Conditions in Home and Transplant Soils Have Differential Effects on the Performance of Diploid and Allotetraploid Anthericum Species
2015
Due to increased levels of heterozygosity, polyploids are expected to have a greater ability to adapt to different environments than their diploid ancestors. While this theoretical pattern has been suggested repeatedly, studies comparing adaptability to changing conditions in diploids and polyploids are rare. The aim of the study was to determine the importance of environmental conditions of origin as well as target conditions on performance of two Anthericum species, allotetraploid A. liliago and diploid A. ramosum and to explore whether the two species differ in the ability to adapt to these environmental conditions. Specifically, we performed a common garden experiment using soil from 6 …
Use of phenoclimatic models to estimate the chill and heat requirements of four sweet cherry cultivars in Italy
2017
During their dormant period, fruit trees require a certain amount of relatively low temperatures to complete bud differentiation processes and regularly resume growth the following spring. Unsatisfied chilling needs can result in delayed foliation, severe yield and fruit quality losses. There is a need for a method to estimate accurately the chilling requirement of a cultivar. This is especially important in those areas where the potential of chill accumulation in winter is low and for those crops, such as sweet cherry, which generally have a high chilling requirement. Historical temperature records and blooming dates of four sweet cherry cultivars widely cultivated in Italy - 'Burlat', 'Sw…
Biologically Inspired Hardware: Status and Perspectives (Invited Talk)
2012
Biologically Inspired Computing places its emphasis on robustness, adaptability, and emergent organization considering the interaction of many processes. Bio-inspired algorithms exhibit strength and flexibility in poorly defined or time-variable tasks, as well as when the global behaviour is achieved by simple interacting of species or agents. The above philosophy links various disciplines such as artificial and computationally intelligence, evolutionary computation, bio-robotics, agent-based systems, and Digital Ecosystems. In this paper, the main branches of bio-inspired computing are briefly discussed. Successively, the impact of the bioinspired paradigm on innovative hardware structures…
Career Adaptability and re-employability after long periods of inactivity
2017
There has recently been an increasing interest in stimulating re-employment of unemployed workers by so-called active labor market policies. In Italy, the Fiat factory in Termini Imerese (Sicily) is one of the most important business cases in the study of the relationship between economic and psycho-social needs of an entire area in relation to the theme of the work importance. This paper is the result of an agreement signed between our University Department, the company interested to reintegrate ex-FIAT workers (BLUTEC), and the consulting firm who have in charge with this delicate transition process. We want to explore the psychosocial variables related to the long period of inactivity, s…
Low-cost solutions for manipulation tasks in manufacturing systems: balancing costs and performances
2010
Abstract Industrial robots are distinguished from other types of machinery mainly on the basis of their programmability and adaptability to different tasks. However, the cost s of the state of the art solutions for every system within their structure became very high compared with some applications. This work presents two proposed solutions of so called robotic manipulators, which may fulfil some of the manipulating tasks specific to industrial robots while using low-cost solutions of transmission, actuation and automation systems.
Autonomic behaviors in an Ambient Intelligence system
2014
Ambient Intelligence (AmI) systems are constantly evolving and becoming ever more complex, so it is increasingly difficult to design and develop them successfully. Moreover, because of the complexity of an AmI system as a whole, it is not always easy for developers to predict its behavior in the event of unforeseen circumstances. A possible solution to this problem might lie in delegating certain decisions to the machines themselves, making them more autonomous and able to self-configure and self-manage, in line with the paradigm of Autonomic Computing. In this regard, many researchers have emphasized the importance of adaptability in building agents that are suitable to operate in real-wor…
A Rule-Based System for Hardware Configuration and Programming of IoT Devices
2019
Simplifying programming, deployment, and configuration of heterogeneous networked IoT devices requires networking, hardware, representation of knowledge and concepts, design and programming skills. In fact, IoT applications are mostly built by adopting different existing paradigms and technologies on a case-by-case basis. As a result, programming tools hinder adaptability and interoperability of applications with their rigidity. In this paper, we propose a rule-based system that configures and programs IoT devices automatically. The rule base holds formal specifications about hardware platforms, networking protocols, physical world concepts, and applications. Provided with a high-level appl…
Food supplementation reveals constraints and adaptability of egg quality in the magpie Pica pica
2015
Differences in the deposition of limited maternal resources to eggs can reflect the optimal allocation to manipulate offspring phenotype, or constraints caused by maternal condition. We examined multiple maternal substances transferred to eggs in the magpie Pica pica to test the hypothesis that certain substances represent constraint and some optimal allocation. We did this by supplementary feeding magpies prior to egg-laying and then comparing the effect of food on maternal substances in conjunction with laying order relative to a control group. Certain substances such as carotenoids, immunoglobulins and avidin responded positively to food supplementation, whereas others, such as testoste…
A Mobile Computing Framework for Pervasive Adaptive Platforms
2012
International audience; Ubiquitous computing is now the new computing trend, such systems that interact with their environment require self-adaptability. Bioinspiration is a natural candidate to provide the capability to handle complex and changing scenarios. This paper presents a programming framework dedicated to pervasive platforms programming. This bioinspired and agentoriented framework has been developed within the frame of the PERPLEXUS European project that is intended to provide support for bioinspiration-driven system adaptability. This framework enables the platform to adapt itself to application requirements at high-level while using hardware acceleration at node level. The resu…
A learning model for the dual evolution of human social behaviors
2003
In this work we modelize, with an abstract mathematical model by computer simulation, the processes that have made to appear in the world a strong duality between orient and occident, by combining changes in conditions of initialization, natural system and the opposition gregarious/individualism of the social behaviors. Finally we present a statistical study of the influence of the repression adaptability, resignation and recycling on the ecological destruction and social evolution. This model can help us to analyze if the current capitalist globalization can be stopped, changed or regulated, and if it is possible to overcome it towards a Free Scientific Society.
