Commenting on daily life of the scientific community, newspapers highlight some characteristics of the way sciences are evolving, thanks to a kind of epistemological flash-back : the way they lean on working hypothesis, these working hypothesis leaning themselves on on-going dogma. These comments on scientific current affairs call for a new understanding of gradual corrections of hypothesis.

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the convergence process between European regions by taking into account spatial patterns of economic activities. First, with the help of literature reviews on theoretical and empirical analyses of growth and convergence and on economic geography models, we show in chapter 1 why geographic disparities should be introduced in the study of convergence between economies. Next, the spatial statistic and econometric tools allowing to reach this goal are detailed in chapter 2. Measurement of the SMC muon beam polarisation using the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off polarised electrons

A muon beam polarimeter was built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for beam energies of 100 and 190 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off the polarised electrons of a ferromagnetic target whose magnetisation is periodically reversed. At muon energies of 100 and 190 GeV the measured polarisation is P-mu = -0.80 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) and P-mu = - 0.797 +/- 0.011 (stat.) +/- 0.012 (syst.), respectively. These results agree with measurements of the beam polarisation using a shape analysis of the decay positron energy spectrum. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Experimental snapshot verification of non-Markovianity by quantum probing of convex coefficients

We apply the recently proposed quantum probing protocols with an unknown system-probe coupling to probe the convex coefficients in mixtures of commuting states. By using two reference states instead of one as originally suggested, we are able to probe both the lower and upper bounds for the convex coefficient. We perform extensive analysis for the roles of the parameters characterizing the double peaked Gaussian frequency spectrum in the Markovian-to-non-Markovian transition of the polarization dynamics of a single photon. As part of a multi-year programme, survey campaigns have been carried out on both slopes of the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass (2188 m, western Alps), at an altitude of between 750 and 3000 m. The method employed abandons ground-based surveying in favour of multiple manual surveys carried out on selected topographic contexts down to the base of the Holocene fill. The results obtained document the longterm development of the pedo-sedimentary dynamic and the occupation of the different altitude stages. Massiivisten galaksien gravitaatio aiheuttaa vääristymän teleskoopilla havaittavaan kuvaan muuttamalla galaksin takaa saapuvan valon reittiä. Niin kutsu- tuissa vahvoissa gravitaatiolinsseissä voi linssinä toimiva galaksi tuottaa kuvaan sen takana olevasta galaksista useita näyttäviä kaaria. Linssinä toimineen galaksin massa ja linssiytyneen galaksin alkuperäinen muoto voidaan tällöin laskennallisesti selvit- tää, ja näin saada tietoa linssigalaksin massan ja teleskoopilla suoraan havaitun valon määrän suhteesta. Marginalisé dans les études symonsiennes, London: A Book of Aspects (1909) se présente comme un récit de voyage doublé d’une réflexion sur la « mêlée des arts ». Le poète de London Nights et de Silhouettes ne vise nullement le réalisme journalistique mais élabore un récit feuilleté où l’art de la danse et de la peinture se mêlent à une réflexion plus large sur l’écriture, l’identité et la mémoire. Une version jamais publiée se doublait de photogravures d’Alvin Langdon Coburn inscrivant en outre la rencontre de l’image et du texte. Cette alchimie poétique produit, sinon de l’or, du moins une vision dorée de la ville mais se conclut sur une note plus sombre lorsque Symons explore l’East End. …
