Mycotoxins in maize: mitigation actions, with a chain management approach

Maize is the principal staple food/feed crop exposed to mycotoxins, and the co-occurrence of multiple mycotoxins and their metabolites has been well documented. This review presents the infection cycle, ecology, and plant-pathogen interactions of Aspergillus and Fusarium species in maize, and current knowledge on maize chain management to mitigate the occurrence of aflatoxins and fumonisins. Preventive actions include at pre-harvest, as part of cropping systems, at harvest, and at postharvest, through storage, processing, and detoxification to minimize consumer exposure. Germination and emergence of Neslia paniculata (L.) Desv.

Abstract Seed characteristics, either in size or in structure, can affect germination, hence the emergence of a plant species. In the present work germination and emergence of Neslia paniculata, a Brassicaceae species that produces fruits containing one seed covered by a hard fruit coat, was studied. Germination experiments of seed with and without the fruit coat were performed at constant temperatures from 5 to 23 °C under controlled conditions and germination was measured daily. An updated overview of the marine alien and cryptogenic species from the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area (Italy)

An updated overview of the marine alien and cryptogenic species recorded in the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy), based on relevant publications, grey literature and unpublished data, is presented and discussed. Abstract Post-harvest spoilage fungi in tomatoes represent an economic loss for industry and consumers. There is currently an increasing demand for novel applications of bio-preservatives as replacers of chemical additives and pesticides in food. In vitro colonic fermentation of a plant sterol-enriched beverage in a dynamic-colonic gastrointestinal digester

Abstract The impact of a plant sterol-enriched beverage on the sterol metabolism, organic acid production and microbiota composition was evaluated by means of a dynamic gastrointestinal and colonic fermentation model. After one week of fermentation, an absence of sterol metabolites was reported, in accordance with the lack of microbiota related to their metabolism. We studied the life history, metal-avoidance behavior, spatial distribution, and population growth of enchytraeid worms (Cognettia sphagnetorum [Oligochaeta]) originating from two sites: one uncontaminated, and another patchily polluted by heavy metals. Effects of patchy soil contamination on populations were studied in microcosms. In uncontaminated soil, worms from the polluted site had lower viability and reduced growth rate as juveniles but higher growth rate as adults compared to worms from the unpolluted site.
