Clinical indications for cardiac computed tomography. From the Working Group of the Cardiac Radiology Section of the Italian Society of Medical Radio…

2012

Discriminant analysis in diagnosing carcinoma of the pancreas and of the papilla of Vater

1994

The clinical and biochemical presentation of carcinoma of the pancreas (PC) and of the papilla of Vater (CPV) are very similar, and, consequently, detailed investigations are required to correctly distinguish between them. The aim of the present study was to select the clinical and biochemical variables that would most efficiently discriminate the precise site of tumor origin. The study group consisted of 72 patients with PC and 22 patients with CPV consecutively hospitalized in our department. The following clinical parameters were considered: age, asthenia, anorexia, vomiting, weight loss, pain, fever, pruritis, and constipation; the biochemical parameters considered were total, direct, a…

Failure of opioids to affect excitation and contraction in isolated ventricular heart muscle

1989

The opioid agonists morphine (selective for mu-receptors) and ethylketocyclazocine (selective for kappa-receptors), at concentrations evoking strong effects in neuronal structures, did not significantly affect the configuration of the intracellularly recorded action potential and the force of contraction in ventricular heart muscle isolated from guinea pigs, rabbits and man. These results suggest that any changes of heart functions in vivo in response to opioid-like drugs are probably not mediated postsynaptically at the myocardial cell membrane but rather presynaptically, influencing the release of noradrenaline and/or acetylcholine from the nerve terminals.

Pulmonary embolism hotline 2012. Recent and expected trials.

2012

SummaryManagement of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) has advanced considerably in the past year, and progress is expected to continue in 2013. To help determine the optimal management strategy for normotensive patients with intermediate-risk PE, the Pulmonary Embolism Thrombolysis (PEITHO) study completed enrolment of 1006 patients with evidence of right ventricular dysfunction (by echocardiography or computed tomography) plus a positive troponin test. Patients have been randomised to thrombolytic treatment with tenecteplase versus placebo, and the effects on clinical end points (death or haemodynamic collapse) assessed at 7 and 30 days. The results are expected in spring 2013; long-term foll…

Chronic oral haloperidol and clozapine in rats: A behavioral evaluation.

1999

The present study evaluated chronic oral treatment of rats with haloperidol or clozapine. Drugs were given in the drinking water for a 23-day period . Rat behavior was analyzed once a week in an open field. Rats ingested either 1.7 mg/kg haloperidol or 40 mg/kg clozapine daily. Blood serum analysis revealed concentrations of 6 ng/ml for haloperidol and 22 ng/ml for clozapine at the end of the treatment. Haloperidol decreased overall activity from the onset of treatment. Clozapine showed similar effects only on the last test day. Control animals showed a slight habituation in exploration-related parameters. In conclusion, these results indicate that oral drug administration through the drink…

0137 : Takotsubo cardiomyopathy following acute cerebral events

2016

International audience; ObjectiveTakotsubo cardiomyopathy is characterized by a transient apical ventricular dysfunction typically induced by an acute stress. Acute cerebral events including ischemic stroke (IS) or Epileptic Event (EE) may both be associated with massive catecholamine release. We aimed to identify the characteristics and outcomes of patients who experienced Takotsubo syndrome complicating an IS or EE.MethodsBetween 2008 and 2013, 87 patients were admitted in our Intensive Care Unit for suspected Takotsubo syndrome, of whom 6 previously experienced acute cerebral symptoms with either IS or EE, within two days. Takotsubo syndrome was diagnosed on Cardiac Magnetic Resonance, e…

Assessment and management of agitation in psychiatry: Expert consensus

2016

International audience; BACKGROUND:Psychomotor agitation is associated with different psychiatric conditions and represents an important issue in psychiatry. Current recommendations on agitation in psychiatry are not univocal. Actually, an improper assessment and management may result in unnecessary coercive or sedative treatments. A thorough and balanced review plus an expert consensus can guide assessment and treatment decisions.METHODS:An expert task force iteratively developed consensus using the Delphi method. Initial survey items were based on systematic review of the literature. Subsequent surveys included new, re-worded or re-rated items.RESULTS:Out of 2175 papers assessing psychomo…

Emerging therapies for raising high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and augmenting HDL particle functionality.

2014

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles are highly complex polymolecular aggregates capable of performing a remarkable range of atheroprotective functions. Considerable research is being performed throughout the world to develop novel pharmacologic approaches to: (1) promote apoprotein A-I and HDL particle biosynthesis; (2) augment capacity for reverse cholesterol transport so as to reduce risk for the development and progression of atherosclerotic disease; and (3) modulate the functionality of HDL particles in order to increase their capacity to antagonize oxidation, inflammation, thrombosis, endothelial dysfunction, insulin resistance, and other processes that participate in arterial wal…

Increased risk for cervical disease progression of French women infected with the human papillomavirus type 16 E6-350G variant.

2006

Abstract To test the significance of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 and HPV16 E6 variants as risk factors for viral persistence and progression to high-grade lesion, we did a nested case-control study within a cohort study of >15,000 Caucasian French women. Three groups infected with high-risk HPV were compared: (a) women with cleared infection (controls, n = 201), (b) women with persistent infection (cases, n = 87), and (c) women who progressed into high-grade lesion (cases, n = 58). Women with persistent HPV infection and those that progressed into high-grade lesions were likelier to harbor HPV16 than other high-risk HPV types [odds ratio (OR), 2.4; 95% confidence interval (95%…

Public health policies and alcohol-related liver disease

2019

Summary: Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) represents a major public health problem worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, the highest levels of per capita alcohol consumption are observed in countries of the European Region. Alcohol consumption is also alarmingly increasing in developing countries. ALD is one of the main contributors to the burden of alcohol-attributable deaths and disability. In the United States, severe forms of ALD such alcoholic hepatitis have increased in the last decade and in the United Kingdom, three-quarters of liver-related mortality results from alcohol consumption. Besides genetic factors, there is strong evidence that the amount of alcohol co…
