Selective Change-Driven Image Processing: A Speeding-Up Strategy

2009

Biologically inspired schemes are a source for the improvement of visual systems. Real-time implementation of image processing algorithms is constrained by the large amount of data to be processed. Full image processing is many times unnecessary since there are many pixels that suffer a small change or not suffer any change at all. A strategy based on delivering and processing pixels, instead of processing the complete frame, is presented. The pixels that have suffered higher changes in each frame, ordered by the absolute value of its change, are read-out and processed. Two examples are shown: a morphological motion detection algorithm and the Horn and Schunck optical flow algorithm. Result…

Absolutely continuous functions in Rn

2005

Abstract For each 0 α 1 we consider a natural n-dimensional extension of the classical notion of absolute continuous function. We compare it with the Malý's and Hencl's definitions. It follows that each α-absolute continuous function is continuous, weak differentiable with gradient in L n , differentiable almost everywhere and satisfies the formula on change of variables.

A Failed Constitutional Experiment: The Monarchical Constitutionalism and the Organic Regulations of 1831-1832

2020

In this paper I intend to give a brief account of the context, causes, structure, aims and dynamic of what I decided to label the Romanian ‘monarchical constitutionalism without octroy’, as a subspecies of the monarchical constitutionalism. After a short account of the geopolitical, political, legal and social contexts specific to the Romanian Principalities at 1830, I shall address the provisions of the ORs against the accepted standards of the monarchical constitutionalism and follow their subsequent developments in the Romanian constitutional and political praxis. My core idea is that the Russians have borrowed from France and imposed the specific constitutional mechanisms of limited mon…

Correlation of the Extent of Fjord-Region Oxidation with DNA Binding and Mutagenicity of the Enantiomeric 11,12-Dihydrodiols of Dibenzo[a,l]pyrene

1996

Abstract In vitro studies on the hepatic biotransformation of the enantiomeric trans-11,12-dihydrodiols of dibenzo[a,l]pyrene (DB[a,l]P) using microsomal fractions of animals pretreated with Aroclor 1254 revealed that the formation of fjord-region dihydrodiol epoxides strongly depends on the absolute configuration of the substrate. Both the (-)-11R,12R- and the (+)-11S,12S-enantiomer are converted diastereoselectively to the (-)- and (+)-anti-dihydrodiol epoxide, respectively, by either rat or mouse liver microsomes. Fjord-region oxidation occurs to greatest extent on incubation of the (-)-11R,12R-dihydrodiol with preparations from rats. This finding is in line with the differences seen for…

Using self-controlled case series to understand the relationship between conflict and cholera in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo

2021

Abstract Background Cholera outbreaks contribute significantly to diarrhoeal disease mortality, especially in low-income countries. Cholera outbreaks have several social and environmental risk factors and extreme conditions can act as catalysts for outbreaks. A social extreme with known links to infectious disease outbreaks is conflict, causing disruption to services, loss of income and displacement. Methods Here, we explored this relationship in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), by fitting publicly available cholera and conflict data to conditional logistic regression models. We used the self-controlled case series method in a novel application, to understand if an exposu…

Singular quasisymmetric mappings in dimensions two and greater

2018

For all $n \geq 2$, we construct a metric space $(X,d)$ and a quasisymmetric mapping $f\colon [0,1]^n \rightarrow X$ with the property that $f^{-1}$ is not absolutely continuous with respect to the Hausdorff $n$-measure on $X$. That is, there exists a Borel set $E \subset [0,1]^n$ with Lebesgue measure $|E|>0$ such that $f(E)$ has Hausdorff $n$-measure zero. The construction may be carried out so that $X$ has finite Hausdorff $n$-measure and $|E|$ is arbitrarily close to 1, or so that $|E| = 1$. This gives a negative answer to a question of Heinonen and Semmes.

Lung cancer survival in Germany: A population-based analysis of 132,612 lung cancer patients.

2014

Lung cancer is the most common cancer-related death worldwide. In Germany it accounts for 25% of cancer deaths in men, and 14% in women. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of 5-year relative survival by sex, age, histology, and tumour stage in Germany representing a population of 26.7 million people. The study is based on a pooled German dataset including data from 12 population-based cancer registries covering around one third of the German population. A total of 132,612 patients diagnosed with lung cancer from 2002 to 2010 were included in the analysis. Survival estimates for the time period 2007-2010 were calculated using period analysis. Differences in survival between sexes…

Irreducible characters of $3'$-degree of finite symmetric, general linear and unitary groups

2018

Abstract Let G be a finite symmetric, general linear, or general unitary group defined over a field of characteristic coprime to 3. We construct a canonical correspondence between irreducible characters of degree coprime to 3 of G and those of N G ( P ) , where P is a Sylow 3-subgroup of G . Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that fields of values of character correspondents are the same.

Envelopes of open sets and extending holomorphic functions on dual Banach spaces

2010

We investigate certain envelopes of open sets in dual Banach spaces which are related to extending holomorphic functions. We give a variety of examples of absolutely convex sets showing that the extension is in many cases not possible. We also establish connections to the study of iterated weak* sequential closures of convex sets in the dual of separable spaces.

Algebraische Approximationen hoher Ordnung an die Exponentialfunktion

1992
