Muscular Activity of the Posterior Deltoid During Swimming vs. Resistance Exercises on Water and Dry Land

The purpose of this study was to compare muscular activity of the posterior deltoid muscle during three typical aquatic physical conditioning activities. This interpretative case study involved a 23-year-old elite swimmer and athlete. Muscular activity was measured with surface electromyography during swimming crawl at maximum speed, and also while performing horizontal shoulder abduction using elastic band and Hydro-Tone Bells resistance. Broadband Dielectric Investigation of Sodium Potassium Niobate Ceramic Doped 8% of Antimony

In this work we present dielectric permittivity measurement results of KNN ceramic doped antimony (K0.5Na0.5)(Nb0.92Sb0.08)O3 with sintering aid MnO2 (0.5 mol% MnO2) (KNNSbx + 0.5Mn). Its dielectric properties were investigated in broad frequency (from 20 Hz to 32 GHz) and temperature (from 26 K to 780K) ranges. Above room temperature obtained results show two diffused phase transitions. Below room temperature investigation revealed dielectric permittivity dispersion similar to the relaxor one. The obtained mean relaxation times fulfills Arrhenius relationship with dipole activation energy Ea/kB = 2282 K.

Steam catalytic cracking of naphtha in smaller FCC units can be considered an option to produce more ethene and propene. These units will operate at high reaction temperatures and in the presence of steam. Calpains mediate epithelial-cell death during mammary gland involution: mitochondria and lysosomal destabilization.

Our aim was to elucidate the physiological role of calpains (CAPN) in mammary gland involution. Both CAPN-1 and -2 were induced after weaning and its activity increased in isolated mitochondria and lysosomes. CAPN activation within the mitochondria could trigger the release of cytochrome c and other pro-apoptotic factors, whereas in lysosomes it might be essential for tissue remodeling by releasing cathepsins into the cytosol. Activation of the nuclear transcription factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) has been implicated in liver tumorigenesis. We evaluated the effects of a novel NF-kappa B inhibitor, dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin (DHMEQ), in two human liver cancer cell lines HA22T/VGH and HuH-6. DHMEQ treatment dose dependently decreased the DNA-binding capacity of the NF-kappa B p65 subunit, inhibited cell growth and proliferation, and increased apoptosis as shown by caspase activation, release of cytochrome c, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage, and down-regulation of survivin. Cytocidal effects of Escherichia coli hemolysin on human T lymphocytes.

Escherichia coli hemolysin is the prototype of a large family of pore-forming toxins produced by gram-negative organisms. Besides its known cytotoxic activities against granulocytes, monocytes, endothelial cells, and renal epithelial cells, we now demonstrate that the toxin potently kills human T lymphocytes. Evidence based on different and independent approaches indicates that lymphocidal activity is due to formation of transmembrane pores. Additionally, cells prestimulated with phytohemagglutinin respond to low doses of E. coli hemolysin with DNA fragmentation similar to that observed in cells undergoing programmed cell death. GD3 ganglioside directly targets mitochondria in a bcl-2-controlled fashion.

Lipid and glycolipid diffusible mediators are involved in the intracellular progression and amplification of apoptotic signals. GD3 ganglioside is rapidly synthesized from accumulated ceramide after the clustering of death-inducing receptors and triggers apoptosis. Here we show that GD3 induces dissipation of DeltaPsim and swelling of isolated mitochondria, which results in the mitochondrial release of cytochrome c, apoptosis inducing factor, and caspase 9. Soluble factors released from GD3-treated mitochondria are sufficient to trigger DNA fragmentation in isolated nuclei.
