Italian multicentric survey on laparoscopic spleen surgery in the pediatric population.
2007
Abstract Background: Some technical aspects of laparoscopic spleen surgery still are debated, although efforts have been made to standardize them. The position of the patient, the approach to the spleen, vessel identification and division, and spleen extraction can vary from center to center. Methods: This retrospective muticentric study led by the Societa` Italiana di Videochirurgia Infantile (SIVI) examined indications, surgical details, and complications of laparoscopic spleen surgery in the pediatric population during a 5-year period. Results: The study period from January 1999 to December 2003 (5 years) involved nine centers and included 85 patients with a mean age of 10 years (range, …
High-intensity transient signals during laparoscopic surgery in children.
2009
Background Laparoscopic interventions in children gain increasing popularity. Pneumoperitoneum as applied during laparoscopic surgery can induce gas emboli formation, but it is unclear whether this is associated with cerebral embolic events. To investigate the hypothesis that pneumoperitoneum causes cerebral emboli in children, the number and intensity of high-intensity transient signals (HITS) detected using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography were assessed before and after induction of pneumoperitoneum. Methods Twenty children were monitored during laparoscopic surgery. General anaesthesia was performed using sevoflurane and sufentanil or alfentanil. Pressure-controlled ventilation was a…
Data from: Plant – herbivorous beetle networks: molecular characterization of trophic ecology within a threatened steppic environment
2015
DNA barcoding facilitates many evolutionary and ecological studies, including the examination of the dietary diversity of herbivores. In this study, we present a survey of ecological associations between herbivorous beetles and host plants from seriously threatened European steppic grasslands. We determined host plants for the majority (65%) of steppic leaf beetles (55 species) and weevils (59) known from central Europe using two barcodes (trnL and rbcL) and two sequencing strategies (Sanger for mono/oligophagous species and Illumina for polyphagous taxa). To better understand the ecological associations between steppic beetles and their host plants, we tested the hypothesis that leaf beetl…
Opettajaopiskelijoiden arvot liikunnanopetuksessa
2011
Kangas, T. & Kyllönen, J. 2011. Opettajaopiskelijoiden arvot liikunnanopetuk-sessa. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Opettajankoulutuslaitos. Kasvatustieteen pro gradu -tutkielma, 90 sivua. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin opettajaopiskelijoiden liikunnanopetukseen liittämiä arvoja ja yleisiä elämänarvoja. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin liikunnanopetuksen arvojen yhteyksiä taustamuuttujiin, joita olivat sukupuoli, koulutusohjelma, sivuainesuuntautuneisuus, työkokemus koulusta, aiempi ammatillinen koulutus ja ikä. Tutkimukseen osallistui 78 kasvatustieteen perusopintojen kurssille osallistuvaa opettajaopiskelijaa, jotka olivat Jyväskylän yliopiston ensimmäisen vuoden luokanopettajaopiskelijoita ja erityispedagogiikan…
Intraoperative ventilator settings and their association with postoperative pulmonary complications in neurosurgical patients: Post-hoc analysis of L…
2020
Abstract Background Limited information is available regarding intraoperative ventilator settings and the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures. The aim of this post-hoc analysis of the ‘Multicentre Local ASsessment of VEntilatory management during General Anaesthesia for Surgery’ (LAS VEGAS) study was to examine the ventilator settings of patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures, and to explore the association between perioperative variables and the development of PPCs in neurosurgical patients. Methods Post-hoc analysis of LAS VEGAS study, restricted to patients undergoing neurosurgery. Patients were stratified into g…
Effect of Intraoperative High Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) with Recruitment Maneuvers vs Low PEEP on Postoperative Pulmonary Complications…
2019
Importance: An intraoperative higher level of positive end-expiratory positive pressure (PEEP) with alveolar recruitment maneuvers improves respiratory function in obese patients undergoing surgery, but the effect on clinical outcomes is uncertain. Objective: To determine whether a higher level of PEEP with alveolar recruitment maneuvers decreases postoperative pulmonary complications in obese patients undergoing surgery compared with a lower level of PEEP. Design, Setting, and Participants: Randomized clinical trial of 2013 adults with body mass indices of 35 or greater and substantial risk for postoperative pulmonary complications who were undergoing noncardiac, nonneurological surgery un…

Anterograde tracing of retinal afferents to the tree shrew hypothalamus and raphe
2000
The anterograde neuronal transport of Cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) was used in this study to label the termination of retinal afferents in the hypothalamus of the tree shrew Tupaia belangeri. Upon pressure-injection of the substance into the vitreous body of one eye, a major projection of the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) was found to the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Although the innervation pattern was bilateral, the ipsilateral SCN received a somewhat stronger projection. Labeling was also found in the supraoptic nucleus and its perinuclear zone, respectively, mainly ipsilaterally as well as in the bilateral para- and periventricular hypothalamic regions without lateral pr…
Absolok® versus Hem-o-Lok® clips for renorrhaphy during partial nephrectomy for parenchymal renal tumors
2020
Background To compare perioperative and functional outcomes associated with renorrhaphy performed with two different types of clips (Absolok® vs. Hem-o-Lok®) in a contemporary series of patients who underwent partial nephrectomy. Methods Patients in whom Absolok® clips were used to perform haemostasis at the level of tumor bed or to block the running sutures during sliding-clip renorrhaphy (study group) were compared with a contemporary control group of patients in whom renorrhaphy was performed with Hem-o-Lok® clips. Both groups received the same surgical technique via an open or robot-assisted approach. Inner renorrhaphy was performed with one or more 3-0 (26 mm needle) monofilament runni…
Virtual temporal bone: an interactive 3-dimensional learning aid for cranial base surgery.
2009
OBJECTIVE: We have developed an interactive virtual model of the temporal bone for the training and teaching of cranial base surgery. METHODS: The virtual model was based on the tomographic data of the Visible Human Project. The male Visible Human's computed tomographic data were volumetrically reconstructed as virtual bone tissue, and the individual photographic slices provided the basis for segmentation of the middle and inner ear structures, cranial nerves, vessels, and brainstem. These structures were created by using outlining and tube editing tools, allowing structural modeling either directly on the basis of the photographic data or according to information from textbooks and cadaver…
