Possibilities of Dental Age Assessment in Permanent Teeth: A Review

2012

The developmental stages of the first and second dentition, combined with abrasive wear of the dental hard tissue can be used for age determination in many mammal species and in humans. Concerning dental age determination, one has to distinguish between invasive techniques, which are mainly applied in dead individuals, and non-invasive methods suitable for living individuals. In contrast to in adults, where only few parameters are available for orientation, age determination in children and adolescents is in general fairly easy, and is facilitated by stereotypical biological growth patterns. In the present article, different methods for dental age determination are introduced, with a specia…

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2008-02-01 Objectives: The aim of the present study was to analyze the main clinical and histopathological features of autoimmune diseases with oral manifestations such as oral lichen planus (OLP); mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP); pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and erythema multiforme (EM). Study design: Retrospective review of 5770 files from the Oral Pathology Laboratory of São José dos Campos Dental School, São Paulo State University (UNESP) comprising a 27-year period from 1974 to 2000. Results: The cases accounted for 64 (1.10%) of 5770 anatomopathological examinations performed over the study p…

Helicobacter pylori in the dental plaque : is it of diagnostic value for gastric infection?

2006

Aim: The aim of the present study was the assessment of association of helicobacter pylori of dental plaque and stomach in a more homogenous population and also to determine the diagnostic value of dental plaque for gastric infection. Materials and Methods: Based on the results of Rapid urease test (RUT) on specimens from gastric antrum, 88 patients with symptoms of dyspepsia were assigned into two groups of infected and non-infected with helicobacter pylori. Supragingival plaque samples were collected from mandibular first and second molar area using and sterile curette and were investigated using RUT. Statistical analysis of data was performed using chi-square test and independent t-test.…

Oral implant rehabilitation in a patient with Moebius syndrome

2009

Introduction: Moebius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by unilateral or bilateral involvement of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves, resulting in a lack of facial expression and eye movements. These patients suffer a series of oral manifestations that may complicate their dental treatment, such as facial and tongue muscle weakness, uncontrolled salivation secondary to defi cient lip sealing, micrognathia, microstomia, bifi d uvula, gothic and fi ssured palate, fi ssured tongue, and glossoptosis. The underlying etiology remains unclear, though vascular problems during embryogenesis appear to be involved. Clinical case: We report the case of a woman with Moebius syndrome…
