnCl 2 (EtOH) 2 (dptp) 2 are reported. The complexes contain hexacoordinated tin atoms: in Et 2 SnCl 2 (dbtp) 2 two 5,7-ditertbutyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine molecules coordinate classically the tin atom through N(3) atom and the coordination around the tin atom shows a …
Flexible mats as promising antimicrobial systems via integration of Thymus capitatus (L.) essential oil into PLA
2020
Aim: To develop electrospun mats loaded with Thymus capitatus (L.) essential oil ( ThymEO) and to study their morpho-mechanical and antimicrobial properties. Materials & methods: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) mats containing ThymEO were prepared by electrospinning. The effect of ThymEO on the morpho-mechanical properties of fibers was assayed by scanning electron microscopy and dynamometer measurements. The antimicrobial activity of ThymEO delivered either in liquid or vapor phase was assessed through killing curves and invert Petri dishes method. The cytotoxicity was also investigated. Results: The mechanical properties were enhanced by integrating ThymEO into PLA. Both liquid and vapors of…

Synthesis, characterization, and in vitro antimicrobial activity of organotin(IV) complexes with triazolo-pyrimidine ligands containing exocyclic oxy…
2005
Abstract Tri-organotin(IV) complexes of the triazolo-pyrimidine derivatives 4,5-dihydro-5-oxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5 a ]pyrimidine (5HtpO), 4,7-dihydro-5-methyl-7-oxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5 a ]pyrimidine (HmtpO), and 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-5,7-dioxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5 a ]pyrimidine (H 2 tpO 2 ), and the diorganotin derivative n -Bu 2 Sn(tpO 2 ), were synthesized and characterized by means of infrared and 119 Sn Mossbauer spectroscopy. In all the complexes obtained the triazolopyrimidines act as multidentate ligands producing polymeric structures. A trigonal bipyramidal arrangement of the ligands around the tin atom is proposed for triorganotin(IV) derivatives, with organic groups on the equatoria…
Analytical procedure elaboration of total flavonoid content determination and antimicrobial activity of bee bread extracts
2019
Sixteen ethanolic extracts were obtained from seven different bee bread samples. The total flavonoid content in the extracts was determined by aluminium-chloride method and was in the range of 8.3 mg/L ± 6.24% to 195.3 mg/L ± 1.35% and 28.8 mg/L ± 19.33% to 603.3 mg/L ± 4.64% with reference to quercetin and rutin, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD) for parallel measurements for the calibration curves of quercetin dehydrate and rutin trihydrate were in the range of 0.51% to 9.39% and 5.02% to 19.91%, respectively. The RSD for parallel measurements for the extracts with reference to quercetin dihydrate and rutin trihydrate were in the range of 0.23% to 11.64% and 4.64% to 19…
Chemical Composition Analysis, Antimicrobial Activity and Cytotoxicity Screening of Moss Extracts (Moss Phytochemistry)
2015
Mosses have been neglected as a study subject for a long time. Recent research shows that mosses contain remarkable and unique substances with high biological activity. The aim of this study, accordingly, was to analyze the composition of mosses and to screen their antimicrobial and anticancer activity. The total concentration of polyphenols and carbohydrates, the amount of dry residue and the radical scavenging activity were determined for a preliminary evaluation of the chemical composition of moss extracts. In order to analyze and identify the substances present in mosses, two types of extrahents (chloroform, ethanol) and the GC/MS and LC-TOF-MS methods were used. The antimicrobial activ…
PLANT PRODUCTS TO CONTROL BIODETERIORATION OF CULTURAL ASSETS
2017
Fungi and bacteria are known as major biodeteriogens of cultural heritage, able to colonize, altering anddegrading a wide range of materials, such as metals, paints, paper, paperboard, rocks, photos, textiles, leather, plastics, etc. (1, 2). The use of traditional chemical biocides, to control microbial growth on cultural assets, has become a serious threat to public health and environment. The aim of this study has been to develop biocompatible antimicrobial compounds testing on specific taxa, that were isolated from biodeteriorated artifacts (books, papers, stones, woods, canvases) or environmental aerosols (museums, archives, libraries) and characterized by microscopy, in vitro culture a…
Poly(lactic acid)/carvacrol-based materials: preparation, physicochemical properties, and antimicrobial activity
2020
The current demand for new antimicrobial systems has stimulated research for the development of poly(lactic acid)/carvacrol (PLA/CAR)-based materials able to hinder the growth and spread of microorganisms. The eco-friendly characteristics of PLA and cytocompatibility make it very promising in the perspective of green chemistry applications as material for food and biomedical employments. The broad-spectrum biological and pharmacological properties of CAR, including antimicrobial activity, make it an interesting bioactive molecule that can be easily compounded with PLA by adopting the same techniques as those commonly used for PLA manufacturing. This review critically discusses the most comm…
