A rapid rosetting method for separation of hemocyte sub-populations of Drosophila melanogaster.
2003
Hemocytes, cellular elements of the innate immune system in insects, play a crucial role in the cellular and humoral immune response. Although a significant amount of information has been collected on their differentiation and function, our understanding of hemocyte development is far from complete. Their characterisation is mostly based on morphological criteria. However, molecular markers were recently identified, defining functional subsets by the aid of monoclonal antibodies. Isolated subsets of hemocytes, in sufficient quantity and purity could help to analyse their development in vitro and also to further define their molecular characteristics. Here we describe an antibody-based roset…
Phase-shifting by means of an electronically tunable lens: quantitative phase imaging of biological specimens with digital holographic microscopy
2016
The use of an electronically tunable lens (ETL) to produce controlled phase shifts in interferometric arrangements is shown. The performance of the ETL as a phase-shifting device is experimentally validated in phase-shifting digital holographic microscopy. Quantitative phase maps of a section of the thorax of a Drosophila melanogaster fly and of human red blood cells have been obtained using our proposal. The experimental results validate the possibility of using the ETL as a reliable phase-shifter device.
Accurate single-shot quantitative phase imaging of biological specimens with telecentric digital holographic microscopy
2014
The advantages of using a telecentric imaging system in digital holographic microscopy (DHM) to study biological specimens are highlighted. To this end, the performances of nontelecentric DHM and telecentric DHM are evaluated from the quantitative phase imaging (QPI) point of view. The evaluated stability of the microscope allows single-shot QPI in DHM by using telecentric imaging systems. Quantitative phase maps of a section of the head of the drosophila melanogaster fly and of red blood cells are obtained via single-shot DHM with no numerical postprocessing. With these maps we show that the use of telecentric DHM provides larger field of view for a given magnification and permits more acc…
La planificación basada en competencias en los másteres oficiales: un reto para el profesorado universitario
2010
To focus the attention on competences means a radical change for the teaching design. It is one of the places where the most effective changes are expected. The research presented here tries to analyze the way that competences are used when describing official Master degrees. The competences of 87 Master degrees from 9 universities are analyzed. The results show that most Masters do not specify their competences. The most common ones refer to the knowledge application and that an enormous heterogeneity exists when classifying the types of competences. Desde la planificación docente, centrar la atención en las competencias supone un giro radical. Es uno de los elementos en los que se aspira …
Su Santidad el Papa Pío IX, y la semana santa romana de 1866, visto por un ilustre valenciano
2007
Francisco de Paula Ximénez and Marco made a trip to Italy in 1866. He left a chronicle unpublished. The story of his stay in Rome is published, during the Easter of this year. The chronicle of the celebrations reveals the fascination that exerted Pío IX on the travelling ones and it informs to us on the organization into which it was left of the Pontifical States.
Alcohol boosts pheromone production in male flies and makes them sexier
2020
The attraction of Drosophila melanogaster towards byproducts of alcoholic fermentation, especially ethanol, has been extensively studied 1–4. However, the adaptive value of this behavior has not been elucidated. Previous studies have suggested anthropomorphic interpretations of D. melanogaster behavior towards alcohols 5,6. Here, we instead assert that there exists a simple yet vital biological rationale for alcohol contact and consumption by these insects. We show that exposure to alcohols, especially methanol, results in an immediate amplification of fatty acid ester pheromone levels, which in turn elevates the probability that a male will successfully compete for a female during courtshi…
Caffeate and piperidine-3-ol derivatives from the stem bark of Cassia sieberiana
2019
A new caffeate derivative from the ethanol extract of the stem bark of Cassia sieberiana DC. is described herein along with the known secondary metabolites spectaline (2), iso-6-cassine (3), 3-O-methyl-chiro-inositol (4), monobehenin (5), octyl nonadecyloate (6), β-sitosterol (7), stigmasterol (8) and sitosterol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (9). The chemical structures were elucidated by means of various spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. Extract and isolated compounds were devoid of inhibitory action against the herein selected bacterial strains (MICs > 256 μg/mL) but showed capacities to reduce 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical (EC50 < 3 μg/mL) considerably better than the …

Postmortem Imaging in Mass Disasters
2019
The term “mass casualty” in the forensic field refers to a sudden tragic event involving a large number of people; such an event determines the need to perform a large number of autopsy exams, possibly in a short time. Mass casualties tend to involve emergencies that are unexpected and result in stressful situation when even those with no or scarce interest or experience could be called to play a role. Radiology could be helpful in the task of identifying victims, in cooperation with a multidisciplinary team, usually headed by a forensic specialist.
