PTEN hamartoma tumor syndromes in childhood: description of two cases and a proposal for follow-up protocol
2013
PTEN hamartoma tumor syndromes (PHTS) are a spectrum of hamartomatous overgrowth syndromes associated with germ-line mutations in the tumor suppressor PTEN gene located on 10q23.3. It is widely accepted that two of these disorders, Cowden syndrome and Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome, are allelic conditions. Because PTEN mutations are not identifiable in every case of the PHTS phenotype, the inability to detect a mutation within the PTEN gene does not invalidate the clinical diagnosis of Cowden syndrome, or Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome, in patients who meet diagnostic criteria for these disorders. PTEN mutations are associated with an increased risk for developing breast, thyroid, end…
Making and breaking relationships on social media: the impacts of brand and influencer betrayals
2021
This study considers how the relationships between social media influencers, brands and individuals are intertwined on social media and analyses the spill-over effects of feelings of betrayal. An experimental design with two transgression scenarios (influencer vs. brand) was created, and 250 individuals were recruited to participate in the study. The results show that a perceived betrayal by a brand can negatively affect the perceived coolness of the social media influencer that has endorsed the brand, as well as the parasocial relationships that followers have with the influencer. Accordingly, a perceived betrayal by a social media influencer can negatively affect attitudes, trust and purc…
Insights into the Maya Blue technology: greenish pellets from the ancient city of La Blanca.
2011
Financial support is gratefully acknowledged from the MEC Projects CTQ2011-28079-CO3-01 and 02 which are also supported with ERDF funds. Research was conducted within the "Grupo de anlisis cientifico de bienes culturales y patrimoniales y estudios de ciencia de la conservacion" Microcluster of the University of Valencia Excellence Campus. The authors would like to thank Dr. Isabel Solana (SCSIE, UV), Dr. Jose Luis Moya Lopez, and Manuel Planes Insausti (Microscopy Service UPV) for their technical support.
From Maya Blue to “Maya Yellow”: A Connection between Ancient Nanostructured Materials from the Voltammetry of Microparticles
2011
The yellow hue of a series of samples from wall paintings in several Mayan archaeological sites can be attributed to the presence of indigoid compounds, including isatin and dehydroindigo, attached to palygorskite, a local phyllosilicate clay. SEM/EDX, TEM, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and voltammetry of microparticles show that the ancient Mayas could prepare indigo, Maya Blue, and "Maya Yellow" during successive stages. Three intercontinental disjunctions in Papaveraceae subfamily Chelidonioideae: evidence from chloroplast DNA
1995
An RFLP analysis of the chloroplast genome of Papaveraceae subfam. Chelidonioideae resulted in one most parsimonious tree consisting of three monophyletic groups. Each group contains intercontinental disjunct taxa. Whereas Eomecon/Sanguinaria and Stylophorum are examples for the well known E Asian — eastern N American disjunction, the E Asian -C and S American disjunction in Macleaya/Bocconia is rare. The genus Stylophorum in this analysis is paraphyletic. The N American Stylophorum diphyllum is sister group to the Old World members of Stylophorum and Chelidonium. All American representatives of the subfamily possess distinctive morphological features. This might be the result of Tertiary a…
Measurement of the absolute branching fractions for purely leptonic D+s decays
2021
We report new measurements of the branching fraction $\cal B(D_s^+\to \ell^+\nu)$, where $\ell^+$ is either $\mu^+$ or $\tau^+(\to\pi^+\bar{\nu}_\tau)$, based on $6.32$ fb$^{-1}$ of electron-positron annihilation data collected by the BESIII experiment at six center-of-mass energy points between $4.178$ and $4.226$ GeV. Simultaneously floating the $D_s^+\to\mu^+\nu_\mu$ and $D_s^+\to\tau^+\nu_\tau$ components yields $\cal B(D_s^+\to \tau^+\nu_\tau) = (5.21\pm0.25\pm0.17)\times10^{-2}$, $\cal B(D_s^+\to \mu^+\nu_\mu) = (5.35\pm0.13\pm0.16)\times10^{-3}$, and the ratio of decay widths $R=\frac{\Gamma(D_s^+\to \tau^+\nu_\tau)}{\Gamma(D_s^+\to \mu^+\nu_\mu)} = 9.73^{+0.61}_{-0.58}\pm 0.36$, whe…
Global effective-field-theory analysis of new-physics effects in (semi)leptonic kaon decays
2016
We analyze the decays $K\to\pi\ell\nu$ and $P\to\ell\nu$ ($P=K,\pi$, $\ell=e,\,\mu$) using a low-energy Effective-Field-Theory approach to parametrize New Physics and study the complementarity with baryon $\beta$ decays. We then provide a road map for a global analysis of the experimental data, with all the Wilson coefficients simultaneously, and perform a fit leading to numerical bounds for them and for $V_{us}$. A prominent result of our analysis is a reinterpretation of the well-known $V_{ud}-V_{us}$ diagram as a strong constraint on new physics. Finally, we reinterpret our bounds in terms of the $SU(2)_L\times~U(1)_Y$-invariant operators, provide bounds to the corresponding Wilson coeff…

Chemical Composition, Antioxidant Properties and Antimicrobial Activity of the Essential Oil of Murraya Paniculata Leaves from the Mountains of Centr…
2012
The essential oil of Murraya paniculata L leaves from the mountains of the Central Region of Cuba, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Eighteen compounds, accounting for 95.1% of the oil were identified. The major component was β-caryophyllene (ca. 30%). The antioxidant activity of essential oil was evaluated against Cucurbita seed oil by peroxide, thiobarbituric acid and p-anisidine methods. The essential oil showed stronger antioxidant activity than that of butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene, but lower than that of propyl gallate. Moreover, this antioxidant activity was supported by the complementary antioxidant assay in…
The Individual and the Community in Stoic Pragmatism
2023
The present paper outlines John Lachs’s idea of stoic pragmatism and develops its important part that is the relation between the individual and the community. In his project, Lachs reduces the whole tradition of Stoic philosophy to its later, Roman version and tries to link it with the philosophical tradition of American pragmatism (especially William James, John Dewey, and George Santayana, who is close to pragmatism at some points) hoping that it is possible for these two to "enrich and complete each other" so that to provide "a better attitude to life than either of the two views alone." Stoic pragmatism pursues factual improvement in the quality of life for individuals living in given …
